I could not help but smile at this advert in one of our local 'rags'. Very clever and subtle...

Afrikaans is the language.
It's a mixture of mainly Dutch, followed by German, French, Flemish and a few more European languages, including English.
It more or less has been isolated for a few hundred years and has developed it's own identity.

I recently saw the film, "Blood Diamond" starring Leonardo DiCaprio. He portrays a South African diamond and arms smuggler\mercenary character, speaking English with an Afrikaans accent. I thought he did a convincing job, but then I've only met a few South Africans here in Canada. Based on how they speak, I thought DiCaprio did a good job. What do you think, Freddie? Have you seen this film?
P.S. I thought the film was very good, portraying the contradictions and tragedies that are so uniquely African. I was introduced to a new acronym, TIA: This is Africa, denoting the explanation for otherwise incomprehensible social issues.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

subtle as a sledge hammer to the head and about as clever as one also. I have said my peace and I will leave it alone now. There Photoshop skills need a little work though.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I saw a few trailers(not the whole film), and thought DC was a bit out of place. I can only say this knowing the area and accents. It looked like the same scenario as the Hughes film which I felt needed something more convincing - There was an actor who I thought would have been better (can't remember his name at the moment). No! I do not have anything against DC http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. I thought Titanic was well done.

Yes, Africa is generally a mess, except for an oasis here and there. You always have to watch your back and react very fast. Grown up with this - it's just a normal day, but foreigners can be caught unawares by the simmering storm.

As an American, I can say that I'm not offended by the gesture... that's right, I'm not offended.
If this offends anyone who?s from the US, then they are hypocrites for being so. Just take a look on how we portray other nations and religions in our political cartoons and comical satyr. It's only fun and games until a tower or two comes down.
I didn't think it was too funny though. American soldiers does not deserve that kind of image portrayed on them. Especially the reference to Iwo Jima. Instead, they could have used President Bush, the Vice President, Donald Rumsfeld and Tony Blair and it would have made my ribs break from laughter.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

You are right though and I didn't mean to say it was funny regarding the soldiers' actions with the oil well pump.
I was referring to the graphical representation - I also think Bush, Rumsfeld and Blair should have been used instead of the soldiers, who of course are only doing their duty, as did I when I was out there.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I agree wholeheartedly with AO1_AW_SW_USN?s comments: ?.Well said!
I learned some time ago that War is largely ?Big Business?: ??I don?t have a problem with that; ?..I just wish the CEOs would pay closer attention to the portion of the spreadsheet that deals with expenses and potential profit. (?.Or at least make the real reasons for some of their decisions known to the stockholders.)
