OK, I'm sailing down the the east coast of Honshu towards Tokyo Bay when radar pick up a single contact of to the southwest. The Drum alters course to intercept and about a half hour later we make visual contact. Battlestations is called and the Drum quietly slips down to periscope depth. Time is about 02:38. First good look through the periscope and I see this.

Now I've never seen a Japanese merchant flying two flags before. OK, range is at 1,300 yds, firing two bow tubes. Number one prematures halfway to target. Number two runs under the target. Fired tube three, torpedo runs down the track and prematures just before hitting the target. Fired tube four, torpedo runs down the track again hits the target just back from the bow.

Getting a closer look at the ship now, we had IDed the ship as a Medium Modern Composite Freighter, but doesn't look it should. What have we got here, everybody is guessing. The freighter had slowed to three knots. Tube five is fired. Watching through the periscope I see the the torpedo miss ahead. Tube six is fired, it heads toward the target and runs under with no explosions. We reverse course to bring the stern tubes to bear. Tube seven is fired a couple of minutes later and this torpedo hits with gratifying results.

The whole crew in the conning tower takes a quick look as the ship sinks. Sitting where the first ship had just gone down is a second ship, a Small Old Split Freighter. Where did it come from. After a quick setup, tube eight is fired. The torpedo runs down to the target and passes under again with no explosions. Tube nine is fired with depth set at 5 feet. Torpedo runs down the track and explodes against the target stopping it dead in the water.

Tube ten is fired, it runs hot straight and normal and starts the ship heading towards Davy Jones Locker.

It was only after I finished this patrol and looked at the screenshots that I figured out that the Small Old Split Freighter was sailing directly behind the Medium Modern Composite Freighter. But it sure looked like the small freighter was inside the medium freighter. Like I said, I gotta lay off that depth charge medicine. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

They were probably using a trick the learned from the Polish Merchant Marine. They lash two frieghters together so they can carry additional cargo in nets between them. It's called the Catamaranski.

Shame on you, Tambor. Breaking up couples like that.... But hey, at least now they lay in their graves beside each other for eternity...

Is that really true?? Cause it doesn't make much sense to do that. But catamaranski would be a good name for that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
