Hello, I bought this game yestarday and am still learning.

I have a couple of questions about the career mode.

1. What is the difference between the two fleets you can select at 1939, exept starting location and boat. will they specialize in diffent things later on?

2. When you finish a patrol, is there any difference between exiting patrol right ther and then, or sail back to base and do it there?

Thanks for your time!

Hello Dragge-swe

For question one...your patrol areas will be different based on the boat you use, but yes, as time goes on, bases are generally moved to France and your boat choices do change as upgrades become available

For question two....when you end a patrol "at sea," the only difference I've seen is that you won't use the time it would take if you were to sail on to base....

Hope this helps

-Jeff

Question 2: You get 100 renoun points for sailing all the way back to base instead of ending your patrol at sea.

Thanks for your answers! good to know about the 100 renown.

But I already have a new question http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

In the career mode, is "patrol" the only mission you can get? or is there ever more advanced tasks? like: go here and destroy this batleship, or hunt down this specific ship and so on...

Thanks again

For the purposes of deciding which base you'd like to be stationed (depending on how fanatical a u-boat enthusiast you might be) you can easily research them at U-Boat.Net - The U-Boat Bases (http://uboat.net/flotillas/bases/). The game tries to be as historically accurate as possible so you can expect the same u-boat type availability, mission type and other oppurtunities/disadvantages as they were presented in WW2.

In the career mode, is "patrol" the only mission you can get?...

I'm keen to hear the answer to that one too. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes, unfortunately all you asked to do is go hunting in a certain grid coordinate, which you can also ignore.

Just to add a bit of extra help here:

Think of returning to base as another objective - that's why you get renown for it.

You don't have to actually dock your boat at your home base to end your mission properly. When you get within 15km (I think), try the 'exit patrol' option - you should then see another option "Dock at: base name". You have to choose this option to get the renown. If you aren't given that option, sail closer to base until you are given it.

This isn't true Pappy55 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. You get renown separately for:

1. Destroying enemy targets (ships/planes)
2. Patrolling your assigned patrol grid for 24 hours
3. Returning to base (with the 'Dock at..." option)

Renown awarded for these actions is not inter-dependent. So if you choose to just exit your patrol instead of docking at your base, you won't lose any renown that you may have earned for destroying enemy targets or patrolling your assigned grid for 24 hours.

I think of it this way: you are given a grid to patrol. Aim to do that, if only to get the renown points (although the assigned grids are usually in areas where there are frequent enemy merchants).

But on the way to your patrol (and on the way back) you can do whatever you like - so make your own missions up! I think this is better than being told what to do...

If you do some research (on this forum or other SH3 sites), you will find lots of tips from other players about popular convoy routes, task forces (which often include aircraft carriers) and capital warships that are in certain areas at different times of the war.

You can make it your own mission to hunt for one of these prize targets (e.g. go to Scapa Flow early in the war http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ) as well as patrol your grid.

Or, look at all the convoy routes on the printed map. When you plot your course to your patrol grid, see if you can make any detours that will take you into convoy territory.

If you get lucky and sink a lot of ships before you reach your patrol area but run out of torpedoes, you can decide to just head home. You'll only miss out on the renown for the grid patrol. But by going home early, you will reduce your chances of being caught defenceless against enemy warships.

Eventually you will find areas and routes where there are lots of good targets. But you won't get bored of these either, because as the war progresses, the shipping patterns change. And you may move to another base... From there, you will be given patrol grids in new areas of the map that you couldn't reach before, so there will be new opportunties and 'missions' to seek out...

Good hunting!

That was some invaluable information there VikingGrandad. I've read the manual from cover to cover and I don't remember that at all (but then, I may be getting old and senile) - Thank You for putting in so much effort to enlighten us newbies. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

No problem. You probably don't remember any of it from the SH3 manual because I don't think any of what I said is explained in there (it really should be though).

Don't forget the SH3 Community Manual website (http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Main_Page) if you need extra info that isn't covered in Ubisoft's inadequate 'manual' http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif. Unfortunately the site seems to be down at the moment though. Hopefully it will be back online soon...
