S-41 patrolling near the Celebes Sea. Sighted ship, identified as small old split freighter, maneuvered into path to attack. Sat at periscope depth with the scope down and waited until the ship had "crossed our T", rose the scope, fired one Mk. 10 torpedo into the vessel.
Torpedo hit, as she started to go down I noticed something I hadn't noticed before. She was flying the flag of the Australian Merchant Marine. I watched in horror as she sank.
My god...what have I done.

Immediately send the following radio message:
"S-41 following Japanese submarine in the vicinity of recent Australian sinking: ....will attempt to engage unless advised otherwise."

Don't feel bad. I got so used to "red" being the color of the enemy, that when I switched to the U boat missions for some stupid reason I thought blue was my enemy (Dorkzilla here!). I sank a carrier (Jap). Thought I did a super job till I got back to port and got spanked by "Frau Focker"

On my last patrol I was near the Solomon islands and there was a message that a large IJN taskforce with trooptransports was heading to the islands. I was near and found them....It was night, but i found them, lined up and let the destroyers pass me and when I had my mouse cursor over the fire button and my index finger in the air already dropping on the mouse botton to fire .....I suddenly saw US flag....I quickly moved my mouse to starboard when my finger hit the button. that was really close. That was really a split second. lol. besides theat it was a remarkable patrol http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif

I wonder how many of us at one time or another got so involved with getting into position, setting a firing position that they failed to notice the flag until after the fish is on their way.
I throw myself at the mercy of the court. The crew spike my coffee with torpedo juice.

I was by the Sea Okhotsk and got a contact report. It was night time. I saw the ship. I don't remember what kind it was, but I decided to attack on the surface. I started shelling it. I then began wondering why it wasn't firing at me or zig-zagging. I try to get closer so I can see the flag. I look at the flag in horror - it was Russian! I order a cease fire and head away from the ship at flank speed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Just about did in an Australian coaster SE of Midway. Got to 1000yds ready to fire stern tubes and couldn't make out the flag. Being a few hundred from Midway I thuoght it was friendy, but couldn't tell. Let it go and ckecked it out from external camera.

Yep, it was really Russian! That's why I went away at flank speed - I didn't want to start WWIII while still fighting WWII! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
A black sub in the dead of night during rough weather could easily be mistaken for a Japanese sub, right? Right? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
