Could someone please explain how the Russians gained control of Grissom AFB when there was no battle lost there. Was this just another gift from the devs to the Russians?

Grissom attacked Rondane and failed, so the owner of Rondane gains Grissom.
It's one of the basic rules, if you fail an attack, you lose the territory that launched that attack.

If that is true the JSF successfully defended USS Reagan so we should have taken the EFEC territory they attacked from...Right?

Right, except the EFEC didn't attack from any territory--it was an "attack from nowhere". This is some stupid rule ubi threw in that they have not bothered explaining.
Each faction has one attack front. If their attack front is connected to multiple territories, it'll attack multiple territories. If none of the three factions has a multiple attack front, they'll throw in a random "attack from nowhere" somewhere so that there'll be at least four maps being played on every turn. That's one condition where "attack from nowhere" is guaranteed to happen. There's also some other conditions where it can happen, but they're currently unpredictable.

rondane was a conquest, and when a side attacks via conquest they lose attacking territory. reagan was assault, an attack from nowhere, and thus no attacking territory to lose.
