old luft offliner (likes realism) wants to test online

I have been playing il2 and fb for a few years now and have only recently become able to fly online via broadband.
I am having a few problems joining the ubi server and have also been advised that it would be better to get involved elsewhere. if i like it i would like to join a squadron - preferably axis as i have flown the aircraft more often.
Could anyone be kind enough to give me some hints and tips (technical) and point me in the right direction

p.s when i say realistic i do fly with the speed bar and basic map due to not having a massive screen but i would even consider hyper real combat later on
