Hostage help

On my pc I am in the campaign at the Amsterdam level. The two hostages have been found. When I approach one, the command sign says 'secure hostage'. But whatever I do, like hitting the space bar, nothing happens. They keep on sitting with their hands in the neck. What to do? (Also, a couple of times now, the game simply crashes, which is very annoying.)
