I've gone through all the threads and tried everything, yet I still get a pause when playing. Everyhing freezes for 2-10 seconds then resumes at a later point in time.

I have a:
Athlon 64 5000+
4 gig ram
Vista home premuim
GF-9800GTX-512 Mb Forceware 175.19

I've created a custom profile for IL2 1946 and set threaded optimization to off.

In the config.ini I set the ProcessAffinityMask=2

Aero and UAC are disabled.

If I reboot I can play or run replay a little longer before tha pausing appears.

a) do you have the wingman radio messages on, where you get audio messages whenever they say something to you? These can cause stuttering every time they say something new, I turned it off and don't get any stutters from that anymore. I can't remember how to turn it off, but it's a conf file edit you need to make, I'll dig it up if you want to try it.

b) if you have recently downloaded Vista SP1, you will need to reinstall your video drivers and NVidia forceware patches, otherwise your games may play really slowly.

I tried disabling wingman chatter via the setup. Sounds like it may not work and you have to edit the config.ini. If you could dig that up I'll try it.

I just got this machine a few weeks ago and it had SP already installed. I have a SB Audigy SE 7.1 and the drivers should be the latest.

I have 2 500GB Hard drives. I don't thing the paging is the problem.

I tried the ProcessorAffinity thing too using the instruction from M4Today. But I found it to be more jumpy then just leaving things as they were.

I think this is the part, add this in, I bolded the part that I think affects the wingman messages:

[game]
Arcade=0
HighGore=1

mapPadY=-0.046296295
viewSet=34
Intro=0
NoSubTitles=0

eventlog=eventlog.lst
eventlogkeep=0

If Wingmen messages (radio chatter) really causes these pauses, try to run dxdiag, and try to reduce Hardware acceleration for the sound card. Move the slider to "Standard" or "Basic" acceleration.

I've only ever seen long pauses like this when RAM amount was tight and the Java Garbage collector kicked in. With Vista RAM is never enough, although 4GB should do it. You might keep an eye on this possibility too.

If it is GC related, I would expect you to have more pauses when a lot of bullets are flying around (ANYWHERE on the map - not only in visible range) Ship AAA and especially the German Maultier AAA are very good in causing this type of problem. (anything with smoke tracing the bullets).

Tried the new .ini with the wingman cahtter disabled and still have the same problem. Interesting comment regarding the RAM being tight. When I had 2 gigs the pauses came earlier. When I put 4 gigs in I could run a little longer before the pauses.

I do notice if I reboot and run IL2 1946 immediately after a reboot it will start without pauses and run for a little while before getting them.

If I do something else like reboot and then run IE or dom somethine else before starting il2 the pauses seem to come up earlier or sometime immediately.

It seems like there's a memory leak or some sort of memory management issue.

I am using the windows firewall-as I've not yet looked into zone alarm and I am running AVG anti-virus. I also started disabling some services at boot up to see if that would help, but nothing so far.

I'm not sure about just throwing money at the problem and adding more ram, but it probably wouldn't hurt either.

It sounds more and more like a memory problem.

IL-2 has no memory leak. It can eat up a LOT of memory though. When 2GB RAM is reached the Java runtime garbage collector kicks in (pause) to clean up.

You could use FAST defrag (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/FAST-Defrag-FREEWARE.shtml) from SoftPedia (free). That will clean up better than Java GC and could prevent pauses.

Adding more than 4GB is only an option for a 64 bit OS. A 32 bit is limited to 4GB.

sfbaytf

Thanks for the link. I downloaded FAST defrag and rebooted. Atfer restart I had a little over 1gig freem memory. I started up IL2 nd ran some replays. The first one went fine, but the second on had the pauses. I exited IL2 and FD showed -969MB and Used Hard MEM 23%.

So indeed it looks like I'll need more ram. Hoe 8 gig will be enought as that the most my motherboard supports!

sfbaytf
08-03-2008, 11:12 AM
Looks like I was reading the FD wrong. Looks like I have over 3 gigs free, the -969MB is whats being used so its probably not a lack of memory that is causing the pauses.

I'm about ready to give up. The only other thing I can tinhk of is a possible issue with my NVIDIA video card drivers.

I'm not fimilar with the Java runtime garbage collector. I'll have to do some research on that.

Have you tried turning off any firewalls you have? Make sure you know how to turn them back on when you're using a web browser or whatever. I know that firewalls and anti-virus programs can cause havok with a lot of games.

Once I accidentally hit "play online" in Il-2 and it brought up a Windows Firewall message. I closed the message and went back to the game and after a while I realized that somehow the firewall had completely turned off the ally AI in the game--I would tell my wingmen to attack the enemy and they would just keep flying in a straight line while I got shot up by the enemy. Kind of unrelated to your problem but I was surprised at how the firewall affected the game like this, it was kinda funny once I realized what had happened. It didn't go away until I totally restarted my computer.

You can start the java garbage collector from the console in IL-2.

Press Shift+Tab to enter the console.
You will see white text superimposed on the 3D screen. The command to start the garbage collector is gc or cg I'm not sure. type gc followed by <Enter> and it should start. At least you can decide when it will kick in this way.

[EDIT] I just tested in a quick mission.
Type Shift+tab to enter console
Type GC <enter> (case sensitive!) to invoke the garbage collector.
The console will report the free memory.
Shift+tab will exit console again.
You should immediately get the same pause you describe when invoking the garbage collector.
If it is different something else is causing your pauses.

I don't think more memory is an option. Avoid small arms like small cal AAA, ships, german Maultier etc. Anything with tracing smnoke takes up LOTS of memory. In general it is not worth the memorypenalty when you can as well use 88mm FLAK e.g. (the black puffs). The memory limit for the garbage collector may be set to a different value for Vista. My testing was all done on XP. Vista is NOT for gaming. No matter how much money M$ pours into pro-Vista propaganda.

The cause for the problem is VERY technical and complicated. In short:
On 32 bit M$ OS an application can only take 2GB RAM.
This 2GB is horribly fragmented with OS stuff all over the place.
Java's Virtual Machine needs unfragmented, continuous free memory.
JVM's memory management is not dynamic enough (it can't shrink/grow on every level).

Just believe me, adding RAM will not help, and it is not your video card/driver's fault.

You'll just have to live with it.

I presume you're talking about Vista, Max? I have an AM2 setup with 2Gb RAM, running XP Pro, and I don't see any of these kind of problems. Flak, object density, cities, it's all grist to the mill. I might get mild stutters over Berlin, but no long freezes like the topic-starter is mentioning.

It's a JVM problem, so it will show on both Vista and XP. It will show on Vista a lot sooner and more severe because of all the DRM/UAC and other OS overhead that gobbles up RAM.

To induce it on XP, set up a mission with 16 German maultier distributed around a map and let 8 or so enemy fighters fly above it. The JVM will have consumed it's 2GB RAM in no time once the shooting starts, at that point the GC kicks in and the game pauses for seconds on end. When the GC is finished the game continues. If you keep an eye on RAM at the same time you will see available RAM rise at the same time. Less RAM will show the pause earlier.
You can induce it directly by issueing GC (garbage collect) in the console while flying.

If your system has less than 2GB the pagefile will be used causing additional problems.
I'm running XP Pro SP3 on am AMD 64 X2 with 2GB myself. issueing GC in an Okinava quick mission with only me flying on auto directly after mission start resulted in a long pause immediately. I'm running a fresh OS with the latest JVM from Sun.

The stutters over heavyly populated areas are caused by texture map transfers to the graphics card. Reducing visibility distance will improve the situation immediate. You will have stutters in a particular area only once. Fly over it a second time and you'll have no stutters.You will have better FPS a second time too. This is true for all maps, missions, even tracks. To get good benchmarks from TheBlackDeath let it run completely, set it to loop and measure on the second run.

I have a Core 2 duo E8400 with a Superclocked EVGA
8800GT and I have no such problems. I run XP with only 2 gigs of Corsair Value Select PC2-6400 Ram.
I might get a microstutter or two over Berlin, that's it.

sfbaytf, please post a dxdiag report, there are many potential causes of pausing, the java thing may be it or it may be a red herring. Also post your complete conf.ini.

The 'System Devices' section appear rather 'empty' to me.

Looks like you never installed Chipset drivers.

Is your motherboard an MSI K9AG Neo2-Digital?
If so, this driver-page may be of help: click here (http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1241)

And, after those drivers were installed succesfully,
- You should set the HW Acceleration for the Audigy back to Full.
- You may want to try and run 1946 in Perfect Landscape.

Good Luck!

Interesting. I got the machine prebuilt so I don't know if the chipset drivers were ommited. I did disable the on board sound on the motherboard via the BIOS as I have a Sound Blaster card.

Yes my motherboard is a MSI K9AG Neo2 digital. I'm now downloading the ATI System Drivers for RS690/RD780/RD790/RX780/RX780/RS740/SB600

as I assume thats what you're talking about.

Yes.

Interesting. You need those chip set drivers installed first of all.

You got a Realtek HD ALC888 Onboard and are using a SB Audigy 2 under Vista...

I sugest you pull the Audigy 2 out and give the Onboard a try, think you be suprised.

On the Realtek site are the latest drivers for the Chipset and HDMI + a program called Soundback wich works a bit like Creative AlChemy to get full soundeffects back under Vista.

I went ahead and downloaded the chipset drivers, installed and rebooted. Same thing-although I could run replays a little longer before the dreadded pauses resumed. I ran dxdiag again and nothing looks different on the second report. (I can post later). I've yet to reinstall the RAID drivers as I have no floppy and will have to figure out a different way to install.

I had a motherboard ASUS A7N8X that had ouboard sound and it didn't always work, thats why I disabled the Realtek onboard sound. I also play other games like Medieval Total War2, Company of Hereos, NW2 Civ4.

No studdering issues and. LOMAC has a slight pause.

Ok, you did say vista 64 right? Then you need to run the 64bit dxdiag and post that. There is definitely something wrong, you should be able to run this game no problem with that setup. I did notice from your conf.ini that you are not running in perfect mode, why is that? Are you using opengl or directx? Try opengl with hardwareshaders=1 and see if it's any better.

Are you using opengl or directx?
He's running OpenGl, see conf.ini:
<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre">[GLPROVIDER]
GL=Opengl32.dll</pre>

I was thinkin' he was not running 64, but indeed, that could explain be the issue with Directx report...

the Asus used a difrent older type of onboard audio.

For Vista 64 bit i really sugest you try the Onboard you have now, also try running the game with all sound disabled to see if that helps.

Other common things to cause stutters are Memory, Powersuply or Heat.

Maybe downloading the drivers directly from the chipsets manufacturers sites (including for your CPU) will help because you find the latest drivers there and the ones on the MSI site are a few months old already.

I believe NDSCamp is correct, with vista there is no more direct hardware acceleration accept through OpenAL which is not yet widely used, so any advantage Audigy2's or X-Fi's have over recent onboards are moot in most cases. Regardless I don't think this is the issue though, but anything is worth a try.

I already downloaded and ran the dual core optimizer. So I don't think that's it unless there are different flavors.

I tell you when IL2 does run its beautiful and smooth. I'm not running in "perfect" mode as the setting I'm running at are the highest the setting will allow.

Once I get things to run smoothly, I'll edit the config.ini for higher setting. I do nothing in the dxdiag 64 dump that some of my sound blaster drivers are not signed. if that the problem I'm going to smack myself over the head.

Make sure all Soundeffects are off on the Soundblaster.
Vista does not suport Audio Hardware exept for OpenAL Sound (wich IL2 is not) thats an other reason to take the Soundblaster out.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean here. Try perfect mode, I've seen some cases where the newer cards actually do better in perfect mode and your card should be able to handle it no problem, heck my old ATI 9800pro could do perfect mode.

Check your NVidia control panel, if Extension Limit is switched to on, chances are the Perfect Landscape option will be greyed out.

Switch it OFF, and also 'Threaded Optimization' (Also in NVidia's control panel).

May also improve performance...

First off I'd like to thank everyone for your suggestions.

I still have the pausing issue. I removed the Sound Blaster card and used the onboard sound. I ran the recording Ki84 vs P-51 and it ran fine, but when I played the ME262 vs P-80 I got not only the pauses, but the sound kept looping and it locked up. After changing setting the sound seems normal, but the pauses resumes.

Don't know what to do at this point. I'm going to load up MTW2 and see how the onboard sound works.

Pausing still exists. I also ran LOMAC and ran some replays and I get looping sound, I also played some MTW2 and the sound just cut out. -so at this point I'm thinking of disabling the on board sound and re-installing the sound blaster card. I went into the bios and stated playing arond with the Video memory apeture settings. Still getting pauses. I'm now seeing the Windows Memory Diagnostic run at boot up, but I don't see any errors detected. I reseated the memory, but sill getting pauses.

I'm thinking of seeing about getting replacement memory.

I never had so much trouble with a new computer system.

Run memtest ( http://www.memtest.org/
) and also check for overheating (there are many free temp reading programs out there).

HWMonitor from www.cpuid.com (http://www.cpuid.com) is really good.
You find CPU-Z and PC Wizard there also.

I'm beginning to think this issue is limited to IL2 and LOMAC. I will get pauses on both, yet once I exit I can play MTW2 on the highest setting as well as Battle of Britain with the DMX mod and texture add on cranked up to full with no problems. Once I exit and go back into IL2 or LOMAC the pause/freezing is still there and when I exit out I can go back into MTW2 and BoB and play with no problems.

Falcon4 Allied Force also seems to run fine. I'd rather not have to re-image and setup a dual Vista64/XP boot...

I downloaded the HW monitor and my cpu is running at 25-28c for the core0 and 18-20c for the core 1

The GEForce 9800gtx is running around 60c
