So, like the title says, i'm new to Heroes of Might and Magic VI. I haven't played any of the others but i've read the preview at GameZone (http://pc.gamezone.com/previews/item/heroes_of_might_and_magic_vi_preview) and I thought it looks really good.
As a beginner to the series, do you think I should play any of the others first? Would it help with understanding mechanics/story? Or can I just jump straight into the beta?
Any response would be appreciated.

First of all, the story of Heroes of Might and Magic 5&6 has nothing to do with any of the previous installments of the series, and even then HoMM6 is a prequel to 5, so I can't imagine it would be too hard to understand the story.
As for the mechanics and gameplay, it's fairly difficult for newcomers. There's a lot of options and menus that can make newer players feel uncomfortable.
The prologue in the beta seemed to give a good summary of a large number of the mechanics, and mostly everything gives you a more in-depth description if you hover the mouse over it for a few seconds (you can make them appear almost instantly if you change some things around in the options menu)

Welcome to the world of might and magic!
I don't think it is necessary to play HOMM I-IV to understand HOMM VI. It might even be confusing, since the game has changed a lot over the years and HOMM I-IV happen on different worlds (as Rottaranowain mentioned).
Playing the beta will certainly introduce you to the HOMM VI game. I would also recommend buying and playing HOMM V. It happens on the same world as HOMM VI, but at a later time. If you are short on cash, you can buy just the Tribes of the East standalone expansion.
The most important thing about HOMM V is the very extensive and excellent fan manual that was created by some of the more prominent fan sites. It has a good rundown of the game mechanics and general strategies. HOMM VI is a different game, but many of the mechanics will be similar.

the basic is the same of all homms but every heroes is special. the unit system changed and killsystem in h6 and much more so its not rly important to buy h5 or smth... you can sure watch some vids about h6 and you will learn it fast. its not that hard to understand^^

I don't need the regular game in order to play the expansion?

thanks for your replies. I think I'm gonna dive into the beta and just watch videos on V to get caught up. If I can hold you guys as an example, it seems like the community is really helpful, so I appreciate it.

Essentially lance42 the series is about learning through fun. The 'Might' alludes to the fun working out probabilities and statistics, whereas the 'Magic' puts forward scenarios that have to be worked out using reason and rational thought. It's more fun than it sounds and you get a wizard familiar called Corky to help you out where your state education failed you.
Welcome to the series!

Tribes of the East is a standalone expansion, you don't need the regular game. That's not the case for Hammers of Fate, the other expansion.
