View Full Version : A weird event happening on STEAM level **Spoilers**

I was wondering if somebody else ever experienced the following.

When you begin the 'Steam' level, you have essentially two path options.

The first one is the jungle path, starting with the two trigens eating a dead merc near a camp fire all the way to the mercenary village with the CryVision googles.

The second path I use starts by swimming to the first small island in order to ambush and steal the closest patrol boat. I then proceed by slowly driving the boat to the river, destroying two other patrol boats, killing the mercs (including one sniper) stationed in the first small outpost on the right shore, killing some other mercs and trigens on the left shore, and finally assaulting all the mercs (including a sniper and a rocket merc) stationed in the second outpost at the end of the river.

From there, I then steal the hummer and take the road to the village with the googles. Just before getting at the village, I lure the mercs to come to me and kill most of them with the hummer machine gun. I then slowly proceed inside the village, kill all the remaining mercs there, steal the CryVision googles, kill the mercs at the pier without forgetting the nasty rocket launcher merc at the top of the hill.

Okay, now that's where I encounter that weird kind of 'twilight zone' event.

If I make this second path all the way to the village and then decide to proceed inside the jungle in order to kill everybody else all the way to the beach where I started the level, then I won't find any remaining merc. All I find is mercs weapons left on the jungle ground.

It's looking as if the game has somehow 'detected' that I've choosen the river path and decided to trigger the disappearance (or unspawn...) of all the jungle mercs, leaving all their weapons on the ground.

There may be a technical justification for doing it, like freeing some RAM memory for other tasks, but this way of doing it (letting all the weapons in place) gives some kind of freaking 'twilight zone - ghost jungle - area 51' feeling to the player wandering there..

Sorry, I realise that my post is very long...

So, in short:

1) Does everyone encounters this 'event' ?

2) If yes, is it the game that is done like that on intent, or is it some kind of bug ?

I'm patched to 1.32

Could it be that the 3 trigens that are nearby when you start the level killed all those mercs or do you kill those after you capture the patrol boat?

There would have to be an explanation on what killed those 3 trigens then because you probably would at least have heard them, looking around with the binocs, if they were still alive

I have never done the level like you desribe.

Weird stuff happens to me a lot in FarCry. Just the other day I was doing the first merc camp in training, getting the ammo and the M4 without killing anyone, as I usually do, but this time, while sneaking to the last hut with the M4 in it I hear a Merc go "Hey!" and then a "merc pain scream", but when I looked at the stealth meter it was blank. Later when I got to the binocs I looked back and saw that all mercs were alerted and sneaking around looking for something, except one was in the water standing still, pointing his weapon at something. I have no idea what happened since the only reason for a merc to give a "pain scream" other than beeing hit by a weapon (or fist, claw, vehicle) is when they fall down somewhere, but there isn't anywhere to fall down in that merc camp, at least not where the mercs usually are before they are alerted.

Oh, but I digress, sorry http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

You are raising a clever observation.

When I steal the first boat, I usually come back to the beach, lure the trigens to me and kill them with boat's machine gun. I kill only the trigens (not the jungle mercs) and go back to the river path.

I don't really need to kill the trigens but I nevertheless do... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

So you can be confident that the jungle mercs have not been killed by the trigens. Something else have made them disappear...

One easy experiment I will do is not killing the trigens and see if they disappear like the jungle mercs. Unfortunatly, I'll be away from my gaming computer for Christmas time, so if anybody is curious and is willing to experiment on this subject, then please feel free to report interresting results... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Perhaps you are activating a 'kill' trigger when you get a save moving up-river to the merc ambush spot.

Thats what I think and I personnally think it's too bad. I'd like to be allowed to attack the jungle mercs by coming from the village.

The level designers have probably decided:
okay, the player got the googles and his/her new objective is the regulator at the far end of the map, so let's kill all those jungle mercs since the player does not have to take their direction to finish the level...

That's a very small flaw that makes the game a little less 'free roaming paradise'... Fortunately, this 'scripted unspawning' looks like an exception rather than the rule...

Ya see..what happens, listening to the Mercs conversations, they hear the firing in the camp and go AWOL.. "I'm outta here". They drop their weapons, steal a boat and split to the main island to sip Mai Tai cocktails on the veranda.
I'm sure thats what the clever mapper decided to do. Brilliant! ;-)

I did the level as reggo described and indeed...they are all dead. And no, they don't just drop their weapons and desert their posts, unless they leave behind cloned copies of their bodies. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Their bodies were still warm when I found them. I have the body decay time on 999, though sometimes when I play stealthily I take so long they still decay before I leave the level.

Greg, thanks for confirming this event and for bringing the 'dead mercs' new information. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I also have corpse decay time set on 999, but I play so slowly that corpses are all gone by the time I get to the jungle... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I may eventually look in the editor if I can find and disable that 'triggered merc kill'.

Of course, I Jest!
The culprit is "KillTrigger03" When entering, you kill 8 mercs. It is located on the road, leaving the camp, just before you get to the sharp left and fallen log. To disable:
Open Sandbox and Steam map. You navigate by using mouse and arrow keys. If its too fast or too slow, look for the speed box under the map. Try 0.05 The Trigger is in the vicinity of X=1323; y=711 Click on the trigger and a box to the right will open. Look for "Entity properties" and the first box is Enable and checked Yes. Click on the check mark to unable. Save file. Then under file tab, select "Export to engine".

well me has been lurking about here since a very long time ago and was blown away by CptLongs` post with the sandbox coords right to the point...does he have any more of these...i`m sure you could really mod something seriously here...(really...this post made me re-install farcry after like about...how long...just to get to sandbox)...

There is a lot you can do quite easily. IE remove kill zones, make the kill choppers vulnerable or just go away, add subtract AI weapons, etc. I put a hang glider on the top of the volcano in DAM and glided for a very long time, over to some atols.
Then, of course you could od the .lua files and change just about everything, gravity, damage points, ranges, AI sight and hearing, your speed, the angle which you can climb, etc.
Any serious interest, let me know and I can give it a look.

In the level we are discussing, in the camp, in one of the huts.
