View Full Version : Superman irks me

I must say I've never been a huge Superman fan. This whole notion of a superhero who is invulnerable except in the presence of green rocks always seemed too much like cheating to me. Look at me, I'm Superman, your bullets don't hurt me! Look, I can fly! I have heat vision! I have X-ray vision! I have frost breath! Why? Because I was born on Krypton! If Superman can fly in outerspace, then why did his parents have to put him in a spaceship to send him to earth? And how was it that practically any two-bit criminal was always able to get their hands on this ultra-rare substance known as Kryptonite? I think that's why it was so cool when Doomsday was able to defeat Superman using nothing but brute strength - but then again, Doomsday was also an alien with super strength, and Superman didn't stay dead, so does that really even count?
Give me Batman or Spiderman anyday.
This reminds me of a good Superman joke:
One day Superman is flying around, just going about his normal business. He looks down, and low-and-behold, he spies Wonder Woman laying out by her pool, completely naked and spread eagle.
"Hmmm," thought Superman. "With my super-speed, I can fly down there, have my way with her, be out of there, and she'll never even know I was there!" So he procedes to fulfilling his lust, and is in and out without anyone seeing him.
"What the hell was that?" exclaimed Wonder Woman.
"I don't know, but my butt hurts like hell," replied the Invisible Man.

So dirty.
But your point is well taken. The problem with Superman is that he has too much power. I take the same issue with Green Lantern.

Superman is still a pansy. Batman has owned him on multiple occasions.

This was much more moving than Superman's death....

Remember, Superman was a baby. so they put him in a spaceship that was sent to earth. Babies are still babies...he couldn't have flown all the way as a baby. Plus he didn't discover his powers until adolescence

Truth, Justice, and the American way. Superman was created as a nationalistic icon to give kids hope for America or some ****.
SlickRick posted this (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/4091020922/m/9971038644/r/9971038644#9971038644) not to long ago in reference to Superman being an asshat. Enjoy.
Oh, and incase it isn't glaringly apparent I completly agree with you Brim.

You guys all make valid points about Superman, he has become to powerful over the last decade. But he is basically a solar battery, so the more radiation he absorbs and all that. He wasn't created to be an american icon, that is just where his popularity put him at the time. He was actually created as a sci- fi character for two teenagers (Siegal & Shuster) to use to break into syndicated newspapers but everyone turned them down. Then DC comics took a chance in a lead story for the Action comics anthology book. And it has only been in recent years that he has become overtly a christ allegory. His Origin actually closely follows the 10 commandments. (Story not Movie) And his name Kal-El is hebrew for "Voice of God" or something like that. The main thing though is that he is too powerful. writers have lost the ability to craft stories that can put him in situations that us mere humans can relate to. That is why he has been overtaken by Batman(my fav),Spider-man, and even Daredevil.
There is a very good documentary available at Wal-Mart called the amazing story of Superman. it costs $10. and is by far the most comprehensive bio of the man of steel that i have ever seen. Highly recommended. Batman in recent years has started to suffer similar to superman. They have made him to smart, to dark, and to stubborn not to mention that his history is so trampled on that they brought back Jason Todd. The Robin in the above post. The storyline started with some good promise but they have just ruined it and any hope of the character being worth a ****. I have faith that the new movie will be a very enjoyable use of my $8 It might not become a classic like the'78 pic but that is ok.

Is it just me, or did anyone else get turned on by the thought of Wonder Woman laying out by a pool completely naked and spread eagle?

Then you'll probably like this. There is a Wonder Woman movie slated to come out next year, and Priyanka Chopra is in negotations to play the lead role. I know what you're thinking: Priyanka who? But check out this pic:

I've heard rumors that Morena Baccarin might be interested in the role as well. I'd love to see her as Wonder Woman.

Dude, Magiz.....
It's OK to have testosterone. Lets face it, Wonder Woman runs around in hot pants with a bustier that leaves very little to the imagination, all while deflecting bullets with her braclets and looking to tie up men. I don't think there is a planet or system of government where that isn't hot.

Batman is way more intriguing then superman, Batman is a mortal who has to rely one smoke and mirrors (more cables then mirrors), no super powers. Superman is virtually unstoppable, he should save every on because he can. It would be interesting to see him struggle between being a rogue good guy and a self centered simi-villain, instead of the Golden Boy/Mr. Perfect he is shown as.

Monica Bellucci I'm hoping to see for the part. That **** about Lindsey Lohan wanting it made me laugh yet made me scared at the same time. I love WW with all my heart so whoever gets her roll, I want her to be amazing. I hear Mr. JW keeps throwing out scripts for her movie because he wants it just right. Can't blame him. I'll kick his *** all the way to the Amazon if he doesn't. D-:<
Now they need to get Power Girl her own movie http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif.

Joss Whedon is a great choice for this movie, I just hope he doesn't over analize it to death and give up. Morrena Baccaren will probably be the onr to get it. Charisma Carpenter is begging for the role. I was shocked to find out she is actually 36 years old. Talk about a M.I.L.F. Someone that I always thought would be good in the role is Claudia Black. She played Aerin Sunn on Farscape. Beautiful woman. Not glamorous looking like the others, But When she is fully made up she is very HAWT! She could also pass for Greek and she is very believable in action scenes. Plus, she is practically unknown outside of genre circles. You cannot use a bigtime star in any of these hero roles. It just does not work.
Monica Bellucci is also incredibally beautiful but will never get the role. Unless they change what i have heard and decide to do an older wiser wonder woman. Monica is 45 years old maybe 47 by now. She would make a great Hippolita though.
The Superman DVD that i mentioned in my other post focuses mostly on the actors that have portrayed Superman in all of its forms, but also goes really in-depth about the comic history as well. Check it out.

Bah to all of you Superman haters!
As one of the biggest (if not the biggest) Supes fans in here, I must defend him. :P
1) Golden Age Superman was more or less invincible, too damn fast (might give Flash a run for his money, no pun intended), and too unbeatable. Fast forward to Modern Age Superman and he is anything but invincible. Modern Age Superman is "strong", but not strong enough to move planets. He's fast, but not as fast as the Flash, etc. Believe me, I agree with most of you guys that a superhero that doesn't lose is boring, but as time progressed, Superman has actually been modified and toned down for the better:
a) It's a known fact that Superman's weakness is Kryptonite, but as time progressed, there were other types of Kryptonite that's been introduced (other than the green variety) that has had different effects, for better and for worse. Red Kryptonite can give unusual and sometimes uncontrollable mutations to Supes, and Gold Kryptonite has to be the deadliest of them all... it takes away a Kryptonian's powers for good.
b) Throughout the ages (Silver Age Superman and up), it's been demonstrated that Superman is weak against magic. People adept in magic like Mr. Mxyzplk will give Superman lots of problems, as he cannot defend himself against it.
c) There are several reasons as to why Superman isn't as "strong" and "powerful" as he used to be. One of them is being revived back from the dead (he didn't receive back the full extent of his powers), and another is splitting into two energy-based beings (Superman Red and Superman Blue).
d) Superman's greatest weakness, arguably, is not Kryptonite, but rather, his own self. Superman, at every sense of the word, is a boyscout. He's too trusting and naive at times, and will not use full force unless necessary. This is also the exact reason why someone like Batman defeated him several times... because whereas Batman will use ANY advantage he can possibly have, Superman will not, until it's too late. If it weren't for Superman's "honor", he'd snap Bruce Wayne's neck in a heartbeat. And whereas Superman is invulnerable... his loved ones aren't. Villains who get a hold of people that Superman cares about...forces him to negotiate with his enemy. Finally, as "strong" as Superman really is, he has a terrible burden of carrying the weight of the ENTIRE world into his shoulders. If, for any reason, Superman fails, he carries the blame so selflessly that he will go into exile, to punish himself of his failure.
2) Don't be naive. Babies aren't even capable of independent thought, so a baby Kal-El flying through space is totally out of the question. Plus, Jor-El and Lara's intention of putting young Kal-El into a spacepod was to ENSURE the survival of their child by landing into favorable environments. It doesn't matter who you are... without nourishment and water, you're going to die. Even if you're Superman... even more so if you're baby Superman.
3) You are quite uninformed about Doomsday, Brimtown. First off, he isn't just an "alien light form with great strength". Doomsday is a genetically engineered specimen designed by a Kryptonian scientist who wished to create the "ultimate specimen". In order to achieve this, he exposed his specimen to extreme conditions, harsh environments, and/or natural predators that would eventually lead to the specimen's death. From here, the scientist would clone the specimen... and would repeat the process over and over until the evolution process was sped up, and the specimen itself developed an innate ability to prevent itself from dying from the previous cause of death... all of which are being recorded into his genes. So whereas Superman can defeat Doomsday the first time (and kill him), Doomsday would naturally come back to life, stronger than ever, and will not be able to die vs. Superman. If Doomsday continues to evolve, he is potentially Superman's greatest enemy... I guess the only way you can kill someone "invincible" like Superman is pitting him against someone who constantly evolves and improves. In essence, Doomsday is a villain that is a lot more "unfair" than Superman is. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Bring it on, Superman haters! :P
P.S. Green Lantern is another favorite of mine, and he is nowhere close to being "too powerful", either. Although the Power Ring lost its weakness to the color yellow, you'd STILL have to recharge the ring (which hinders its effectiveness through long periods of time). Also, the powers of the GL ring is directly correlated to the will power, courage, and IMAGINATION of the wielder. If you aren't creative or imaginative in any way, a tool like the GL ring is next to useless.

Morena is too small, and unless they plan on making Wonder Woman ninteen, Monica Belluci would be just fine. Does she look almost fifty?

Monica is a goddess in the flesh. I would love to see her as wonder woman. The reason that i say she is to old, is because Brian Michael Bendis did an interview with Joss Whedon for Wizard and he stated that wonder woman would be younger and at the start of her career in mans world. Between 19 and 25. Lately the sudios have actually been talking about wanting Angelna Jolie for the role. Not only would she look great in the outfit, but she would be believable in acion. And don't think about those **** *** Tomb Raider movies. There wasn't enough story availible to give a really good adventure too. That and the script writers sucked.
