I heard that the 53.03/4 nvidia drivers worked well with far cry, so i uninstalled the 56.64 drivers and installed the 53.04, but then the nvidia toolbar showed that it was using old 52.16 drivers. I then uninstalled the display drivers and the nvidia folder with the 52.16 driver, but when I installed a fresh version of 53.04, it still said that the card was using 52.16. Whats going on?

I was updating the drivers on my dads machine the other day and they kept reverting to 52.16 also... We never even used those drivers before. I don't remember what I did to stop that. I probably just installed the new drivers over top of them.

Its a lil tricky but NVidia does include the instructions to do all this correctly.
#1 Open up Control Panel
#2 Open up Add Remove Programs
#3 Uninstall NVidia Display Drivers from here
#4 Reboot when prompted
#5 *IMPORTANT* Go to SAFE MODE
#6 *IMPORTANT* Open My Computer and then Main Drive
#7 *IMPORTANT* Delete the Nvidia Folder located there (UNLESS YOU HAVE NFORCE MAINBOARD, then you have to Open that folder and delete the Correct Video FOlder)
#8 Reboot
#9 It will try to auto detect new device, just hit cancel.
#10 Disable any Anti-Virus
#11 Run installer for New Drivers
#12 Reboot when prompted
Done.
Some people say to delete the registry entries too but this is not required, once the folder where drivers are contained is gone, it wont have anything to auto install.
*IMPORTANT* Extra lil note:
NEVER EVER INSTALL THE NVIDIA DRIVERS FROM WINDOWS UPDATE! EVER!! If you did install these, then you have a problem and will have to remove and reinstall from Safe Mode (that will require 3 boots into Safe Mode!). Its a royal P.I.T.A.
Good luck and have fun

When your PC is rebooting (DOS Screens showing) start hitting the f8 key.
After a few minutes/seconds (varies by PC) a new menu will appear.
Use the arrows up and down to select what boot mode you want:
(common ones are Safe Mode, Debugging, Start Windows Normally)
hit Enter when you highlight the boot mode you want
Follow instructions when you choose you login account (WinXP, 2k, 2k3) preferably an Administrative LEVEL account
Youre now in safe mode (or whichever other Boot Mode you selected).
Hope this helps.
