Hello,
I have the same problem and no one seems to know what is wrong.
I install the program, the check up sais its okay to go. I start up the game, it starts to run but when I get to the point to play the game just "pops" out. Re-installing doesn't help.
Now I started back on Settlers 3.

perhaps try to update also the drivers from your graphics card. Also direct X last version needs to be installed.

I have the latest version of DirectX. I tried it with Intel Indeo video codec (latest version) but still nothing. I think I will wait untill my boyfriend gets here. He is a system manager. Maybe he knows someting. If he has a soltion I wil post it.

Hallo all,

This program SHoK comes with a "check system requirement". Basically it allows you to preview your CPU and to ensure that your CPU meets the requiremnts. To do this go to:

Start/All Programs/Ubisoft/Blue Byte/The Settlers - Heritage of Kings/Check system requirements

Browse through at the same time checking that you have green ticks on the right hand side. This is your indicator it will advise you if your CPU does not comply. If you find a non compliant issue then you know exactly what issue requires attendance.

If the problem still persists even after meeting the system requirements, at least you have eliminated potential issues.

The problem is then a program failure, I have written a text to the following topic headed:

"Game causeing computer to lock up" it suggests a number of steps that you can take that may overcome your the issues.

Please let me know how you get on, if possible and the problem still persist's try and be specific so that I may be able to provide a more definitive and logic approach to resolving the problems.

Regards

Sonny

my system has all the little green ticks on the systm cheaks, all my drivers are up to date,i even just put a brand new cd drive in in case mine was so old it did't enven register anymore ha ha. but no go,i thing i did notice was the settlershok.exe is running in my task manager even though theres nothing on my screen don't know if that means anything,i have to say i play a lot games i have never had to update anything to get a game to run before,i mean a tweak here and there yes but never a game that simply wont run
thanks//// just wanted to add i,m pretty sure the game is not updateing when i run patch 1.05
it run's and then pop's out before it finishes
i'm sure it should say something like "game updated sucsessfully" or "update complete"
i think, thanks again for any help

Hi Dave,

Tell me, do you have any Anti Virus and or other PC CD Games operating on the same CPU Unit/System Box.

If so can you tell me what they are?.

Wait to hear back from you.

Cheers

hi sonny
no i have tried this game with all anti virus /and spyware removers not just swtich off but removed from the computer, ive tried runing it with no other prgrams running at all, from what i can gather it seems to be the dvd/cdrw combo's the game has a problem with,as i said before i've played hundreds of games/ i can e
ven get games to run that my system should'ent play ,i simply belive this game was not tested properly before release,i also think ubi soft have done themselves a lot of damage if you read the huge amount of complaints on the forums.anyway thanks for takeing the timeto try and help i think it's time to bin this one
dave.

Just looked at your dxdiag it could be a chinese menu in reality,as I dont understand much about it,all I can say from looking at it is,your spec is almost identical to mine apart from Im using a P4.

I cant help thinking that your graphics card is the problem, along with many others having this problem, why do I say this???

I had the same graphics card as you until recently,I bought World Of Warcraft and all was fine for a short while, then suddenly for no reason my game would freeze,I couldnt tab/alt out, nothing, the only way was to press reset, this I could do maybe 20 times a day,and not something I like to do.My graphics card was well within the spec stated on the box so this problem had me well and truly baffled, this went on for days,I knew guys playing with the self and same graphics card as me and they had no trouble.

One night just before I hit the reset for the umpteenth time this particular night I actually got a Microsoft error on my screen,it mentioned graphics card, wow a break through at last, but of course I was in the midst of a reset so lost what it said.Once back up and running I searched through my windows folders for some hints,I came across a file called Logfiles in windows, inside is another file called Watchdog, there lay my problem:

// The driver for the display device got stuck in an infinite loop. This
// usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device
// driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your
// display device vendor for any driver updates

DeviceDescription: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

I had a few of the files in there all saying the same.I upgraded my graphics card to the series FX6 and have had no more problems since.

Im thinking that that particular graphics card just isnt good enough to run HOK,yes I know it falls within the requirements, but mine also did with WoW.

I would be interested if you looked in that folder Watchdog and see if theres anything in there on your pc,it took a long time of getting the freeze up before I got the actual message.

Just a thought, but maybe the cause of so many problems players are having with HOK.

hi
thanks for the post,
i can't seem to find any folder called watchdog
but anyway i really think it's unlikely,i mean i played half-life 2 and as you could see from my dxdiad i was well under specs but the game played no problem,in fact i haven't ever came across agame i could not play "ever", 20 years of playing never ever had a game that would not play,i'd say it again but i think you get the point, [could it be a record]ha ha
but getting back to the point i don't know if the game would freeze because it's never started ????????,i don't even know if there is a game that requires 256 mb of ram like i have on my card, but as posted its going in the bin ubi soft will never have the chance to take my money again.
thanks again for the post
dave.
