I maybe should have made this a PM, but I wanted to test the waters a bit since I know others will read this
In GD, somebody recently asked about special units of the US Army in WWII, particularly about USAAC/USAAF units
Long story short, I found a great site on the 8th AF in WWII, called Little Friends:
http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/sfx.html
In it is info on the Scouting Forces, a special unit of the USAAF- bomber pilots who retrained as P-51 pilots. Although not intended to engage the enemy, they shot down 22 confirmed Axis aircraft
Nice site in general. Click on the unit's colors for pics, the name for roster info, callsigns, etc
But anyway, a Scouting Force campaign is a tasty idea. I don't have a lot of free time right now, but I wonder if later on, maybe a few months, you'd be interested in doing a joint campaign, Jay? By the way, I still owe you some assistance, so don't forget if/when Malta needs testing
But the SF campaign- here is my idea- First several missions are actually B-25 missions. Maybe 4 missions as a bomber pilot, with a training intro in the US. A nice track as an intro movie, lots of possibilities
then, another short track outlining the idea of the Scouting Forces. A P-51 training mission in the UK, then 10 or twelve Scouting Force missions. This makes a possibility of a good selection of varied maps
Finally, a slight break from reality, and the player gets transferred to a regular P-51 squadron, maybe the 356th, nice paint scheme, pretty "unsung" group unlike say the 4th. Leadspitter has done some great skins for this already. Say another 10 missions
The player finishes up his/her tour with say, the 360th
This would give a nice overview of all aspects of the bombing campaign. Some really colorful skins would be in the campaign, too. I really like the idea. What do you think? Only problem is I'd like to include some historic LW skins, and Canon UK makes the best ones in my opinion- but I'm not sure (actually quite sure he wouldn't) he'd give the OK to use them. he's in the process of updating and doesn'r seem to want old skins in circulation
