Anyone else who lives in Ontario get belted by that thing? 30+cm of snow. Brutal! I got the day off school though.
It was the first issued blizzard since March of 93! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
Supposedly it was accompanied by a thunderstorm but I can't say for sure. I was sinking while out for a walk. Started in Texas then came up here.
Any of you guys have a good snowstorm story?

We got a couple of inches overnite and today,40 miles south of North Bay, ON
Went out around noon and the highway was as usual well polished. Up here they don't plow the snow, they just polish the raod. The snow will be all gone by Labour Day. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

We got almost 20" of snow here in Chicago, and some places registered over 70 mph wind gusts. I've been shoveling and using a snow blower all day here at work. I still remember the snow storm back in 1967 when we got over 24" of snow.
Is winter over yet?? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

We got about a foot here. Finally stopped about 1 hour ago. I went sledding for the first time in about 5 years. Still I had to push 3 cars out that were stuck (Big surprise) I also helped my dad with the snow.

There was lightning and thunder indeed! Foe was too tired to notice, but his family was woken up by it. There were two lightning strikes on the CN tower as well.
And come on, shoveling it wasn't too bad http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Only took me 40 minutes http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

You were just outside the blizzard area Foe! Started at midnight and kept going. My dad was out there while I was sledding. After that we went out again after dinner and blew snow. That stuff is deep and its like walking through syrup! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

My wife found a NASA/NOAA satellite photo of this storm. Except for southern California, the extreme souther part of the Southwest, and southern Florida, everything is under snow, ice, and/or clouds. It's a true mega-storm.
Welcome La Nina and plummeting temperatures. The smart money was shorting Global Warming futures last summer.

swamprat69er to post one of your pictures you have to copy the IMG code. [IMG
Since I see you have photobucket, when you put your mouse over the picture, the box that comes up with the links to copy, copy the last one. You will see where it says IMG code. Thats the one to paste here.
I had trouble with that at first to.

Well, for once, we got the lesser end of a storm, here in my parts. Snowfall amounts were negligible but, it was the sleet this time that was cause for concern. So far, we've broken snowfall records for December and January but not for the winter as a whole. Since the last week in December, we've had over 55 inches of snow. Not bad for being only half way through the season. The biggest challenge now is where to put the snow if we're hit with another storm. The streets are barely wide enough for parked vehicles and in some cases, not legally wide enough to fit emergency vehicles through (15 foot clearance). Cars are generally parked between 2 to 3 feet from the curbs on both sides with all the plowed snow. Alot has since melted but another significant storm will be a serious problem. Last time I remember snow that was anything like this was back in the early 80s. Accordingly, I'm predicting some serious flooding when the big thaw and April rains come. Only time will tell. Hope I'm wrong.
swamprat69er
02-03-2011, 01:49 PM
Re; flooding, I hope you are wrong too. Don't you guys plow from curb to curb? That way IF a thaw comes, the water can at least get to the catch basins. Or are you sidewalks right up to the curbs?

At least it works on the smaller boroughs where a car really does get towed if it's not moved off a snow covered roadway. The more populated cities and immediate suburbs (like where I live), well, lets just say there aren't enough tow trucks in the entire state to account for all the offenders. The cars simply get plowed in. Their owners then dig them out, throwing the snow back into the roadway (which is also illegal). During a snowstorm, we'll get an automated phone message from our local PD stating that all cars that aren't removed from the roadways will be towed at the owner's expense. I'm the only one on the street who parks in my own driveway and none of the other cars ever get towed.

You are the example, IF you were to break the parking law that would give everyone else the incentive to do it. You know the mentality. 'The cop doesn't have to obey the law, so why should we.' Besides your having a glovebox full of parking tickets doesn't leave much room for other essentials. (38)
We are gonna get another couple of inches tonite, too.

Do yourself a favour and stay in school. You do NOT want to drive a truck for a living. Trucking IS the most over-regulated industry out there in the big working world.
As for the horns, I find that the square ones are more bassy than the round ones. More of a snooootttt-snooootttt, than a blaaat-blaaat.
I don't have that 'cabover' any more and the train that is with it were scrapped 5 years ago. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Hwy 403 to the 'new' Hwy 6 bypass around the airport and then 6 down to Caledonia and around Caledonia through Hagersville.
When I go to the farm (outside Binbrook) @ Caister Centre, I go the same way, but when I get to the continuation of Upper James (old 6) I only go to Chippewa Creek Rd and then cut across country. (In my Jeep) It is the only red Jeep TJ that I know of that has a tan roof AND a tan rear window.

Freightliners are nice and I don't blame you for not wanting a Volvo. I drove International Golden Eagles for CRST.
Are you jamming the standard ten speed or a thirteen?
I jammed the super ten. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Usually without the aid of the clutch, except stopping and starting of course. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
After looking at the picture of your rig...

@ Andy,
Swamprat is correct. Stay in school and get a job that doesn't require driving fourty tons while trying to dodge every idiot in a car that thinks you can stop on a dime. Believe me, they are everywhere. Then there is the idjits in highway construction that don't realize how much room a rig needs to turn and they set up barricades with barely enough room for a Volkswagon. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif I runned me over a fair few of those. The concrete ones suck the most.
Almost forgot, be prepared to spend at least six grand just to get a license.

Clutch? What's a clutch? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Is that a clutch of eggs? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif
I've got a 18spd with 3:80 rears 4 way lock-up on the drives, 475hp Cat. Sucks fuel big time. 4 miles to the gallon, but when you are pulling 138,000 lbs of slopping liquid you can't expect better. The tractor is a 2001 Freigtliner FLD 120 with a 'set back' front axle.
I would rather have the cabover back than either the conventional or the Volvo. The ride in the cabover was brutal,(20,000lb steer axle and Hendrickson spring ride suspension) but the view was exceptional!
Somewhere in this 'puter I have pics of the 'new' truck. I'll post one when I find it.

Got that big hungry cat under your bottom, eh? I don't think a Cummins could handle the loads you pull. At least not very long. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif
The 18 speed helps alot I'm sure. Super Tens spoiled me. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif Only needed to physically move the shifter five times. The other five were all button shift. Get'er up to speed, hit the cruise control and roll!

The cabover had a 400 cummins big cam 4 with a ten spd and 3:80's. Put 4 motors out of it in 8 years. NO, cummins cant do the heavy stuff. I dont know about the new ISXs' 600HP, how they are doing. Personally, I'd rather have a cat.
When I drew frieght in '98 I did it with a cabbage patch frieghtliner 60 series detroit 13 spd and dual straight pipes. That truck would fly and sing you a tune on the way. A very loud tune. The pipes came out after the bunk, so I heard very little of it. Everybody around me heard it tho. Ran PA, WV, NY, NJ, MA, RI mostly with it. A typical load was pick up kitchen cupboards in toronto and go to NJ and pedal the 8 or so drops, one pickup in RI then on to Boston and get the air frieght and back to Toronto. Boston to Toronto including Canada Customs=12 hrs.

The International I drove had air ride. It was nice. I didn't like pulling air ride trailers because I couldn't feel them in the seat of my britches.
The view is nice from the tree house but, climbing in and out of thing is a pain. My dad bought one and tried to run owner operator. Unsuccessfully. I was still young at the time and he let me take it around the block one day. The old bastage never said a word about the magic number required to shift the bloody thing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif I'm sure he had a good laugh at my expense but, he never let on. He was against any of us following in his footsteps. He didn't get his wish as two of us started driving anyhoo. As well as two of his grandsons.
After he retired, my co-driver and I stopped in for coffee one day and the old boy looked like a kid in a candy shop when he slid behind the wheel to have a look at what I was driving. I could tell he was itching to fire it up and head down the road. The old guy had itchy feet. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

When I started trucking way back when, for the first ten years I drove nothing but 5x4 trannys. Fords at that and gas motors. I would much prefer them, the 5x4's that is, especially in the winter.
I do like the air ride trailers for hauling juice. You just have to get used to the fact that they ARE going to lean over when you go around a curve, mainly because the air relies on a sensor to level the trailer again.

Air ride everything just makes it all feel spongey to me. Heck, it took me forever to get used to the cab rocking when coming up behind another truck. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
My dear old dad, God rest his soul, began his driving career after WWII. Gas powered jitneys with split shifter axles. You know, the kind where you hook your arm through the steering wheel and use both hands to shift the tranny and the axles simultaneously. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
swamprat69er

It is the spongey feeling you have to ignore. Although, you need to pay attention to it as well. You just get used to it. Slop wagons ARE a bit different to freight boxes. You get used to the slop and slosh, eventually. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif
I know them quite well. 5 on the main and 4 on the aux. You could shift them one at a time by kicking the aux. out of gear then shift the main and then drop the aux. into the gear you wanted.
1,000 RPM between gears on the main and 500 rpm between them on the aux.
I taught a few people how to drive them. I also taught a 14 year old how to drive with a 5x4.
