I just got this game a couple weeks ago, and also been reading through this forum. After looking at pictures of the game I realized my water could be A LOT better looking. I dont know how to make it look better. Im using a GeForce6800 Ultra PCI-E with the latest 71.84 drivers. Heres my settings (custom):
OPENGL 1600x1200 32bit
-Using stencil buffer
-Texture mipmap filter=anistropic
-Texture compresion = none
-Using Dither, Vertex Arrays, and Polygon Stripple
-Multitexture, Combine, 2ndary color, vertex array extension, texture anisotropic extension, texture compress ARB extension are all ON.
In GAME:
-All settings Maxed out
Conf.ini:
-water=3
-forest=3
-effects=2
MY WATER looks flat, a little pixelated, almost like dark blue land. my water doesn't have the waves or reflectiveness like these pictures:

any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

In game select the Hardware settings/video options. You must select perfect in the landscape box for reflective water.
Your print screen is all you need to take a screenshot and they go into your main FB/AEP/PF folder with the name Grab000, Grab001 and so fourth. They are saved as TGA files so you will need a program such as http://www.irfanview.com/
if you don't already have something IrFanview is free and very easy to use.
Almost forgot to add in your config. if you have the perfect selected landtextures will read as 3

Just curious, ncorpuz34, for comparison, once you get perfect mode working: What do you get for fps in the Black Death track?
I have a 6800 Ultra AGP, running a Dell 2001FP at 1600x1200 32 bit. In the Black Death track, I get average 30 fps, dips to a low of 18-20 during the 'hot spots'. I find this fps quite acceptable. If I drop res to 1024x768 (centred mode, no pixel interpolation, with black borders) the fps picks up an extra 10, but the image is so much smaller that I actually prefer the slow fps on the full screen. It's a trade-off. There is little difference in fps for various settings. The biggest factor seems to be the higher resolution.
Mini-poll: what do people consider to be an acceptable fps?

had the same problem. In the IL2 setup program, go to the video tab and select maximum or the GF 6800 option from the dropdown. Fixed it for me anyways.

well I finally got the water working. Solution makes wanna slap myself. (after all the fiddling with the settings, even though the settings were all max, I never pressed "apply" on the ingame settings.) The Water looks absolutely awesome though.
Quick Q about the Black Death track: How do I view my FPS??

To view your FPS you have to do the following.
1) Start the track.
2) Press "Shift-Tab" (at the same time)
3) Type "fps START SHOW" (without the quotes)
4) When you're done, reopen the console and type "fps STOP SHOW"
While the FPS counter is running, it gives you the frame counts at the top including minimum, maximum, and average (average is what you really should be looking at since you may have one frame at 120 fps and another frame at 2 fps the average is where its at).
