Very kind.

I'm attempting to learn.

I still cannot figure out or find research on how you were able to get that information from my dxdiag.

I'll continue to research elsewhere. Thanks again

In many cases neither can the rest of us ( figure out "exactly" where they get all the info from a Dxdiag ). But then, we haven't studied all that is on the MS developer's website about Dxdiag (not enuf time, too much info, make livings in non-computer-related fields).
That's why, if it isn't immediately obvious ( from own past experience or other Dxdiags posted here), we post here for the mods and other experienced technicians to figure it out for us, do what they suggest, and it almost always works out well - eventually.
No one who doesn't do this for-a-living can possibly keep up with it all. So, unless a suggested fix draws a rapid "Whoa! That's way off base!" response it will likely at least get you into the ballpark. ( Best to not implement suggested "fixes" immediately - unless it's an obvious no-brainer - till there's been time for a few more responses. If not, or if others are similar, then "go for it". )
The "moderators" will never steer you wrong and many of the regulars ( you'll get to know who they are over time )are really reliable too.
If one doesn't understand the steps suggested, a "How do I" (do that) is more appropriate here than a "Why do I" (do that).
In many cases "No One" knows "exactly" why a solution works here (especially for graphical display problems - even nVidia with the current lack of a fix for their latest drivers is the most obvious example) and given all the possible conflicts with millions of lines of code in the Operating System, Game, other applications loaded and maintaining active processes, and all the possible hardware configurations and memory allocations therewith "trying the suggestions" is about all that is possible ( especially with the latest-greatest hardware that hasn't had a long-term shakedown in this game or others ).
That's why there is a "Sticky thread" at the top of this forum titled "User suggestions that may help others".
Remember, this forum is all "user" contributions and no one ( including the Mods ) gets a dime for the time spent here.
Ubi provides server space and a wire (or fibre optics cable) and that's the extent of their investment.

Very good points.

I'm doin the best I can to take advice and do my own research and use things from the forum as they are intended. To help me succeed.

I just want folks to know I'm not makin this stuff up in my sleep. I went the recommended MSI website and asked the question if I had updated my MSI MB NVIDIA system driver, if I needed to update my CPU driver also. Here is the tech support response:

"Dear Customer,

You would need to update the cpu driver also, here is a link for the latest cpu driver.

http://download.msi.com.tw/support/dvr_exe/mbd_dvr/AMDCPU_VP001.zip

Sincerely,

Now, I just want to say this. Without folks' here encouragement and input, I'd have never been able to come up with my kickxxx system. And without everyone's patience, I'd never made it this far with things.

It seems to me the more research I do, the more conflicting info. I get. That is part of the reason I have such difficulty figurin'out which step to take next. Just wanted you to know why.

I understand no one is paid and all are tryin to help. I'm grateful. But, not bein an pro at this stuff, I'm also still confused about lots I read and such.

I think I'll try some things out. I suspect I'll have to find out several times how well Norton Ghost and Windows Restore work. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif Maybe not, but maybe.

Appreciate the help. I'll try to wait and come back when I've got things squared away better.

Thanks again

All the drivers, including your chipset drivers, are listed under System Devices. Now, figuring out which is what is another thing. Like you, I am still learning.

Possibly one of the reasons you are getting conflicting info is because you start new posts which spread info all over the place. It is difficult for others and yourself to keep track of suggestions this way. If everything was in one post then people can see earlier recommendations and comment on these. Another possible cause is that no-one will have all the necessary knowledge you seek so bits and pieces will come from those who have expertise in certain areas. Different people and companies can have different terms for the same thing so as steve v suggested you need to understand basics to fully understand the answers to some of the more technical questions you ask. check out the optimisation guide in my sig - it gives basic descriptions on computers and games -or check out some of the books available.

I admire your patience in this process, had it been me I would have desperate to get the new rig running and PF working right away.

Yea. It's been a challenge keeping up all the different threads and topics. I know I have answered the same question more than once in some of the different threads you have started. Dieg777 has a great point in asking that you stick with a particular thread and just ask the different types of questions in that one thread. If you hadn't noticed, it has been the same several m8s that have been posting in each of your threads. So it would be better for you, and the m8s trying to help, if you would start a thread and stick with it, even if the subject matter changes.

And I also commend you on your patience and your efforts in trying to understand so many different aspects of computing. I S! you sir!

I'm with Dieg and Quazi on the 'multiple threads' issue, your patience however is admirable!

Re: determining the chipset driver version from the dxdiag.

nVidia helpfully post the driver versions with the chipset package on the download page.

6.66 for instance:
Windows XP Driver Versions

* Audio driver 4.62 (WHQL)
* Audio utilities 4.51
* Ethernet driver 4.82 (WHQL)
* Network management tools version 4.88
* SMBus driver 4.45 (WHQL)
* NVIDIA PATA RAID driver 5.34
* NVIDIA SATA RAID driver 5.34 (WHQL)
* NVIDIA SATA IDE driver 5.34 (WHQL)
* NVIDIA RAID Application 4.82
* Installer 4.78

Comparing this to your dxdiag, taking the nForce4 Parallel ATA driver as an example:

Name: NVIDIA nForce4 Parallel ATA Controller
Device ID: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0053&SUBSYS_71251462&REV_A2\3&2411E6FE&0&30
Driver: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\nvata.sys, 5.10.2600.0534 (English), 5/17/2005 17:45:08, 92800 bytes
Driver: C:\WINDOWS\system32\idecoi.dll, 1.00.0000.0001 (English), 5/17/2005 17:45:10, 300032 bytes

The bit in bold on line 3 is nVidias way of describing the version (in this case it matches the current 6.66 driver contents).

Your system, like mine, does not appear to have the SMBus driver installed. I have yet to research why this is so, it may be intentional and I'm open to advice myself on it!

Driver: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\nvata.sys, 5.10.2600.0534 (English), 5/17/2005 17:45:08, 92800 bytes

Now to check the version number is up to date, I should go online w NVIDIA or MSI and look at the updates included in the latest version and see if it matches this for the "NVIDIA nForce4 Parallel ATA Controller" from the update and see if it matches the same controller on my current dxdiag. I'm assuming that this is just one of several item that could be checked this way. VERY COOL!!!!!!!

Yep that's the section http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
And yes it's one of several items that can be checked.

SMBus I mentioned above:

Name: NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management
Device ID: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0052&SUBSYS_71251462&REV_A2\3&2411E6FE&0&09
Driver: n/a

It is the System Management Bus, yet drivers do not appear to install with driver pack. Got some digging to do to find out why.

Well, I'm going into installation of my ATI X800XL drivers/software.

I looked at the ATI site and it looks like a newer version is available already (5.8).

The issues it resolved in older versions and the issues it has do not apply to anything I play or deal with, so I think I'll just stick with the driver that comes w/CD (5.6 I think)

Any advice, as I know this is one of my last 2 most tricky parts (Audigy drivers next)???

KapitanDeepblu
08-26-2005, 07:32 AM
Forget what I said.

I don't currently have any ATI drivers installed. Why would I install 5.6 or 5.7 and then turn around and uninstall them and install 5.8?

I'm downloading 5.8 to begin with. Yes, I apparently am not getting enough oxygen to what little brains I have.

Try the Audigy beta drivers from creative.
Sound good, surround separation is improved, and minimal install (no cp or other baggage).

Thanks for Audigy advice.

Whew!!!

Appears to have gone marvously.

ATI CCC5.8 installed and functioning (seems to be anyway). Lots of junk I can't tell about.

All seems well. Set restore pt.

Almost feel like stoping here, but since it has been 2 months since I played any WWII simulations except SH2 on my old dell, I'm sorta startin to get the shakes.

Audigy drivers next. TallyHoooooooooo http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I recommend just downloading the drivers or just select driver installation from disc as creative will spray a load of unnecessary software across your hard drive if you select full install from installation disc- you can decide yourself if you want this later on

If you have an audigy2 then I have installed the beta drivers from here http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/download.asp

make sure it is the SBA2_BETADRV_US_2_05_0000 and it is listed as

2. Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and Audigy 2 ZS series Beta driver with OpenAL support (18.84 MB) 5 Apr 05

Do you have to uninstall old drivers to intall this beta set??

It is recommended on the Creative site that anytime you are installing "Beta" drivers that you should uninstall your current drivers.

Like Quazi said (Hi M8)

Don't let the 'beta' tag put you off, I have been using them without issue for quite a while now.

OK, can I do that later?

I installed my Microsoft Office and 1 update (office SP1)

I'm bout where I wanna be for a backup.

I'm good with the Audigy beta, just don't use speakers, headphones only and was hoping to get to gaming some before too many more screw-ups on my part.

Unless it is just a must for IL2, can I wait and get a few flights under my plane???

KapitanDeepblu
08-26-2005, 09:22 AM
I'd like to:
1)run disk Defrag
2)reboot
3)run disk cleanup
4)reboot
5)run Lavasoft adaware
6)run Spybot S&D
7)run Spyblaster
8)Norton AV
9)reg. cleaner
10) reboot + set restore pt.
11) install and calibrate joystick
12)reboot, set restore pt., backup w/NGhost

Then, I'd like to look at installing some games.

I'd like to install the Audigy beta later if possible. I'd like to see if I can get thru this and get to a flight on IL2 FB.

Suggestions/thoughts?

your last dxdiag didnt show soundcard so you wont hear any sound - Id go install sound drivers first - then joystick - test joystick in gamecontrollers section of windows then install game as per instructions from airwarfare.com

Your list above is slight overkill and should not need done

1) and 3) above wont be required due to you having a relativly clean system so doesnt need
this now

5) 6) 7) 8) wont need done unless you have just updated these or havnt run these after installing them- Norton AV will be running in the background and will alert you of problems anyway

9) as per 1) and 2) above

so just before installing game do a backup and go for it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Ummm.

A defrag is a good idea.
With the creation and deletion of files during windows set-up it does get pretty messy.

Reg clean is also a good idea, default windows installation has reg errors of the bat http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I would install the beta as the first, and only, sound driver. It works and installs the bare minimum to get the audio subsystem working.

It's also pretty good too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

dieg777
08-26-2005, 09:45 AM
I will of course defer to B16ENK advise on defrag etc this so please follow his advice.

When you decide to install game it is important to test at each stage in case you get problems so - make sure you install ALL discs for each part of the game

install il2fb - run and test in quick mission quit

install aces-run and test

install pf run and test

install MERGED patch pf_patch303m (105,037,319 bytes) test
install MERGED patch pf_patch4012m test and fly

I have put this is a seperate post as this is the most important steps you can do to help us to narrow down any problems with install

Also, is my CPU driver up-to-date and what other drivers I need to update? Thanks

My AMD 3700+ San Diego reports the following:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\amdk8.sys ver 1.1.0 by AMD.

Previously I have downloaded AMD CPU drivers from Windows update, for K7 series CPUs.

Haven't got a clue where this K8 one came from! (Cool'n'quiet perhaps?).

Thanks guys.

Soundcard already installed. The dxdiag above is old.

Old sound drivers are already onboard.

It is just a habit to defrag/discan/diskcleanup before each game install.

Norton has been popin up every once in a while and telling me it blocked a Bla Trojan. 2X since I started this about 2 weeks ago. Usually after I use a windows update.

I'm gonna do 3 things.
#1, print and read the following:
-ATI users with graphic issues thread
-Pacific Fighters Tip & Tweaks
-User fixes that may help others
-Correct Patch Order - make sure you do it
right thread.
-Installing and Patching Guide from
Airwarfare site
#2, Read them again.
#3, Post again and get the answer to the following question.

The patch sequence seems to be very important. According to the info. on Airwarfare, If you intend to merge FB+AEP+PF, you install the games and then Patch 303m.exe and then Patch 401m.exe. and your up to date.

Now, in previous threads I had (yes I hear ya, which one, rite??? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif) I got advice to install each game indivudually and play it some before going onto the next game, which would result in the following sequence.

1) install IL2 FB
2) play a few missions
3) Install IL2 AEP
4) play a few missions
5) Install IL2 PF
6) play a few missions
7) Patch to 303m.exe
8) play a few mission
9) Patch to 401m.exe
10 play tons of missions.

Maybe I'm beating a dead horse here, but this seems to be a tricky spot. So I want to get it correct.

When I installed BROS (Before Reimage of Operating System) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif I performed the following sequence:

1) Installed IL2 FB
2) Installed IL2 AEP
3) Installed IL2 PF
4) Installed Patch 303m.exe
5) Installed Patch 401m.exe

This sequence did not work. I would get the into. screen and buttons to play. Once clicked, I would get the carrier screen for about 5 seconds, then it would disappear and nothing would happen. I would be sittin at my desktop. So, somethin was amiss.

My question is: If I install each game and want to play some missions to ensure it is running at each stage, do I need to install the patch for each game after each game install? For example, after installing FB, do I need to patch "patch122_over10.exe" before playing and moving on to install AEP?

B16Enk
08-26-2005, 10:09 AM
Nope. only patch 303m and 401m.

Also just fly a single qmb to confirm system co-operating http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Unless you get hooked of course http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Would anyone care to suggest a registry cleaner?

I used to use RegVac, but it won't run on my system for some reason.

Suggestions for a good reg. cleaner???

If you already have Norton System Works on your machine you could use Norton Windoctor from Norton Utilities ( for now ). It's all I've ever had to use and my old AMD 1800 with an ATI 9200SE video card runs 4.01m smoothly. Others may have a more thorough reg cleaner to recommend, though.
Oh, and about defragging after each step in the install sequence, I found it was necessary to keep my old slow system ( the machine's, that is ) from stumbling at the intro screen.
One other thing, it may not apply to your situation BUT, I also found it was wise to empty the Windows | Temp file after each install step and before defragging to keep bits of similarly named files from the previous install sequence that got loaded into the temp file from accidentally getting grabbed by the new one. It solved a hang-up that occurred partway thru the loading of things on Disk #2 that couldn't seem to be solved any other way - might have not been necessary if I'd done a complete power-down to reboot after a failed install instead of a warm-reboot but all I'd actually done were warm-reboots.
Glad to see you're almost there.

Thanks.

Don't have Norton Works, Just Norton Internet Security.

I used to use a free RegVac, but this system will not allow it to run. Would rather go for a better model if available instead of debugging RegVac at this point.

Thanks for the TempFile tip. I probably won't defrag too often. An IT friend of mine has advised that defrag runs some risk if you experience a power jump, outage or such while running. He tells me you can loose it all or screw it up sos you'd have to restore, or worse, reimage. He said it don't happen ofter, but to weigh the risk of danger against the gains carefully.

Got my SH2 world set up. This would not run under my old nVidia FX 5200 and I had to use 2 PC's. Runs great now.

Fixin to install SH3. I'm not planning on making any mods/changes to graphics cards etc.. until I get MOH,CoD,BF1942,B17 and IL2FB loaded. I'm a little nervous that IL2FB will not run again, so I think I'll enjoy a few missions of SH3 and replay MOH some before attempting. Like I said, I'm in need of a WWII sim fix and a break from IT issues. Thanks for the help. I should be lookin at IL2 late tommorow or Sunday.

Thanks for the great tips on defrag and temp folders. I've made a note.

Well, the day has almost arrived.

I've got to the point where I think things are ready to try IL2 FB +.

Here is how I understand things should go.

1) Install IL2 FB
2) Play (w/out patching) a few quick mission builder missions to ensure everything is working.
3) Reboot system
4) Set Restore pt.
5) Install IL2 AEP
6) Play (w/out patching) a few quick mission builder missions to ensure everything is working.
7) Reboot system
8) Set restore pt.
9) Install IL2 PF
10) Play (w/out patching) a few quick misison builder missions to ensure everything is working.
11) Reboot system
12) Set restore pt.
13) Install Patch 303m.exe
14) Play a few quick mission builder missions to ensure all is going well.
15) Reboot system
16) Set restore pt.
17) Install Patch 401m.exe
18) Play a few quick mission builder missions to ensure all is going well.
19) Reboot system
20) Set restore pt.
21) Backup system.
22) get a cold beverage, sit back and enjoy flight.

Now, I've not made any modifications to my system. No graphic card tweeks or such. I've updated MB/CPU/VidCard/AudigyCard. That is mostly all.

So, does this look correct?
Any suggestions??

Very good. Read the material.

I have a few ?'s (like you haven't heard that before) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

1)in the System Setpu and Tweaks article, it mentions under Driver Tab using OpenGL or DirectX. OpenGL is what I see recommended alot. As far as I know, all I have on my machine is DirectX 9.0c. I have an ATI X800XL card. Suggestions? I'm not sure I understand this part.

2) It mentions under Texture Mipmap Filter/Anisortopic that "only people with good video cards should use this". Is a ATI X800XL considered a "good" video card? ( I was assuming yes).

3) In the article General Graphics Set Up, it mentions a BIOS suggestion for AGP Apature size. I have PCI-e and not AGP graphics, do I need to worry about this??

Thanks

1) use opengl this is what game was developed for. Opengl drivers will be installed with the game

2) YES it is a good card- so try running with these on.

3) Nope dont worry about this

IL2 AEP works as well.

Well, I only have one game and 2 patches left.

I've been reading alot about the patches.

It seems everyone can get thru the game installs, but something goes arry on the patches. I have downloaded both patches to a file on my Ext. HD. Is there any way to see or check if they are currupt? I'd hate to get this far and have to uninstall and reinstall.
