I am having a heck of a time with trying to target enemy ships in SH5. SH4 was so much easier and even made more sense.

I could never get any of my torpedoes to hit an targets until the other day I read a post on here using the 1-2-3 method. Today I tried that. It worked but you have to be so close to the enemy ship to get your 3 to connect with the enemies 3. I checked. When my 3's were lined up I was 1KM from the enemy ship. Heck, if Im that close, I may as well just jump over board and swim to the enemy ship and have a knuckle fight with their captain.

SH5 has gone away from the sim aspect and made the game more of an arcade style game. That is too bad.

To me, it seems more realistic to have the bow of your boat leading your enemy ship by say 15 degrees (give or take, depending on the speed, distance, and direction of your enemy) to get the right solution to fire your torpedo. It seems so unrealistic in SH5 to just line up numbers to get a good firing solution even tho your enemy could be as much as 40 degrees off your port or starboard side.

I could be wrong here but I do not think that torpedoes in the early part of the war were "smart" where they could track an enemy ship if they were as much as 40 degrees off from the direction the bow of your uboat is facing.

Lining up the bow of your uboat to give the torpedo a 15 degree lead seems more realistic and requires more skill.

This is one conversation I can't even imagine would take place at a naval base among uboat captains:

"Man, I could not get any of my torpedoes to hit any targets"

"Well.. did you line up and connect your 3 with his 3?"

"Oh duh!! That's where I went wrong"

I've never used the "1-2-3 method" and have only the vaguest idea of how it works. I run at 84% realism. That's every box checked except for map update and the external camera. Now that there is a mod that fixes the stadimeter, I could play at 96% but I prefer map update.

Playing at higher realism means that you have to use the TDC (though you should do a search for my posts about hydrophone/sonar only attacks and the "Excel TDC").
