View Full Version : PC locks up 4 seconds into trk or game

I recently had to replace my mobo (with a lesser version). CPU got rma'd a month before.

I load the game ok but whether I play a track or try a quick mission, my pc locks up 4 seconds (or less) into the movie or just as I start flying. It requires a warm boot to get going again. This happens every time I try to either watch a trk (black death for example) or fly.

I thought maybe it was the machine but I am able to play Quake 4 (demo) even with this chip running under-clocked.

I'll post dxdiag and then answer any questions.

<span class="ev_code_RED">By the way, my chip is a 2600+ but I can only set it up 133/33 and 12.5x to come in around 1500 mhz. It should be 166/33 12.5x for around 2000 mhz. Can't resolve that problem either.
</span>

Although the bios has not been updated, it is more than capable of handling this chip. The mobo supports 333 fsb also.

It's not a heat problem (socket is 52o, case is 32o, no diode temp available)

I also read here about turning off the sound. Although I don't have a sound card (use onboard sound), I turned off the game sound. It still freezes every time.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Lock ups are often caused by overheating of RAM, CPU or video card, but 4 seconds of play should not be enough to over heat anything. Maybe it is a driver issue?

By the way, my chip is a 2600+ but I can only set it up 133/33 and 12.5x to come in around 1500 mhz. It should be 166/33 12.5x for around 2000 mhz. Can't resolve that problem either.

I think that should be your starting point, determine why your CPU cannot run @ it's factory default settings.

What make/model is the mobo.

What make/spec is your RAM and how is it made up?

Once your CPU and RAM are singing in harmony we can start to look at chipset drivers etc.

Got the cpu problem fixed. Found it it's a locked multiplier. I've now got it up to its 2600+ potential.

Game still locks up. First instance was a quick mission (me and one AI). As soon as the AI appears, the screen freezes. THen the monitor goes black (4-5 sec after the freeze). Requires warm boot.

I'll try to post some times/actions that cause it to lock up.

Temps are 50o-52o on the socket, no diode avail, case is 28o.

-A7V8X VIA KT400 chipset
-9800pro 128mb
-2x512mb pc2700 ram (not dual channel as mobo does not support dual)
2600+

OK, now we can turn to the lock ups.

1. Make sure the fan on your 9800 is still working, also test that it turns freely when you PC is off.

2. Go to http://www.viaarena.com and get the hyperion 4-in1's chipset drivers (for some spooky reason my access to viaarena is blocked so I am unable to linke the drivers directly for you).

3. Lower sound hardware acceleration to standard, using the dxdiag tool.

4. Does the Catalyst CC show fastwrites enabled? If so I suggest a trip to the BIOS and disable AGP Fastwrites there.

I'll do that but post some info:

quick mission: screen goes black when AI was 3.5 km away

movie trk: freezes in black death at 18 sec

on my way

It is and it does

done

fastwrite was enabled. Catalyst CC allowed me to disable it but requires a reboot. When I went to doublecheck in bios that in fact it was disabled, it wasn't.

I disabled it in bios, finished the boot. Quick mission still freezes at 3.8 km in.

On my way to drivers site.

Is there a way to save the current set b4 applying the new one?

Or if one doesn't work out (as their help page suggests) an older version works better with some older boards.

1)You suggest the 4 in 1 set (as opposed to the "Pro" set). Rationale for that? The reason I ask is that from their website, the 4 in 1's:

are recommended for KT1##, KN1##, KM1##, KT2##, KT333, KN2##, KM2##, P4X2##, P4X3##, P4M2## which my board (KT400) doesn't seem to fall into.

2)Do I have to un-install current drivers b4 applying the new ones?

I think you can & should use the Hyperion Pro drivers for your board. I don't think you need to uninstall - but just follow the instructions that accompany the package.

Good luck,

Hi Enk http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif No problem m8 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Voyager - "It's not a heat problem (socket is 52o, case is 32o"

That's very hot if it's an idle temperature, that 52oC. It's even a bit near the mark if it's the full-load reading, could you confirm that figure and how you got it?

I know some Bartons are different - but my unlocked 2800+(333) ran slightly clocked at 200x11 using DDR400 - 36-7oC Idle, and didn't exceed 49oC under full load. On air cooling.

If your idle temp IS around 50 then you probably need to clean your heatsink of dust, maybe reseat your CPU on a fresh bed of AS5, and check your case airflow. How many fans d'you have & so on?

It's idle temp using Mother Board Monitor.

It's all a fresh install using stock cooler. All is clean. Case fans: 2 80's in, 2 80's out.

Maybe it's miscalibrated? I'll try prime95 for 15 min and see what it goes to.

Yikes! i suggest you activate the MBM Interval/Syslog and monitor temps to a text file. The results can be found in a folder called Log in the main MBM folder, in Program Files.

See what it's running at during ordinary desktop - then the Quake demo - then start FB and let's know what it logs. Set the logging interval as tight as possible for the FB experiment. You might want to set your overheat alarm at 70oC as well.

Off to bed now, will check in a.m. But if you log it and the CPU is getting up in the sixties then you should think about reseating and checking whether the heatsink is correctly installed.

Night all,

ran prime 95 for 20 min (it got through 3 of the tests) went to 58o. Idle is 52o.

I'll set mbm for recording.

I ran quake for about 15 min--only went to 54o. Don't know how much luck I'll have with FB. It usually locks up on me 15-20 sec in.

gotta be doing something wrong with the log. I (thought) I set it up properly. Went into the Log folder in mbm but nothing there cept a blank notepad file.

As expected, FB froze about 40 seconds in (longer this time but still went to black screen).

After the reboot, the temp was 54o (couldn't have cooled off that much in the time).

A new/related development. I got an on screen error message (just after a reboot):

"graphics accelerator has stopped responding"

All went black then something about resetting and needing another reboot.

News to me. I googled it and some boards mentioned that the black screen (that I'm experiencing) is a heat-protection result in that the video card is/may be overheating.

Is there a way to measure the heat on the card?

This is way beyond me. Would resetting it help?

Drivers? If I use any more than CAT 5.12, the display slows down like its on drugs. Message screens fade in; I close them, they fade out (not quick but like in slomo). I use the ati cleaner when changing drivers.

After the reboot, the temp was 54o (couldn't have cooled off that much in the time).

Don't bet on it m8! During a reboot temperatures drop back very quickly because of the minimal CPU usage.

"This is way beyond me."

Not really - just a bit of patient troubleshooting should catch it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I suggest starting by checking that you have MBM5 stored somewhere (as a .exe) or by downloading a fresh version from majorgeeks.com. Then uninstall your current version. Install the new version and run the config wizard. That will take care of any problems regarding the incorrect CPU setting you mentioned in your first post.

On the Interval & SysLog page you need to check the first two boxes in the SysLog column - that's to 'enable' & use a txt file. Scroll down and set the

Ok.... scroll down and set the interval time to 5 seconds. Go on down to Maximum Interval entries and set it to 500.
Also, on the Basic page, check 'Start MBM 5 together with Windows'
Don't forget to hit Apply in the bottom left of the window.

Do a full shutdown of the rig and have a cup of your favourite beverage. Switch it on again. As above, you have 2,500 seconds of logtime to use. Plenty. I try to keep some idea of elapsed time from boot up, as a guide for when I check the log.

Basically you can test away with whatever progs you want - but what we're most keen on is seeing is what happens to the CPU temp as you start FB and until it crashes.

I see the pointer towards the vidcard error - but lets try sorting the CPU temp first. If it's overheating enough to cause instability, then any other adjustments to gfx or memory will be useless.

After the crash & restart, go check the log. The most recent temps are at the top - down the page = back in time.

I'll look in a bit later.

What voltages have you set in BIOS for CPU. RAM and AGP?

I too thought 52 was full load, is MBM reading correctly? Did you get a profile to match your mobo?

What make/model is the mobo?

CPU idle temp is 52C? DAYUMN!!!! My 3500+ idles at 35 to 37C with the stock cooler and fan. 52C is as hot as mine gets under long term, full load.

My video card is a NV6800 Ultra PCIe, it idles around 55C with 73C being it's hottest, long term, full load temp.

I think you may have some serious heat issues.

Hello voyager..

Here's a simple way to check the basic temp at the CPU socket. Look in BIOS when you boot up. Navigate to the heading marked , er, PC Health I think it's called. You will see info about the CPU & system temps and fan speeds. What is the CPU showing in there?

Your system temp looks fine btw: 25 - 35 oC is normal. I'm still thinking either the heatsink is incorrectly installed or the heatsink fan is failing. The former being the most likely, imo.

No offence - but you built this yourself? I once installed a heatsink 180o out of alignment without noticing. The HS doesn't fit quite flush to the processor and an overheat is the result. In my case the computer played the siren beeps and wouldn't POST.

However, recently I had an ill-fitting water-block on my vidcard GPU. It would run Windows just fine, and even completed most of an Aquamark benchie - but crashed out of FB within seconds reading 127oC!! Remedial work brought it back to 33 Idle, 57 absolute maxxxx http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I love my water-cooling http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif

Anyway, pardon my crowing http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Pull the logs and the BIOS temps and let's see?
What kind of thermal paste did you use btw?

Finally, would you be prepared to spend out on one of these? http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=41

Probably the best option for air-cooling a graphics card, cheap & functional. I ran a Zalman, big copper flower/fan thing on my 9700Pro - but the Arctic Cooling solution is far more efficient. You'll need to buy some 'ramsinks' to cool the gfx-card memory - something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835119061

I think if the heat issue gets resolved then you can expect reasonable performance from your rig. Extra cooling on the Radeon could help you to soldier on in Perfect mode, or have an easy time in Excellent. I found the 9700 was struggling from around 4.02 onwards, perfect-wise, so I upgraded.

Good luck m8

voltages are:

agp auto
dram auto

board info is found at beginning of this thread (pics included).

I should mention as soon as I booted up today and when mbm started, temps were 36 socket 24 case. Five min later (after this reboot to start mbm logging, it was 50/28 (its a cooler day today).

A profile to match mobo? Don't know about this one. Could you re-phrase. I understand what a profile is (like setting one up for a joystick) but for a mobo?

Don't know about this logging. Followed your instructions. Rebooted about 3 minutes after applying them. The log that exists is the blank one that got created last night when I tried the first time.

Puzzle. I'll download a fresh copy and try again.

The builder has 20+yr building. Absolute faith in him. AS5 was used.

Other points: dive into bios and we see:

mb temp 28o
cpu temp 60o (don't know which one to believe now--mbm is still showing no higher than 50--edit-->50 is socket, 60 is diode http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif )
cpu fan 3708
psu 1950
qfan is disabled

additionally:

v cor 1.68v
3.3 rail is 3.20
5.0 rail is 4.86
12.0 rail is 12.23

I'll reinstall mbm now.

ciao

OK. New mbm installed (3x cuz for whatever reason the driver wouldn't load).

Anyways, now I have all three temps (as it should) but the news ain't good:

57 diode, 50 socket, 28 case.

Gonna shut down now and then boot and play FB.

Your faith in your builder is admirable. But, he is still human!

You obviosly have a heat problem with your cpu. When you are in your bios or idle it should not be above 44c IMHO. Mine idles between 30-35c depending on ambient temp in house.

Call your builder and tell him your temps and I am sure he will agree.

***Edit: Just noticed you are using a Barton. I adjusted idle max up a little. But keep in mind that Bartons will become unstable around 55c.

cpu temp 60o (don't know which one to believe now--mbm is still showing no higher than 50)

Either way - you have an overheating CPU http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif 50 or 60....something is wrong.

Note: although AMD state 85oC as the upper temp limit (pre-meltdown?) I think you'll find most users would set 60-65 as the edge of stability. As suggested previously, 52o could be considered reasonable for a full-load temperature but about 15o too high for Idle.

Sensibly you should consider shutting the rig down before you start losing data. At least you should avoid running CPU intensive programs until the fault is sorted. Load MBM and check that logging works, log one attempt at FB to show what's happening, and then get it looked at.

Mistakes can and do happen. I would take this situation back to your builder and I'm sure he'll be more than keen to set it right.

Sorry, and please await other opinions.

This log is for Quake 4. Played about 7-8 min with NO freeze. Temps are the same. How do you interpret this difference?? The game playing interval from 4:55 to 4:59 is just as high as FB was.

I can't explain it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I still suspect an overheating problem with the cpu, based on the figures - but I really wish there was a sensor on the 9800!

Ya, itza puzzle.

For interests sake, I ran memtest through 2 cycles (about 2 hr) with no errors.

I'll try prime again for longer than 15 min. It may very well be the card. All three are out of warranty.

edit-->no point. I started prime and it popped up to a steady 64 about 30 seconds into the initial test sequence.

Shut it down. I'll look into re-setting hs.

Thanks for all the time you've put into this. When I re-seat, I'll post again.

Sorry, over looked mobo info on first page, having reviewed it I see your mobo is supported natively by MBM no need for a 'profile' (this is where you configure it for the sensors if not supported 'natively').

Sounds like either the CPU heatsink is incorrectly mounted or case fan(s) flow reversed.

Confirm lower fan(s) sucking in and upper fan(s) blowing out remove and reverse if required.

I agree Enk - and I did wonder about the fans' direction(s) and also whether the CPU HS fan might be blowing instead of sucking?

I would expect a Barton to idle at around 40o with a stock heatsink, hopefully less. Anything over 52o at full load would be worrying to me. I agree with the 55o stability line mentioned.

The part I can't fathom is why the case temps are so normal when everything else is so hot. That doesn't help the case fans theory http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Lower 2 case fans are sucking into case, upper two rear fans are blowing out of case, cpu fan sucking into die, psu fan blowing out.

A thought was that general air flow is blocked within the case itself but case temps would be higher than a consistent 28o if that were true.

Seeing as it only locked up with FB (and not quake demo), is it possible that the game settings themselves are causing the problem? I ran FB with lowest all-round possible settings, still froze a dozen seconds into the game/movie trk.

Prior to this mobo, I used a 9700 pro with an a7n8x deluxe board running excellent setting throughout with great results.

With this lesser board and the 9800, for video settings, I'm using coasties figures in the "custom" selection rather than the all encompassing 9700/9800/etc choice.

Okay. The difference between Quake 4 and FB is that Quake runs on DirectX and FB on Open GL. So there is some reason to expect that settings play a part. I'll come back to that.

Firstly though, lets go back to the temperature reading in BIOS for the CPU. Your words:

"cpu temp 60o (don't know which one to believe now--mbm is still showing no higher than 50)"

Unless there is something far wrong with the motherboards temp-sensing abilities - this is a bad temperature and needs fixing first. Like you, I'm hoping someone will come along and say "turn off 'X'", but I can't ignore the temps logged.

Maybe because DirectX is native to Windows it can resist the effects of overheat instability longer than FB's OpenGL?

I tried to correct that report: the 50 referred to the socket temp (MBM5 wasn't working correctly at that time. I was (incorrectly) comparing the diode (bios) to the socket (MBM).

Both the bios and mbm agree on the diode temp now (at idle, consistently 57-58o).

When playing an FB trk movie, is the cpu working just as hard as when I'm actually "flying" (remember, setup freezes just as easily in either operation)?

I thought it was just a movie and used little to no cpu resources.

What country are you in V?

How to do that btw. You may want to check the Quake, before you shut it down and get it looked at.

Give it the 3-finger salute to bring up task manager. Hit the tab you want to see, e.g. Performance.

Leave TM on the desktop, not minimised, and open the game. TM remains superimposed on top. You can't now use the cursor on TM, but you can use it in the game screen.

The screenie above shows the line rushing up the graph from idle as the game initialises - and it stays up there till you close the game! I dunno about Quake, as I said.

To lose the TM window, hit Ctrl Alt Del again. The game minimises and you have access to TM with the cursor. Close it, maximise game again and then carry on. (I guess you could close the game first and then deal with TM if the game doesn't minimise on your rig.)

I did the screenie the easy way. Ctrl & PrintScreen. Open Accessories/Paint then Edit/Paste. I used Photobucket to host.

I thought the info might be useful, excuse me if you already know http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Bedtime again. I'll check in tomorrow.

Cheers,

B.

I have always had my cpu usage to 100% after the sim cranks up. I don't think this is abnormal. Been this way with Intel and AMD over the last 3 yrs.

For the record, my understanding is that a track (trk or ntrk) is effectively a record of instructions that replay actions using the full weight of the sim engine.

In other words a track will tax system hardware just as much as actually flying the mission at the time it was recorded.

This is why we use tracks, such as The Black Death, as a benchmarking tool to evaluate tweaks.

Your CPU is definately over heating, FB will be so much more susceptible to that than Quake.

I gather that you have yet to reseat the CPU heatsink, I would make that my priority and endeavour to get idle temps down. I have a Barton 2500+ OC'd to 3200+ with 0.25 volt increase and it runs @56 tops under load. Been like that for around two years now http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Correct. Not done anything to the hs. I'm going to get an aftermarkert hs and go that. At $35 it's cheap and hopefully should do the job.

Thanks again for all your help. Don't spend anymore time on my problem till I come back with news about the new hs (volcano 12).

Ok, but I have found (as have some review sites) that the stock AMD fan and heatsink are pretty good items and usually quite adequate unless you start overclocking. I'm thinking there is something wrong, like poor or no contact of the heatsink to the CPU or the fan is not running.

Well, I know my previous stock fan on the 2400 ran hotter than what I've read here for other 2400's.

I acknowledge what you say but can only speak from my own experience.

Thanks again.

Got an update. Temps are still in the hi 50's for me so I got a TT Volcano 12. Man this thing is big. Not installed yet (this weekend) BUT I finally got the game to run.

Everything I've always read is to run it in OGL. Well, for whatever reason I changed it to directX and guess what: it runs great now. No lockups. Temps still hi but that will be fixed shortly.

I do run the cat 6.4's. I even went so far as to try the omega version. But directx is working for me.

I've read elsewhere here that opengl requires the card's drivers (which I used). It made no difference. Lock up in ogl but not with directx.

Anyways, that's my update so far.

Running it in DirectX often gives higher frame rates and better performance with less heating since the video card, and maybe the CPU as well, do not have to work as hard. The trade off is in image quality. All those nice reflections on the water and the "liquid" texture cannot be rendered in DirectX.

Update: got the volcano 12 installed. Idle temps are 49-50o now. Go into the game (offline) with 3 per side temps are 51o consistent.

Still can only run in directx so I assume there is/are driver issues (regardless of the fact that I'm using 6.4's.

I'll get ahold of driver cleaner and uninstall vid drivers and start over.

Thanks for your help folks.
