HOK - How the heck do I get more wood?

I am soooo frustrated! I build a college so I can get a sawmill, I don't build homes or farms to save wood, then I wait to get more wood from the sawmills but I always, always run out of wood. Despite the woodcutters bringing wood back, the mills still say '0'. What do I do to get more wood? PLEASE HELP!!
