I snuck into Rabaul last night and had a large tanker, a medium one and a bunch of other goodies stationary and just waiting to die. I came to a stop and let loose with 6 torpedoes at different targets when I realized that I was over 4700 yards away. Not a one of my torpedos was an 8200 yarder so I listened to a chorus of "Torpedo missed, sir". Went to previously saved game and loaded it. This time I went straight there instead of checking out the other port so the large tanker and a few others weren't there.

Forgetting that early torpedoes had a 3.2km range, I kept wondering why my li'l S-Boat wasn't able to hit an onrushing head-on destroyer when 4.5km out.

If you set your torpedo to 'slow' speed, does this not roughly double the effective range?....but, you must consider that the 'fish' won't get to the atrget anywhere near as quickly....am I wrong in this assumption? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Mark XVIs had a range of 9,500 yds at approximately 30 knots and a range of 4,500 yds at 46 knots. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
That being said the dumbest thing I've ever done is when returning from patrol is forgetting to load a new set of torpedoes before going back out on patrol without any torpedoes. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Ha that sucks.
let me seeee...
the dumbest thing ive done,
i once plotted my course across from pearl to a port off china. When doing so i did not notice i was head straght for a peice of land about 50 yards wide. I was about to hit it so i took a sharp right and when i thought i was clear i hit another peice of land 30 yards to its right......... so i was beached and a little pissed. lol.

Cruis'n along on the surface, standard ahead, calm seas, clear weather, bright sun, RADAR on. I was below deck charting the next leg of our patrol, when suddenly gunfire? And strange, loud scraping sounds
I raced to the bridge just in time to see a subchaser careening off my starboard side. The subchaser soon sank from the collision, but he didn't do me any good at all.
All lookouts were summarily flogged.

haha I got out on my 2nd patrol and noticed I had no torpedos when I bumped into a convoy. Iwas most displeased http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif!

Yep fellas I've been the fella with no fish too.
It took me a long time at Submariners Anomymous to admit it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
But the dumbest....working my way into a big ol juicy task force and setting up a shot.......only to accidently hit the emergency surface key. It was a short career.

my dumbest act was a decision.. attacking two carriers of a photo recon... the torps hit my first sub net :P
not only that.. i got inside the net atomized the carriers only to go at full speed into the net.. ithen surfaced and was killed by shore batteries...

The dumbest thing I've ever done...
Get myself addicted to video games. I'd have a lot more of a life without them, and I'd have lot more money in my savings account.
There's a new 100k club in town and I'm not talking about tonnage here. I serious, I'm pretty sure I've spent over 100k on games and hardware in my lifetime so far. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Not looking at the map to know if I was in shallow waters and going 90 feet deep. Must have been the first sea mole ever...

Dumbest thing i've done? Just deleted all the mods in my mod folder without removing them first using JSGME. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
Result? Unable to remove certain mods, root folder snapshot now useless, had to re-install and re-patch everything to get back to normality again! AAARGH!!

LOL! I don't feel so bad now. BTW, I was on fairly high time compressions at periscope depth and decided to surface. Whoever put the D and S keys next to each other should be shot. I hit the D key and imploded in a heartbeat.

Watching an allied TF (the ONLY task force I've ever seen) I pressed the enter key.
I don't think it hit anything, but I didn't stick around to find out.

Since a picture is "worth a thousand words," I figured a picture would best show the dumbest thing I've ever done. I showed it in a discussion thread earlier, but it is imperative that it is viewed again so that one will always remember to check the map before upping the time compression.

So far I have learned from my mistakes. How about you?

Beaching, I guess, but then it wasn't really a stupid mistake, since it was more a sandbar than jmanwell's island... something I couldn't see when I plotted the course with the zoom out quite a ways.
Crunch, GRIND. "We're taking damage sir!". http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif [external view] Oh. Sigh... Time to see if we can get off this thing and go home.
As for REALLY stupid, well, I'll have to think about that one. There have been a few! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Well... my new dumbest one was finding a slow moving task force with 2 kongo's in it . I fired 2 fish at each, one under the smoke stack and one at the rudder. I managed to land 3 of the fish on it. They slowed down greatly, but I was getting pinged already from their escorts, so I said what the heck and flank speeded between the 2 battleships and came out on the otherside of htem with several of the destroyers getting stuck on the otherside... when a shot from I think one of the battleships shot at my periscope and missed, but hit my boat. the damage didn't look bad and I put a team on it. I thought I was safe with the destroyers stuck rammed into the battleships for the time being :P
anyway... got into position and fired my last 4 aft torpedos at the 2 battleships and they went down and then I dived hoping my ridiculously silly exploit would be successful.
but apparently that shot at my periscope damaged my hull greatly.. I imploded and died at only 100 feet :P
I enjoyed the nice guilt trip spinning view of the crew you just sent to the bottom effect that wasn't in SH3 though :P

Had a gung-ho attack on a small convoy explosively successful - sank both escorting destroyers with single shots each, mashed a tanker with another, blew the bows off another and left it burning. Surfaced to admire my handiwork and wreak havoc on the burning fuel carrier, smug from the hitting of four ships almost simultaneously with four manually-aimed torps - without a 360 sweep through the `scope first...
...The first shell of the FIVE destroyers racing across from the OTHER convoy I hadn't seen or heard because it was astern, hit the bridge. The next seven shells all hit before I could crash dive, and once I had crash dived it was an elevator ride to oblivion.
A lesson learned about why submarining in shipping lanes is so dangerous. And why you always, always, ALWAYS pause at periscope depth for a full sweep!

Or launched a fabulously successful attack on a convoy at night, in poor weather....
...then realised it was one of ours... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

After looking at my post, I realized I had omitted an important part of the tale. After I turned up the TC, I went to the kitchen to make me something to eat. The trip was gonna be a long one from Midway to the South China Sea so I thought a little something to eat would be in order. Never turn the TC up and leave the room.

Received a Radio Report of a Task Force heading at this and that speed direction.. Stalked it for about a real-life Hour, seconds before lighting up a Heavy Cruiser with 4 torps, I notice an American Flag on the mast. Then I looked back over the Radio Report, must not have seen that it said FRIENDLY Task Force the first time I looked at it, filled with excitement.
