Navigation map changing with manual/auto aim

This is most likely a stupid question with a very obvious answer but I need to know: The navigtion map in silent hunter 4 is normally a basic map with darker colors meaning deeper waters. However, If I use auto aim the map changes to a blank map with a weird set of diagonal columns in it. The columns move over the map and reveal some sort of forms that i think represent the shoreline and depth. I can't use this map! how can I turn it off?
