I have CM9k and a friend of mine has 7k, while another is about to buy 10. Can we play against one another or do we all have to be on the same version?

You gotta have the same version. Though you can get an upgrade to 10th edition from older chessmaster products.
This is what the FAQ says:
Q. I have a copy of Chessmaster 9000. Is there an upgrade option?
A. For a limited time, retail copies of Chessmaster 10th Edition will offer a $10 rebate (by mail) for previous owners of Chessmaster 9000, 8000, 7000, and 6000. See the box-front sticker at your local retailer for details.
So the best solution would most likely be to upgrade the 7000 and 9000 versions to the new Chessmaster 10th Edition and then play with each other using that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
