Picked this title up on Saturday, and had the tutorials knocked out over the weekend.

Started a career, 1942, Asiatic fleet out of Freemantle. Off to the South China seas.

Just NW of Australia I stumble across a sizable convoy with 2 large modern tankers, was given
a secondary assignment of taking them down. Did so, and wiped out the whole shebang, 3 destroyers,
and all. Low on torps and deck gun ammo, but got a check mark.

Avoided most contacts until I all but ran into another modern large tanker, so snapped off a
pair of torps in an ugly low vis storm. Both hit and drew out the escorts. Sank one of
those and used the last of my DG ammo to coup de grace the damaged tanker.

3 torps left, damaged, I avoided any contacts for the remaining 1500 miles of the 3500 mile
trip up.

Got to the area, and that was checked off, with a new mission of "sink merchants" in the
brief box. Came across a solo freighter and used 2 torps to dispatch it. Credited, but no
message of completion, even after sending a status report.

Do i need to make the long trip to Midway to get new torps and stuff, or is it needing at least
2 ships sunk for "merchants".

Did I mess up getting 65,000+ tons on the way?

Maybe a restart, and avoid altercations before my assigned patrol area?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you need to register 10,000 tons after receiving the mission. You could risk it and use the deck gun, but I believe 10,000 is the mark.

10 grand is the magic number?

That is good to know. i have no more deck gun ammo,
so my single, lonely torp may have to strike true!

Else I will have to schlep all the way to Midway.

Maybe I'll start from an earlier save or summat. At least now I have a mark to shoot for, and
try out. Cheers, Sapper...

10,000 tons it is Spectre.

Also, if you are given a mission to "Patrol area X" wherever that may be, you must stay within 100 nautical miles of the Patrol Icon map point, (Orange star with binoculars), for 48 hours.

Where'd you get to be so smort, ElAurans?

You must be one of them thar BlitzPigs or sumpin'. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Does it give you a "stay in patrol area" type of secondary mission? I know I have strayed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Maybe a new career, with all this newfound knowledge would be my best bet. When I get
home tonight, I may start anew...

SH4 (unlike SH3) does not count opportunistic sinking, on the way to a mission, as part of the main stated mission patrol.

When i first played SH4, i set out and plundered *anything that was carrying Japanese cargo* on the way to the stated patrol area -thinking, 'this is just the start of a good day'
When i got there, i think i sunk about 2 ships and left 3 burning and listing. (i had probably sunk 3-4 on the way) I still couldn't get the 'mission complete' to popup.
Then when i did, by rearming at a nearby base,(light coloured anchor) and going back, i was only credited with what i had sunk in the MAIN patrol.
All the shipping i had sunk prior to the main patrol was wiped off the slate.
This (for me) is a game killer. Being a submariner in WW2 was about opportunities. You had kills, you didn't have kills -such was life.
The idea of being treated like a 'Sub school kid', "you must not go home until you meet the correct tonnage target" is sooooo wrong http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

So is *Staying* in an area that you've just stirred up a hornets nest in!!
Secondary mission objective: "patrol the same zone you just sunk ships in and sink enemy merchants" Yeah that is soooo clever of top brass, "i have no torps?" you radio out. "Well get some more and get back in there"
So naturaly, shipping and escorts KNOW that your in the area and therefore targets are like hens teeth. It's just a mess the way the campaign works.
Patrol an area for 24/48hrs, that's a job. But so is sinking ANYTHING related to the war effort on the way to THE patrol!
Why do you think SH3 as still so HUGE? That reason above is why..

Well, you have to set down something tangible, I suppose.

What would be better? An automatic mission completion upon departing port? Some overall
tonnage in the 50, 75, or even 100,000 ton range?

As long as I know the parameters, and they are achievable, I am OK with it.

I ended up nuking my prior saves, chalking them up to training, and am gallivanting around the
Celebes Sea, looking for plunder. Now that I know the binoculars dealio, I drew a circle,
and will hang around in there...
