OK, I give up... I'm trying to enter the building by raising the column-like elevator. I get it to stop at the platform (midway up) by entering "9" on the "weight regulators" (10 if the tablet is on the pedestal). My own weight is shown as "6" rings. However, adding 6 (totalling 15 or 16) doesn't help... I link to the column but it always starts to descend... this seems illogical. I'm tired of this; can anyone help?

It's always meant to start to descend. You want to get it to descend from the very top and stop when it gets to the middle.

You figured out how much you weigh, how much the slate weighs and how much the pillar itself weighs. Recheck your math---is the total weight 15 or 16? Then double-check that you're setting the hydraulic valves so that the upward force sums to the correct number. You've got the correct answer; perhaps you're tripping up on some minor detail in execution.

If you don't know how much you weigh, there is a scale to the left of the controls where you can check your weight.
