I didn't wan't to hijack doug.d's thread any longer, but just to say my Thai lady phoned me at 3pm GMT today to tell me she has been released. This is after nearly two months out of contact. She has lost weight but is otherwise ok, my American buddy tells me.

I am so happy I can't tell you http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif . She described the conditions in there and if anyone has seen the movie 'Midnight Express' just picture that.

I haven't asked her too many questions yet. She is very tired and cried most of the time during our conversation. Questions can wait.

She is staying with our mutual friends David (USA) and Lisa (Thai) for a few days before going home. I wish to God I could get out there now but I can't.

Anyway, good news for once. Thanks for the messages of support from forum members. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

HW3, I think your prayers did the trick. Thank you for your kindness. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif You have what the Thai's would call ??????? (good heart).

Regards,

KH and Mai

Great news ! Maybe she said something bad about the royal family and somebody who dislikes her told it to the police.

I heard that in Thailand this can be enough to "breathe some filtered air" for a while. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Why was she in at all?

My understanding is that back in December she was stopped by police at a checkpoint. She was driving a small motorcycle but doesn't have a valid driving licence. She also got done for no insurance (had insurance but it doesn't work without a licence) and no ID card (lost).

She was sentenced to 120 days but had the sense to plead guilty so the tariff was reduced to 60 days. The Thais have a very casual attitude towards the laws of the road. Their motto is "mai pen rai" (Whatever will happen will happen, fate).

I've been on at her for years about getting a licence but it's like talking to a brick wall. Maybe now she'll wake up and get one.
