I started a career in 1944 and saw that there were many different torpedo types to chose from. There is no discription like the German campaign has. Where can I get information on th e different types in the US campaign

There is a SH 4 guide among the posts somewhere and has torpedo info in it, but not sure where to find it so i'll give you the run down.
First of all, torpedos are pretty reliable from 1944 on so you shouldn't have to worry about dud's, premature exploders or running deeper than set for the most part. The different types are as follows:
Mark 10 steam powered- WW I era torpedo used mostly by S class submarines, but very reliable.Less of a hard hit than the Mark 14 and others but keeps the set depth.Top speed is 36 knots and range is around 3500 yards.I never fire them unless I am 2000 yards or less from target, usually 800-1000 yards.Obsolete in 1944, stick with the others.
Mark 14 steam powered- Speed is 46 knots on high speed setting, 36 on low speed.Maximum range is 9000 yards on slow, roughly 4000 on high.Very unreliable for most of the war though. You are playing in 44 so duds and prematures should be rare. They will still run 10 feet deeper than set until mid 44 or so.Easy fix, if you want it set for 20 feet, set your run depth for 10.I always set them shallow as possible, works better actually.
Mark 23 steam powered-An improved Mark 14, very reliable in 1944.Only one speed setting of 46 knots, range is roughly 4000 yards.Runs at correct depth so keel shots using the magnetic (contact+influence) detonator is effective.See your rec manual for keel depth of target, then set the torpedo to run 3 feet under and aim for the center, should break the keel, if it does not destroy it then it will sink shortly or be crippled and may require a shot to finish it off. This helps save torpedos.
Mark 18 electric powered-Wakeless torpedo due to the electrice moto helps achieve surprise on target.Downside is it has a top speed of 29 knots. Not great for "on the fly" shots if you use manual TDC or if target is making evasive manuvers, but highly reliable in 44 and the wakeless factor is nice.It has a lower range than the steam torpedos, max range is around 3500 yards. Also has a powerful warhead and does much damage.
Mark 27 "Cutie" electrice powered homing torpedo-
Wakeless torpedo but has a top speed of 12 knots which I have found it useless due to the low speed and can not tell you much about it, sorry.
Also, the one torpedo problem you do have to always worry about is a circular run. That is when a torpedo fires out, then veers off into a circle and comes back at you. This cost me my sub once and another time the torpeo hit me but was a dud.he Mark 14 will do it from time to time and was the dud that hit me.The Mark 18 as it did in real life(and sank the USS Tullibee and suspected of sinking others)has a nasty habit of doing this from time to time, so when you launch an 18, be ready to go flank and dive dive.
good luck.I hope all the above helped.

USS Tang was also a victim of one of her Mk 18's.

Ah not sure how I did not mention the Tang, I read Richard O Kane's book "Clear the Bridge" not too long ago.Sad how too many were lost not only to enemy action but to their own weapons. There are also 4 or 5 others that are suspected of being destroyed by circular run torpedos.Tang and Tullibee are the only ships who left survivors to tell the tale.sad.
