I'm kinda 'blah' about it...to me it parallels 'Sign' by M. Night Shayamalan. I'm looking forward to "Land of the Dead"

Hate it.
HateithateithateitHATEIThateit.
Once again, an imaginative and creative literary classic has been efficiently and ruthlessly taken by the Hollywood machine and had a swift plot-ectomy and a pretty face stuck on the front.
Oh, and the original was set a few miles from my house, so yes there's some bitterness there.

Ah€¦Well Spielberg used to be someone I looked up to. Very nice guy and a genius with movies. That until he started consorting with Castro and telling us that America is evil. I likely would have seriously considered what he had to say until he started becoming chubby with dictators. The dude needs to stick to making movies and keep his mouth shut. To think I actually used to like him.
That said€¦his movies are still the best so I am really looking forward to this one.
Bit- There will never be a movie that is as good as a book. I consider a movie...if done very well to be a little bit of imagination added. Also...its cool sometimes to realize that people (when they imagine people, places and things in a book) dont always see them the same way you imagined.

But it's not cool when Wells' vision and his points on the Spirit Of Man (TM) are shunted aside to make way for another simple The Day After Tomorrow-alike.
Besides which, one of the book's greatest strengths was its visionary qualities. The almost quaint and innocent way that the inhabitants of rural post-Victorian England examine the first glowing cylinder, with little concept of malevolence, until they get zapped by the ray. This won't happen here becuase the alien story isn't exciting and new like it was then. If this film was more in the vein of 28 Days Later, with the events framing a personal struggle, then I could get excited, but it just seems like another Independence D-eep Impact-ogeddon affair.

No moive will ever be as good as a book. you take what you get. You either like it or your dont.
So you dont. Though one might interject that even better then the book was the radio screen play he did that had small town America freaking out for several hours. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh, now I'm supposed to let people do whatever they want to literature just because it's a movie? No Sir, I shall not do it. Was Lord Of The Rings stripped of its characterisation, turned into a forumlaic disaster movie? In the main, no. Did Trainspotting lose its edge, its point and message? On the contrary, it sucessfully conveyed it to a much wider audience. Don't let movies off lightly - their added visual appeal ought to give them an edge over books, if anything.

ORSON FREAKING WELLES. IN A RADIO PLAY THAT SHARED NOTHING EXCEPT THE TITLE.
Additionally, if you want to judge the merits of things purely on their impact, hooray for Hiroshima.

Bit, nothing that a movie can do can have higher visual impact than my imagination.
Otherwise, yes, an author's creative property should be respected in a translation to another medium, but the last thing people on the internet needs is another reason to create drama.

Not so. It shared the premise.
And I have to disagree with you about Lord of the Rings. While they did an outstanding job given time constraints ect€¦.it was nothing and I do mean NOTHING compared to the books.
Now it may be that you know a good bit more about the War of the Worlds story line, and I suspect this is the case. The movie by itself looks cool even if it doesn€t follow the book closely€¦it could very well turn out differently.

Lol, wolf. Actually he's a human civilian (to answer magiz's question he's an extra) But he was there the day they had the fewest extras so his chances of showing up are good. Plus he tells us all something happpens to him in the movie, but he can't say yet what it is. I can't wait to see the horrible manner in which he dies...

Whenever someone talks about Tom Cruise they indicate he€s probably more into guys then women. Most Hollywood marriages are apparently much like marriages in the day of kings in queens. They are arranged for publicity and what will ultimately bring more notoriety to the individuals. They DO seem to be talking about Tom a good bit more in the news now don€t they. What great coverage for someone who has a new movie coming out.

The War of the Worlds movie is just another sign to me that the movie industry is running out of creative and new ideas, much like many other industries (music, video games, etc.). I mean so far this year we have another Star Wars movie, another Batman movie, a Herby the Lovebug remake, a War of the Worlds remake, a Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy adaptation, Constatine which is a comic adaptation, and I know there more examples which I'm leaving out atm, but I think you get my point......

Might I mention though that this is a NEW herby the love bug movie, and it's about ****ed time I tell you...
Anyhow it's clear to anyone with half a brain that this whole tom-cruise, katie holmes thing is a publicity stunt. He just happens to have war of the worlds coming out and she just happens to be starring in the new batman. It's too conveinent to be happen stance. There's no need to mock alpha wolf. For actors they sure are ****ty at pretending to be in love...
"Something wonderful has happened" blah blah blah. Please get off my television already before I throttle you. Ben and jen, britaany and ashton, now this ****. You could set your watch by the regular rotation of it, the sad thing is there are some people who adore celebrities. Because of these people my news cast has a celebrity gossip column... Well maybe its just me, but its hard to be entertained when you're seeing the same story reprocessed/remade/copied for the ummteenth time. I don't think I'm setting my standards too high, but for $8.50 per ticket and $5+ for snacks/drinks at a theater for a new movie, and $49.99 for new games (possibly $59-$69.99 for next-gen games) I'd like to be watching/playing something that's actually new. Not something thats just been repackaged in a shiney new box with prettier pictures. Why are we being charged the full price of a new game/movie, when we're really only getting something thats been recycled and rehashed?
I give mucho kudos to the creators/publishers of K.D. for making, and taking a chance on, a creative and unique game, and not making another GTA or Quake clone.
Btw, tack on the new Willy Wonka movie to the list...sure I will probably end up seeing it eventually on DVD or something, but is it really worth the price of admission? Where has the creativity gone?

I suggest everyone write their own "original" story.
It's a lot harder than it seems... but hey, if you want to hate something because it's similar to something else, that's fine with me. I'll continue to enjoy movies.
Even BAD ones.

A tad perhaps. I'm sure he's only joking though. And if he's not then may god help us all. I mean arguing in favor of bad movies??? I could understand watching a movie so bad as to find it laughable but the logic in defending say: "Gargoyle: Wing of Darkness" or "Femmalien 3" eludes me. In essence he seems to say "I like ****, keep shoveling while I open my mouth wider!" Which I just can't understand...
I know he's probably only concerned with "did I have a good time" when he comes out of the theatre. My concerns go beyond that and also effect how good a time I have.

I don't have hateful feelings towards any of the movies or games that I mentioned or implied; hate's a strong word which shouldn't be thrown around lightly. I'm just stating my discontent with the current state of affairs in movies and games, and media in general. I liked Star Wars Ep. 3 and Batman Begins looks pretty decent which I'm thinking about seeing. I'm just saddened when all I hear about are sequels and remakes coming out instead of original and creative games and movies....
As for an original story, I do have an original game idea in mind (I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you), and someday I do hope to create it. I'm hoping to have a career in the videogame industry, I'm in my last couple of years of college, 1 year away from my first Bachelor's Degree, and if I can end up telling people that "I make games for a living", I'll die a happy man.
I just like to see people pushing the envelope and exploring unchartered territory with new and exciting ideas, not mainstream horse**** and mindless ripoffs.

I win.
As far as "true originality" goes, it pretty much doesn't exist anymore. Media is based on the past, influenced by the past and will continue to be affected by the past. Everything you create will be influenced by everything you've come in contact with before that point.
And, remember folks... sometimes originality sucks.

I went to see this movie tonight. All I can say is wow. While some may dislike the fact it is biased on a book and can never live up to it€¦..if we set that aside and look at the movie itself it was stunning.
I can€t remember the last time I was scared at a movie. I watch horror films and they put me to sleep€¦.they are either completely unbelievable or try to €œscare€ you with gore. This movie was actually scary in a couple places. I think this may Spielberg€s best work of this type ever.
The other thing I would like to comment on is how well he portrayed human nature and what we become when our only option is to do nothing then just survive. What it takes to survive when everyone wants what you have or whatever is in the area that could potentially ensure their continued survival for nothing more then the next couple of minutes.
I highly recommend this movie. Its not a happy one though.

No, I'm paying to see movies, then find out they are cr@p while watching them. Then, instead of being a depressed defeatist, I choose to find things that I liked about the movie (if any).

I saw fanatstic four and WotW Back to back. Both good movies. Worth payin to see.
OooOOook.... now. I went to go see Fantastic 4 and The War of the worlds back to back cuz apparently I was bored and I had nuthin better to do sunday.. yeah its summer.. so. Here are my reviews on the movies...
Fantastic Four
- Based on the Marvel comic series, the movie had the story on how the four ppl got together and got their powers... well it was a pretty good movie even if you dont excactly know who the fantastic four were. But I'd probably have to say if your a crazy **** that didnt like spiderman.. you wouldnt like this movie.
The War of the Worlds
- Let me just say.. Wtf is Steven Speilburg smokin???... and dont get me wrong. ITs a kikass movie that I is definitely worth spendin money on to watch it on the big screen..
But really.. ppl say... the beginning and the end of the movie (or any performance) are what people remember. and you know what. The beggining and end of the movie suck ***. But the middle kiks ***.
Alright. So the movie starts out with Tom Cruise [yayy] who is working out in a shipyard [wait.. wtf] and he goes home and has to babysit his kids who live with his ex. blablabla... thunder storm... blablabla... all electric devices fried.....blablabla....aliens machines pop out from the ground and the running begins...
***Insert. If youve seen the movie or are going to. why the hell does the guy's video camera work if everything is fried???***
k.... so. Tom cruise gets the only working car. and he gets the hell outta there with the two kids.
Im not gonna go into details but the middle of the movie is Tha ****. and thats why you should go see it. (the only thing i will say is after what happens im surprised those kids arent really ****ed up...)

Spoiler For end of the movie! If your going to go see it dont read this. Ok?

K... Well.. you get to know the end of the moviee. Well... apparently some alien ships were acting wierd and one just fell over and died.... Then Tom Cruise was like look! theres no shields!!! (cuz some birds landed on the ship...now why birds would drop onto a moving metal 30 story alien ship, blowing this loud as hell horn thing i do not know..) So since the shields dropped for some reason on the alien ship...the army guys blast the hell out of it and it died....
Then Tom Cruise walks to his ex's house (untouched.. wtf) and he gives the lil girl to her and apparently the son lived from a large explosion from earlier in the movie AnD made it back to Boston... (wtf...) K.. well by now your like.. What the god**** **** is going on. We were just being invaded. then everything died!
So Steven Speliburg. The genius that he is. *sarcasm* has this voice say... (this is abbreviated to what I can remmeber but here..) " The aliens after eaing our food and drinking our water...(nuthing to do with anything) were killed by the smallest organisms on earth...(the camera zooms until it gets to a small thingy.) and then it ends.
Yeah... Wtf... ur sittin there like.. wtf...
and.. we were sittin there like.. the smallest organism... like... bacteria?.. but no.. the smallest organism according to scientists is a nanobe which have been found in rock filaments (whatever those are) below the australian seabed... yeah idk but it doesnt sound like they are dangerous unless ALL the aliens touched some autralian rocks...
But hey.. maybe Steven Speilburg doesnt read the newspaper because it is a fairly recent fact. But the next smallest organism is a microbe (category which bacteria is under) so he could have at least said killed by the 2nd smallest organisms...
Also ppl who have read the old story say Speilburg ****ed it up... Go make another Jaws movie...
