View Full Version : Could SS be the final true "GR" of the series?

I don't doubt for a second that GRAW will be a good game, but I can't help but think that SS will be the last of the "traditional" GR series.

Graw looks good, and I mean VERY good. However, the reason I wanted something closer to OGR was because it was unique. I'm sure GRAW will be like a quality porterhouse, and will deliver high on the scale of entertainment AND quality, but there are already many quality games out there.

RB63, Halo, Halo2, Black Arrow, Splinter Cell, SCPT, SCCT, etc... All of these games and many more are all quality games, but what I don't want is a porterhouse every night. Don't take that the wrong way, I love a good porterhouse, but I don't want to eat it EVERY NIGHT. I need my salmon, chicken, turkey, tuna, filet mignon etc...

OGR was indeed very unique, and I personally would consider it the filet mignon, and I for one will be sad to see it disappear into the background and turn into another porterhouse.

Again, this does not mean that I think GRAW will be a bad game, but that it is just another good game, but lacks any significantly unique qualities.

OGR is still there sitting on your video game shelf and can be played anytime you like, even with others on XBOX Live.

I've even played it a few times online again recently.

However, at any one time, OGR online Live CO-OP games seem to number 3 or 4. One of the "poor" qualities of OGR is the maximum of 6 (or is it 8?) online players in one "game room".

Then, when you go to GR2 online CO-OP games, there are usually about 40 to 50 games you could sign-in to, where room sizes have increased to 16 players.

It will be interesting to see which games get the most online participation, when they're all finally released and we have 5 GR XBOX games to pick from (GR GRIT GR2 GRSS GRAW).

I thought the final 'True' GR was Island Thunder?

Well, GRSS is supposed to be more like OGR. I'm giving UBI the benefit of the doubt.

I guess the answer to the question would depend upon the sales figures from GRAW.

SS so far has been mentioned as a return to more of the original, but, unless the element of stealth is brought back at least somewhat, all the other complaints being fixed are really just gravy. ...and gravy can't satisfy that hunger that GR2 left me with...

I definately agree with you on most every point Jchung.

How old is OGR and GRIT? They lasted for quite a while, and I truely believe that the only reason they arent being played as much now is because of three reasons:

1.You can only play the same maps about 7,486 times before they become a little stale, especially without random AI placement.

2.Graphics are severly dated compared to GR2 or most other games out there. Most people want new and shiny and cutting edge.

3.The white button.

That's it.....If they were to come out with an updated OGR and fix those aspects then I would pick up atleast two copies without hesitation. Closer to the point, I would pay large amounts of money for it because in my opinion OGR and GRIT were the only Ghost Recon games made. They were great games, some of the best I have ever played, and gaming is my hobby, which means I sink a lot of money into and for gaming.

I won't buy GRSS or GRAW when they first come out simply because of the **** they shoved at us with GR2. I will wait this time and listen to what others say....and not gaming mags... the forums.

GR2...a pig in sheeps clothing, and because of it a leary customer. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

I was thinking the same thing... if "everyone" waits, then who's going to be here to post? The only people who would "rush out" would be people you guys wouldn't trust anyways!!

EDIT: sorry, Klean, didn't see your post... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Can you guys imagine everyone on these forums just sitting around waiting for somebody to play it so they know if it's worth buying and the game sells like four copies (and those would be to the prepubes down the street who quickly take it back and trade it in for the new Sponge Bob game!)

Well, Klean doesn't have to wait, as she has THREE Xboxes. What is the cost of a couple games to her when she lives in a castle? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

@Klean

BTW, I still don't buy your story of being a working class gal. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I have a good idea. Let's all play a new game while we wait for UBI to put out another serious tactical sim. We will all sit around and see who breaks down first to buy SS.

Of course it will be Klean, as she has money spilling out of her pockets. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Is this a thread about porterhouses and what jchung wants for dinner, Klean being a rich girl in a castle or about GRAW/GRSS?

You've seen the last of the OGR formula I think. It was bound to happen but games are like cars and everyone copies everyone else to gain fans and consumers. GR will undoubtedly morph beyond the original game in order to gain a larger fan base. Enjoy it now while you can.

No multiple squads or character switching?

No true GR experince.

jchung

@Le Tigre

Yeah, I know, but then that means GRAW is not a true GR experience either, and if that is the case, the whole GR line is now dead.

I'm trying to be positive here. Trying.

BTW, I agree with your sentiment 100%.

I went and bought Summit Strike yesterday. It's is a lot more like OGR than GR2 was. I actually got into SS and want to keep playing it. I touched GR2, maybe, 5 times at the most since I got it.

The old GR experience is long gone my friends. It's become a new beast and it'll continue to evolve until it's unplayable amongst the OGR fans.

Character switching...gone forever. Multiple squads...most likely gone forever.

Those days are finished I'm sad to say. We can either evolve with the game or not. THANKFULLY GRSS is much better than GR2. If it weren't, I'd probably have no faith left.

Klean's agreement to let us know how GR3 is reminds me of a lesson I learned from my Grandfather as a teenager about deer: a buck will often remain just inside the tree line as the doe crosses a clearing or road.
