For those with the knowledge and background with how things really were...

What was the usual surface cruising speed for different boats? Was there an official set of naval guidelines? Was it determined on a boat-by-boat basis based on fuel/route needs? Just wondering.

Also, what is your normal surface cruising speed in SH4?

My usual cruise is 2/3rds and 8/9 knots, I get the best range to fuel ratio that way.

To be honest, running standard is a little wasteful, as your only picking up a knot or two and really potting your fuel economy.

I always set my speed to 10kts when transiting, works fine and never had any fuel problems.

I NEVER go beyond ahead 2/3 unless I'm in hot pursuit.

For getting from you base to the patrol area, best fuel economy is 8-9 knots, tops

Anymore...you might get stuck!

I'm with AbleMaster on this....10 knots is perfect. All the range you need and a little insurance to make sure you get home.

if I recall correctly, in the SH3 book, and in my Grey Wolves book. 10-11 knts was the most efficient surface speed for most subs (with the boat hull design)

over 11 knts, and you burn fuel expidentially, just to break water resistance.
