Finally, I can call it done, with the exception of an aftermarket cpu cooler so I can oc further than I have. I had tried to use a 500 watt PSU that came with this MGE Viper gaming case. BIG MISTAKE! Nothing takes the place of a quality PSU. As a result, it held me up for a week before I was able to install my XTPE. Thanks goes to LB and Joe at Magnum-PC, both of whom have made themselves available for my novice questions. Anyway, please take a look and see if all looks well.

I'm trying to save up for a 939 system so the more info ya can kick out the better.

He's using a MSI board due to his having an AGP slot needed for his video card. he's got some good quality RAM (I ferget which type exactly) all running in some cheap and gawdy looking mid-tower case that has a 120mm fan in a somewhat smaller side fan in and a 120mm fan out the bakc of the case. He;s air cooling and this just is more evidence to show that if you wanna clock the thing that high and yes, he's quite stable at that speed, you need a great power supply, not a good one. Once again, here's the power supply I sent him...

Thanks m8! I went with the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and Corsair TwinX 1024-4400C25PT DDR550. So far no stability problems whatsoever. I have already oc'd the FSB to 240MHz @ 10X multiplier for a speed of 2400. Being the novice I am, I left the ram timings on auto and at these settings, it is running at 2.5-4-4-8. I have Joe at Magnum-PC looking to find the best cpu cooler out there before I go any further. It can handle 250MHz without raising the cpu voltage. But anything over this, I will need to up the cpu voltage and I need a better cpu cooler than what came in the retail cpu box. Once I get the cooler installed and find the oc limits, I will see where the ram timings are running at auto and tighten them up from there with a program called A64 Tweak which allows one to tighten ram timings through Windows. That way if I take it to far and get a system freeze, I can just reboot and the computer will revert back to the bios settings. Man, this is fun! Being stuck on that Dell for two years, taking it as far as it would go in upgrades and not being able to oc the cpu was a pain. I have been FREED! Lol

I am installing the sim today when I get home. I will post BD numbers when I run it.

Cheap and Gowdy is in the eye of the beholder. Imo, it's a beautiful, well ventilated case from MGE. It's called the Viper. Two 120mm front and back. An 80mm on it's side and an 80mm top exhaust. I liked the case LB wanted me to get, but I thought I would save the $50 extra and put it elsewhere. I tried to use the MGE 500watt PSU that came with the case. I read four reviews that gave it great marks. But all it was to me was a POS. But the case is a good one. HEHE With the help of a friend, I was able to install an OCZ 520watt Powerstream yesterday. It's one awesome PSU. The way it is laid out with its' wiring, it's probably the best on the market.

Quazi, do me a favor and post a link to that b()tt ugly case you purchased in the Genral forum and make a poll so people can vote on just how ugly it really is! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

However, with those extra fans in it, I bet it cools nicely. Just goes to show that even if it is b()tt ugly, it's still beautifull! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hey, steve v! You can congradulate yourself a bit here as well. I din't tell him anything you and other truly smart people didn't teach me in the first place. In fact, the whole forum should take a bow!

If this keeps up, Dell is going to have that Dude guy come out and plant some weed in your car, then call the Dekalb County Narco squad just to keep you from posting!

HEHEHE. Thanks for checking it out Steve_V. I can't believe I actually got it right the first time. I guess a couple of years of reading your post and those of the other gurus here paid off. HEHEHE Now, all I have to do is get over LB calling my case "ugly". http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif Eh, I'm a big boy. I just ran the BD track and got a Max=118 Avg=43 Min=8 This is with Perfect Landscape and all setting as high as they go in that particular window. Vertical Sync=Off and FastWrites=Enabled. AA=4, AF=8, and Water=2 Forest=3 in the Conf.ini file. This is an increase of 13fps over the maxed out Dell 4550 i was playing on. HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE Needless too say, I am very happy and satisfied with my first attempt and building a computer to game on. And those who think they can't do it would be surprised how easy it is. Especially when they have the support of the same m8's here as I did. If I would have had someone else build this, I'd about bet it would cost at least $3000, if not more. Counting the XT PE and Audigy 2 card I already had, I've got less than $1800 tied up in it.

Well, I tell you what Quazi, I really am your friend and want to prevent you from going blind from looking at that utt ugly case. So pack up that rig and send it to me... you know my address because, after all, what are friends for?! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Glad to hear it is all going smoothly for you.

Now post a link of your case.

Here is my new one!

Now, after seeing your new case, and finding out just how tight this mid-tower case is, I probably should have started with a full tower. That case is awesome Coastie. But it's never too late m8. That old Dell could use a better ventilated case. I may get a full tower in a couple of months. I have no camera to show a pic of this MGE Viper. But if you Google that, you will see the case I went with. Budget constraints. But it is well ventilated and will do for now. AWESOME case Coastie. Real neat inside m8. Now I know what I really need for this build. Really awesome m8.

Hey thanks man. I really like it too. The case is a thermaltake tsunami dreamer. It comes with or without window. 120mm fans front and rear and 92mm in the side.

It has nice features inside also. Like quick snap in optical drives, removable hard drive rack and snap in fans.

Your case is a cool looking case for that price man. The PSU is junk though. The 15a 3.3v rail is VERY low for todays standards and would likely cause problems.

I am 43 years old so the fancy stuff on your case was not what I was looking for. I was looking more for sexy rather than cool looking. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif You must be a bit younger!

Younger? HEHEHEHE I am 40 m8. Sad but true. My case just caught my eye and the price was right. Being new to the building a gaming rig, I went for looks over function. I guess it is a matter of tastes. I thought it would get the job done and my son really took a liking to it. I gave him and my daughter the Dell, and from the experience I have had in building this one, he will probably end up with this case holding his Dell. Mid-Towers are really tight inside. Looking at it empty, I thought there should be plenty of room. And there is, just barley though. That pic of your case has put me in the mind of purchasing a full tower as soon as I get this OCZ 520watt PSU paid for. I like the sound of being able to quickly interchange the optical drives as well as the other nice features. The Dell needs a better case any way. It has only the exhaust from the cpu and the exhaust from the psu. That's it. I find it kinda strange that a man of my age found my case to be asthetically pleasing. But I think I was influenced by my 15yr old boy. HEHEHE A little at least. HEHEHE

40, A mere spring chicken! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Believe it or not, Mine is considered a mid tower. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif But here is the thing, My previous was also a mid tower and it is MUCH smaller than this one. Like 3 inches shorter and over an inch less on the width and depth.

I don't know what the actual definition of a mid or full tower is, but there can obviously be a lot of difference in size.
