I'm trying to understand the size difference between the two. The US Sub feels alot bigger... and it seems like I need alot more crew to run just a few things! :O

The USN subs are generally a lot bigger than U-boats. From a logistics point of view, the USN subs needed to be bigger to carry enough fuel and provisions for long range patrols in the Pacific - and also to carry more torpedoes, as pack operations were not used as much in the USN as in the Kriegsmarine.

I've never seen a side-by-side visual comparison of the German/US sub classes, but the displacements alone give you an idea:

(approx. surfaced displacement tonnage)

Type II: 270

Type VIIC: 770

Type IXC/40: 1100

Type IXD: 1600

Type XIV (Milk Cow): 1600

Type XXI: 1600

S-class: 800-1000

Porpoise lass : 1300

Salmon class: 1450

Sargo class: 1900

Gato class: 1500

Balao class: 1800

Narwahl class: 3100

Anyone got any data on typical dive times for U-boats and USN subs?

Wow the Sargo is big! I thought it was the same thing as the Salmon just upgraded equiptment 0.o :O?

those numbers sure do point out the difference well though! Especially since I spent most of my time in type 2s and 7s!! No wonder I feel like I'm driving a sea elephant :P

I posted this on subsim awhile back:

-------------
a few screenshots of a Late war type 9b uboat, next to a prewar Tambor fleet boat. I think the scale on both sub models is the same, but i could be wrong.

(in any event, i think comparing late war 9D2' uboat to a late war Tambor or Gato would be a fairer comparision, in both dimension, and deck armament )

I later followed up on that post with this:

Again, this is a Tambor class fleet boat, next to a type 9B uboat. Except this time, both boats are in their late war configurations/modifications.

(pic posted earlier, no sense in making 2 shots of the same thing since the hull isnt changing sizes)
