View Full Version : Canada Signs $3.4 Billion Deal With Boeing

We've just signed a deal with Boeing to buy 4 C-17 Globemasters (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/ubb.x?a=frm&s=400102&f=857101043) for the transport needs of the Canadian Armed Forces, worth $3.4 billion! Up to now we have been contracting our heavy lift needs to other countries. Our gov't feels the time has come to have our own intrinsic lift capacity; future missions may be controversial and we don't want another power able to veto one of our missions.

I'm curious to know what heavy lift assets are used by countries like Britain or Germany. Forum aviation buffs?

Well, the Luftwaffe is -->STILL<-- waiting for the Airbus A-400M http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

You surely know what was/is going on at Airbus over the last months.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

New shedule of delivery is 2010 and 60 planes have been ordered by the Luftwaffe so far (6 billion euros http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif )

The UK has ordered 25, Belgium and Luxembourg 8, Spain 27, France 50 and Turkey 10

Until then we use the aging C-130 Transall for small equipment and hire a private russian company with Antonovs for the heavy stuff http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blush.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

the UK current uses several (4?) C-17's leased from the Boeing. Originally these were going to be used as stop-gap solutions till Airbus' A-400 was built. Though I believe the RAF is going to buy a couple more C-17s.

The Aussies have bought 3 C-17s with an option for a forth at some point in the future; they took delivery of their first one back in November of '06.

I just read that the Luftwaffe is considering to lease and maybe later buy four C-17 Globemasters as interim solution until 2010. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

It seems that the russian company can barely satisfy the huge amount of orderings by its costumers ("The rubel seems to be rolling for them at the moment" like we germans say) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The Luftwaffe fears that the Antonovs might not be avaible when they need them like in 2004 during the tsunami catastrophy.

Slightly OT: Speaking of Russians, anyone know if they're still hiring out the Antonov AN-225? That's the big six engine monster that looks kinda like an AN-124, or C-5 Galaxy.

I was miss the familiar drone of the C-130 Hercules but, from what I hear, those things cost a wallop to maintain and repair.

I thought the UK were going to stick with their Globemasters and even buy a few more

Not to worry 3.JG51, Stephen Harper has also decided to buy several C-130Js to replace the extremely old versions which are flying now.
One thing confuses me about this C-4 deal though. We're spending 3.4 billion to get 4 aircraft from Boeing, yet Germany is paying 6 billion euros for 60 airbuses? What happened there?

Did any of you Canadians read a story in the newspaper yesterday about all the other big plans about to be implemented in the CF. 30,000 more troops, more bases throughout the nation, enhanced military presence in all major cities, and I think an additional $25 billion increase in over all spending over the next 20 years.
Finally the CF is getting some well deserved attention!

Correction : The 60 A-400M will cost 7.65 billion euros.

I did an advanced internet search for the A-400M and this is what came up:

va·por·ware [vey-per-wair] –noun- Computer Slang. a product, esp. software, that is promoted or marketed while it is still in development and that may never be produced.

That was a scene from the movie, "Lord of War." It was about a Russian [or Ukrainian?] guy whose family moves to the US and he becomes an international arms smuggler. That plane in the picture was carrying some of his illegal weapons and landed near some African village to avoid capture. They opened the plane up and gave away all of their "inventory" before the authorities could arrive and arrest him for illegal arms dealing. A good film to see if you are looking for something to rent.

I just found that pic.

We've hired one of them to carry equipment to Afghanistan. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
