Recently I realized I wasn't getting the full up bandwidth I should be getting. I traced/googled it to my router needing a firmware upgrade, so I did that. That of course totally erased all my carefully made configurations in the router with ports, forwardings, IPs, DMZ, firewall, all that jive. All gone, all back to router default.

There are two PCs on the router: my gamer, and my dedi.

So instead of redoing all my configs, I just fired up the server on the dedi. No DMZ, no ports open or forwarded, nothing at all. Just a totally freshly reset router with a new firmware.

Server works perfectly. People from all over the world playing on it all night long, all custom maps.

Oh yeah, and I got my full up bandwidth back. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sorry to follow up on my own shiz, but:

Really full server lately. Seems like more and more people are figuring out how to make their fc2 installs work. I've been glancing at my server for four hours today and it's always had either 15 or 16 people, always a new batch of bodies in there, one after the other. People are not bailing from rounds and the server/PB scenario is butter since I upgraded my router firmware: people are not crashing out and the server keeps pumpin, even on my ****e dsl. I'm seeing TDM matches with 16 guys and scores like 100 to 91, round the clock.

All this on a router with no ports opened/forwarded, no dmz, no nuthin. Cheapo 768 up DSL, $40 mobo, $80 CPU. Guys from all over the world playing against each other, all through my little box, no complaints. Most impressive netcode I've seen in an MP game in ten years of online fps.

And because your dedi works now and you get players on it, you no longer care if you're completely open to the outside world, without protection/firewall and the shiz?

I have no idea if I'm open or not, because I have no ports open and no DMZ enabled, though my Windows firewall is off. That's kinda the beauty of this story: I've opened up nothing on the router.

But no, I don't care. It's just a server. If they wanna steal my map files, that's okay. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's called UPnP....and ports are STILL being opened/forwarded to your PC. It's just happening DYNAMICLY instead of being controlled by you.....lol

Personally, I'd rather "control" the port-forwarding etc. myself and enable/disable it at will, because allowing my router to answer the call of an application dynamicly also means that should some malware get onto my server it could ask the router to open/enable ports for it's brothers and sisters to come in and play.....sound safer than controlling it yourself? hehe

I just looked at the router setup. The UPnP box is unchecked after the reset.
