View Full Version : laptop speakers pick up incoming cell call?

I noticed this on several occasions:
My cell phone is set to vibrate, my laptop (internal) speakers are set to mute through windows. I get a call on my cellphone (the phone is usually in my pocket), and I hear a faint dial tone coming out of my laptop speakers (you know the kind when you're making the call and someone is not picking up). When the cell phone stops receiving the call, the dial tones on the speakers stop as well. Anyone else notice this?

Not like that. But whenever I get a call or my phone sends or receives data, I hear this garbled sound. It gets really annoying because it does this to every speaker that it is near.

Yah, the interference from cell phone signals produce a pretty distinct noise through speakers. Even if your cell phone isn't close to the speaker itself, if it's close to a wire that leads to the speaker, it'll make that noise anyhow. It's not a dial tone though.

Yeah it's common for GSM phones to interfere with speakers like that. Nice little way to tell right before you're going to get a call.

It sucks when you work in a radio station and it interferes with all of the equipment. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I get that all the time. Sometimes a call is coming through other times nothing is happening....

Your phone "checks in" every 5 minutes or so, that's when nothing happens after the noise. You'll notice though, that when an actual call is coming through, the noise will be louder and more distinct.

It also happens when data is being transferred. I have a news ticker that gets updated quite often and it also happens when a text message is about to come in. I called AT&T and told them that it was interfering with my radio equipment, and they told me that they were working on patch that should fix it in a couple months. That was a year ago. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Whoever told you about that patch was probably a CSR that didn't know about the tech. I believe if you have a 3G headset live in an area with 3G coverage and can make all your calls in 3G mode you won't have that issue.

It was worse than a CSR, it was a salesperson. =X
