Ubi will no longer use Starforce for any future game it publishes. This was a wise decision for them as people were not wanting to purchase games with it in use. I had one SF protected game returned already, unopened of course. Now we can all look forward to enjoying Ubi published games again.

Great news for people like me. I avoided several of their titles based on this one fact. Hopefully they'll re-release SC:CT with the new protection, presumebly SecureROM, so I can go buy it.

I wanted to play 'Silent Hunter III' like hell, but decided not to buy it because of the SF BS.
At last, they took a good decision for a change!
Now, let's see if they can make a good R6...

The new job is going great. Some long hours I tell ya. We have a break for a few days, but to be honest, I am a bit antsy to get back to work even if it means having to get up at 5 or 5:30 AM again.. No, I have not been able to get the new comp yet.
For the record, I wanted SC:CT and it had already been purchased, but I had it returned unopened due to SF.

Lol i wonder what copy protection they will use now.... Secure rom? Thats a joke. Starforce is more effective, if there loosing sales because of starforce then it must be because starforce is preventing people from cracking the game, not that the software is messing wtih there system. For some...

I'm not a hacker and won't buy a starforce game.
Great news!

Have you even been following what is going on with Ubi and SF? There has been a class action lawsuit filed in California against Ubi for using SF. Ubisoft Complaint (http://eplaw.us/sf/UbisoftComplaint032406.pdf) details the reasons the whys behind the lawsuit. This is probably the biggest reason why Ubi is no longer going to use SF. Fans on the forums here have also made their displeasure at Ubi using SF (along with those who have had their hardware damaged after installing games published by Ubi with SF) for CP.
Here is something else you may have forgotten. Sony got blasted for installing CP without the users knowledge last fall by the Department of Homeland Security. Does it make sense for Ubi to continue to do the same thing?

I've seen countless people on various forums saying that StarForce nuked their box. There have even been people saying that it nuked their RW drives. That is not software, if you burner stops working it's now a hardware issue. On top of this a few weeks ago StarForce released a fake website that claimed based on this website's "independent" study that StarForce was great and there are no consequences. This company is shameful at best, the real term I'd describe them as can't be said here. I'd put StarForce in the same breath as GAIN, CWS, and any other spyware out there.

I really hope they don't go that route. I don't really care one way or another about SF, it hasn't done anything to my system, but I do have problems with SecureROM games. My one CD drive refuses to read them at all, luckly my DVD-RW drive does.

I agree with DayGlow, I rather use StarForce then Securom or Safedisk, which by the way installs a driver exactly the same as Starforce, so if you installed bf2 eek. Offline Starforce excells when you read articles like the BBC one about Piracy (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/4886360.stm) you get an idea how much real loss companies make. That article maybe about movie piracy but you get the same type of people churning out games in exactly the same quanity, I have seen it first hand where I live.
I have never seen SCCT or any starforce game at a computer fair or carboot sale, safedisk and securom ones are always there with a crack on the disk, so even the not so savvy people know how to play them. Starforce, people have problems coping the disk, which makes it so hard for these pirates to sell. Fair enough some folk have problems with it but.. I think its justifiable a small number can't play sounds bad I know. But you can't just use nothing as a replacement, there being no CP will just help these scum making a huge profit, ā£1000($1700) a day, which is more then I earn a month they make, and they will reap it.
Online people get around the protection, and because they can, they think it's useless. They need to unplug themselves from their pc go outside in to the real world, and see whats happening in terms of computer game piracy, you would be suprised.

There is Tages, but I am not sure how it works. From what I read, it is better than other types of protection.

It works exactly like Starforce, maybe why they're using it? http://www.tagesprotection.com

Do these alternate copyright protection devices destroy and compromise the security of ones computer like starforce [allegedly] does? I can live with companies keeping track of what games I play.

The real question is, does it install a driver like SF does?

This is good for me.
I didn't have a problem with it with CT, but I'd rather not continue to get it with games. I may get LD with it, but at least nothing else will have it.

It does indeed, taken from their site "some TAGESā"¢ components are low level drivers." Most copyprotections now use drivers to work those are...
SafeDisk (Macrovision)
SecuRom (Sony)
StarForce
