Hello everybody. I have had this game for well over a year now, but I am new to this forum and Far Cry fora in general. I have read a lot here in the last days though because I reinstalled Farcry with the 1.32 patch and newer graphics card drivers and I wanted to read about other peoples experience with the game. Now I can play with all settings at their highest, even though not with a constistantly good frame rate, but I just love the looks of the game when everything is at highest. FarCry is still the best computer game I ever played. I have some remarks and some questions. I am sorry if I am bringing up issues that have already been answered or resolved. I don't know where to start, so I will just start with no specific order in mind. First of all I don't understand in any way how so many people are complaining about the Trigens. I think I would not like this game half as much as I do if there were none in the game. There is nothing like the adrenaline rush and the heart beats you get when you are somewhere in the dark without CryVision or Cryvision batteries empty and you hear them growl somewhere next to you, knowing that you will lose all the time you played since the last checkpoint if they get you now. Now, speaking of Trigens, am I correct when I count 6 different species of Trigens that you can fight in the game with at least one more that you don't get to fight ever? I count two "**** mutant monkeys, let's take 'em out", the ones with a more human or ape like face and the ones with a very elongated face; two "jumper" Trigens species, one of them with a sort of cloaking device, two fat boy kinds, the ones with and the ones without rocket launcher. And then there's the species that you only see in a lab (Bunker I believe) and in the cutscene that leads to the Dam level. What I never understood is why the Trigens rebel...since Doyle later on says the Trigens were "fiercely loyal to Krieger" and also at one point that Krieger "controls them with implants". Okay, some Trigens are supposed to be "untrained", but then where are all the "trained ones"? The only time I saw Trigens that might be "trained ones" is in the archives level at the dock area, where you see a lot of Elite Mercs and two Fat Boys, that don't seem to be fighting each other, but those Fat Boys don't seem to want to attack me either. - Does everybody know that there are two rocket launchers in the River level that are "out of reach" but can be obtained with some climbing and hiking? No need to disable any kill lines either. But what about the rocket launcher Merc in the Pier level in the Merc camp? He is up there on the metal tower and you can shoot him or blow him up along with the armory, but I am never able to find his rocket launcher. Can it be found/picked up at all? I think there are other Mercs/Trigens that don't seem to drop their weapons as they should. Another example is at least one of the Jumper Trigens in the Dam Level when you are at the helicopter. I think there are even two that shoot at you, while you are in the helicopter using the mini gun, but when you get to where they fell, no weapon of them can be found. Is that a bug, and if yes, how come it has not been fixed in any of the patches, since it seems to be such an obvious, even though not extremely important, bug. I think that's all for now. I am looking forward to read some replies and might have some more questions/comments in the future.

Interesting I never thought to count how many different monsters there were.{trigens}
But I agree the game would be pretty bland without the trigens, the mercs are too easy to kill.
also good question about the trigens rebeling, would have been better to say that krieger sicked the trigens on jack carver.and the mercs just got in the way.
as for the patches, I think they were mostly intended for the multiplayer portion of game.

Thank you for the reply slayer.
Sorry to all for the lack of paragraphcs in my post above, I first typed it into editor and later forgot to add paragraphs. I checked on the Fat Boys in the Archives level and I was mistaken, the Mercs do shoot at them, but it's still odd, since I clearly remember taking at least one of the Fat Boys out myself in earlier games, and that long after the Mercs and the Fat Boys were activated. Maybe it's that they ignore the Fat Boys as soon as they see me/Carver.

The tower shooter is spawned, as is many mercs in the game. He dies in the explosion. There will be many instances of mercs and mutants not fighting, as the fights are scripted and triggered by your movements. When players like us circumvent the intented path, these triggers may not fire. There are many many climbs, like the one you described in RIVER. Factory, for example, can be totally circumvented with no shots fired. You can assault the FORT with a smoke grenade and go right into PIER. Lots to do, after playing the game "straight up". There are many types of mercs too. Several classes, uniforms, weapons carried, jobs, etc. Open the editor and look at the "entities" and you'll find the different classes of mercs, along with the different mutants.
Lots to do and see.

Thanks Cpt. I think I will be busy with FarCry for a long time to come, I realized it was a great game, but uninstalled it after winning on realistic a year ago. Now I am learning it is even better than I had thought.

Got another question. I read somewhere about a pig coming to repark your buggy in certain instances. I wasn't sure this wasn't just a hoax but tried it anyway. I parked the buggy on the second level of the stairs in the Fort level (the stairs with all the oil drums, explosives above). I watched for maybe a minute or so and nothing happened. So I thought "Yea, very funny, thanks for wasting my time." and went somewhere else on the island. But after I finished my business there I thought I would go back one more time to check and indeed the buggy was not where I left it anymore. It was on the stairs, stuck on a rock, and a pig at the bottom of the stairs. Made me smile, but I wanted to observe the pig driving so I reparked it again up there an watched for maybe 5 minutes but nothing happened, the pig just wandered around aimlessly. It just got too boring so I went on. Question: Does the pig do this only once, so if I want to observe it, I have to restart from last save point? Can it be observed at all or does it only do it when no-one is watching?

I too was in disbelief of this until I witness it myself. It was in the same location you describe on Fort level. It does take quite some time for it to happen. I'm not sure what triggers it, but I made sure I lead the pig near the buggy initally (he is to the right of the stairs to start.) It didn't happen immediately, but about 10 mins later he jumped in right before my eyes. I was only about 20 feet away.
Anyway, just another comical thing left in by the boys at Crytek...

Has anyone ever made it through the whole game without ever dying? The furthest I ever made it was "Research" on "realistic". I died there to the last Merc alive in the cave because of low FPS and beeing overconfident for a minute...If I had not died there I think I could have probably made it to the Bunker and gotten through it. Where I think it gets really difficult is "Steam". Just the beginning though until you get CryVision. What I usually do is this: I snipe the two Mercs on the Zodiac that appear after a minute or so, and use the Zodiac to take care of the "mutant monkeys". Then I drive the Zodiac to the Merc Camp, but sometimes I die there because of the RL Merc. Maybe someone knows a better way. The first REAL difficult spot however I think is in the level following Steam, when those 10 Mercs or so are coming down this round walkway with the huge "ventilator" in the middle. I die a lot there but the best method I found was to stay back and shoot rockets whenever the door to that mentioned "ventilator room" opens.
How far have you made it?

I like the Steam level. I do the same, get the boat but I swim over that way behind the large rock wait for them to past and take them out on their way back. Then go to the river mouth and take care of those guys. Gather the ammo and back around to the large island across from the camp dock. Take out the RL with the sniper (and maybe a few others). Bombard the camp with the boat rockets. Then up to where the RL was and take out the minigun merc.
From there sometimes I run thru the camp and forward or I'll take the boat around up the river and takeout the RL merc by the hut and go that way. Depends on how I feel at the moment.
After those areas are clear it's a choice between; jeep up over the waterfall to the birds I view of the steam plant or jeep up the road through the merc road block. I generally take the road because I like that section http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.
So it's through the roadblock to the little hill where you can see the hut. Out with the RL and take out the jeep (and all or most of the mercs in the huts. Then tag as fast as possible all the mercs I can with the binocs and take care of the small squad of mercs that on the road. Then wait for the alarmed mercs to come investigate to take them out. Also as many as possible at the plant (M4 is good for that no need to waste sniper rounds).
Then on to the huts to pick ammo, armor and health. Scan the plant from there also and clean up as needed then off with the jeep to the chopper pad and take out the incoming chopper(sometimes it comes when I'm almost in front of the plant but most of the time it comes when I'm at the pad). Scan the plant again (there always a worker hiding someplace) and off the the doors to get the plans and that's it.
Fun stuff, but time consuming http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Thanks for the reply pakmanis. Now that's a helpful tactic...to go to the island to take out the RL Merc. I was aware there were islands out there, but somehow I never tried to go there for a good sniping spot. You can actually take the RL Merc out while you are crouched on the Zodiac, which is what I used to do most of the time, but it's difficult to aim and I would usually waste 5-10 rounds until I got him and sometimes I was not careful enough and he managed to hit me with a rocket.
The first time I ever played Steam I did not even know about the Zodiac and I just entered the jungle. That was probably the most exciting situation I ever experienced in a game. My gamma and brightness were too low back then and I could hardly see anything, just hear the Trigens growl and coming closer and closer...and then when you go that way you will meet a lot of Mercs in the jungle and you won't see them clearly until you are almost stepping on their toes.

How far have you made it?
Yep. On realistic, I make it all the way through every time
now. I've been through the game trying different tactics so
many times, that I know how to get through safely on every
level. I take lots of hits, but never fatal. I don't use too
many gimmicks either, but there are a couple places where climbs
really help. Mostly, I try to avoid and sneak and fire from a
distance. A few examples:
Training: one of the patrol boats is a real pain. Go down and
lay in a bush near the shore, and toss rocks. He will
fire rockets over you, but then he will drive up the
coast and get stuck on a sand bar. Then finish Training
in the jeep. The firepower is invincible.
Carrier: sneak out and pop one Merc, then run back and lean from
a doorway. They just stand outside, and never hit you. Never go
up top. After the cutscene with Vals driver license, go back
to outside door and toss rocks to lure the helicopter. Lean
out to blow it up. Watch health there. Jump off boat, and
shoot chains to release rubber boat. Go to rear of Carrier
and toss rocks, and all the Mercs up top will jump off back
of carrier. Idiots.
Fort: Go right and get patrol boat. It has rockets. Come back but don't
come in range of any other patrol boat. Use machine gun to clear
nearby Mercs .. best way is to go down to about where you spawned,
and all those Mercs will jump in the water and swim out. Go in
close and clear that area. Then go to end where you can see
Merc patrol boat and get with rocket to boat house .. plus Mercs.
Clear that area with rockets, and go in and get sniper rifle.
Then take patrol boat around to see fort. Use rockets to clear Mercs
by buggy on shore, and a bunch of Mercs at and near the Fort. If
you go far left near shore, you can hit Mercs near cave entrance.
Then take patrol boat all the way around to where you first got it.
Lay on the shore with the sniper rifle and you will get nearly all
the rest of them.
Rebellion: It is possible to climb around the battle and never fire a shot.
Pier: Inside the cave, a fast run and gun is the best way. Go right and
be accurate to get 4 Mercs. Come back and lean out, and the rest
come one at a time .. easy.
Treehouse: Again a fast run past the trigens and Mercs makes it a lot easier.
Run so that the Mercs in the first jeep can't see you. Keep going
straight to the platform by the bldg, and down the ladder to run
behind the bldg. Hide in bush, and wait for 2 Mercs up there to
come down and tangle with the monkeys. Run up to the bldg. Rest
is lean and grenades .. easy. After that you take the jeep around
to the fort where the bunker entrance is. If you pop the Merc
sniper, and then go back to the jeep and use rockets to take out
the tower at the other fort, then you can sneak above the Mercs
guarding the bridge. That is easy .. use rocks. THEN go back to
where you first got the sniper. Go closer in the bushes and toss
rocks over the wall. 4 Mercs will stand in plain site, and you
can clear the "bunker" fort before you go back to the rear fort
to get the explosives. Only one Merc up there, and no more Mercs
in the level. One helicopter .. rockets.
Catacombs: Heh! There's a climb that puts you above the Mercs. You can lure
every one of them into a group standing right below you. Grenades.

Awesome, johns1234...
The main problem I have on "realistic" are the "random headshots" that sometimes get me even though I am running. Well, that may be "realistic" but also frustrating. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I am open to "new tricks". The only thing I won't do are things that feel like cheating to me. For example to drive a vehicle to a spot where it will be useful later, but you could not know it will be useful there in the future.
Pier: Are you not confusing this level with "Research"? I can't think of any cave in Pier, but your description fits perfectly to "Research." This is a hell of a spot, this cave, if you have low FPS. With high FPS I agree it's probably best to run'n'gun. With low FPS the best tactic I found was to take out 1 or 2 Mercs from afar (just when you enter the actual "hall" or whatever you would call it. Then go back a little and go prone or crouch and wait for them go come around the corner, throwing grenades whenever plausible and if your health/armour is low go back to the beach or the hut where there are health packs/armour and then go back to the cave.

I only now started downloadable single maps and I took the first one on a list I've found: "AECanyon". It was nicely designed but I have a few quesions.
Was this one created by a "mere" fan or someone who has good connections to Crytek and/or Ubisoft? I am asking mainly because there are Jack Carver soundfiles played there I have never heard before. He says something when he finds the machete for example. And Doyle also says something new, though I am not sure it was the original Doyle voice or someone that imitated him.
I wanted to play on realistic so I typed the game_difficult command and set it to 5, then I remembered that I read that command takes 0 as easy and 1 as normal, so realistic should be 4, right? But the game accepts 5 and even 6, maybe higher, what does it do when it's on 5 or 6?
Somehow I think something went wrong there, because even though I set it to 4 once I realised 5 must be wrong, I found the AI much too easy. They would sometimes come from behind a tree crouched, aiming in my direction and they should have seen me but they did not shoot for what seemed seconds.
The text file that came with the map suggested to use the FC difficulty settings menu, load a map (which I take as load any level of a previously made campaign)and then go to the console to load the map you want to play. I hope that is not the only way to correctly set the difficulty because I get shadow errors whenever I load a campaign level after one has already been loaded before. In other words, when I play the campaign I have to reboot the computer after each level to avoid those shadow errors (they make normal shadows appear in a sort of grid form, as if a fence or something like that was casting the shadow when it's actually cast by a solid object).
This has never bothered me much so far. I don't have the latest graphics driver for my card (FX 5700) but a quite recent one, when I once tried the very latest the game would crash after starting up.
The same error appears when I try to load AECanyon after I already loaded a campaign level.
Can anyone give advice, especially on how to set difficulty levels for SP maps?

do it like this:
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/273109392/m/5091083763
AEon's method works, but that way is better. By the way, AEcanyon is not a difficult mission.
AEon is a 'mere' fan . . . and I wish he would come back! But, I am guessing those sound clips are somewhere in the FCDATA folder and were never used in-game.

Thanks a lot bjanga. I wonder why you would have to enter -devmode though. I though devmode was some kind of cheatmode, making you invulnerable or something like that.
bjanga
10-17-2005, 12:11 PM
Oh, man! I didnt even notice that! Try doing it withough the -DEVMODE parameter.
Greg_Gauntlet
10-17-2005, 01:55 PM
Works like a charm without -devmode bjanga!
Though to be totally honest, I haven't played through the map (ai2)yet, I started it up, checked game_difficultylevel and it showed =4 as I wanted. I put the game on hold to let you know. I hope I will be able to tell whether it is actually "realistic".
I did try to play through the map with the "conventional" method of loading a SP map earlier today, but I could not finish it. I got stuck when it told me to go to the top of the mountain after I killed the Mercs that arrived with a patrol boat and a chopper. The waypoint leads back to that bunker. If you know that map bjanga, do you know what might be wrong?

Greg, send me a PM if this does not help so we dont have to keep bumping this thread.
SPOILER
After you clear out the bunker, you have to nab a chopper and clear out reinforcements on your way down to the beach, where you are extracted.

Okay, I would, only now I have another issue that I would like people to read. But, in general, I thought it would be a better idea not to start a new thread each time I have a question, so moderators, is it okay, if I keep using this thread for questions and comments?
Thanks for the help with ai2. The objectives must have not triggered correctly last time I played. Great map, especially the start when you can really put that stealth skill to use.
As for the difficulty setting. It defenitely works because I got a headshot under circumstances which make me 99.9% sure this is "realistic".
As for the issue, I have mentioned this already actually, it's about the shadow errors. For some very weird reason these errors now occur also if I load the map with the shortcut, as we just discussed. Does anybody else have this problem, maybe also with a FX 5700 (Asus/Nvidia V9570 TD)? Any solutions? Now it IS bothering me. I have 1GB of RAM, and these errors also occured in the same way when I only had 512MB. I have a 2.8 P4 CPU and WXP Home SP1.

The Greg_Gauntlet thread, lol.
As long as you stay on topic, feel free to post in it.
AECanyon was one of the first SP maps to be released and it is a beta that was never quite finished. The AI is rudimentary and so it is not too difficult a map.
Why do you not have windows SP2? The service pack comes with DirectX 9.0c. Also your video drivers are important in avoiding graphical errors especially with low end Nvidia cards.
Greg_Gauntlet
10-18-2005, 06:29 AM
SP2: Mainly because of the bad press it got when it was released and a huge list that came out with "older" games and programs that won't run anymore with SP2 unless they were patched. I wanted to be able to install my older games still, even if there was no patch available, when I wanted and I saw no advantage in SP2.
Would the performance of FC on my PC be increased if I installed SP2? Any other advantages? Does DirectX 9.0c only work with SP2?
As for the shadow error. It has only occured once when using the shortcut to launch the game with a SP map. Maybe it was just one freak occurance or I simply forgot to reboot. So it's as always, it only occurs when I load a map after a map has already been loaded before. So I still have to reboot after each map, which I can live with.
By the way, I do not keep posting in this thread so that MY thread is always visible http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Oh and do you know a thread that is specifically made for people to post their screenshots? I think I have some funny and interesting ones. If I use the search function for "screenshots" I get of course a million threads.

10-18-2005, 06:54 AM
You can run DX9.0c without installing SP2.
Go ahead and start a new thread for screenshots. There are several already but they are buried at least 12 pages down. Put a warning in the title for 56k modem users
