hi

i was wandering what do u guys usually do when u are spotted and attacked by enemy aircraft ( hurricane), do u guys engage it if its clear weather or do a crash dive or other evasive maneuver. my last encounter with a hurricane made quite a dent on my boat, i was attacked with a bomb or depth charge and in second run when i was diving to periscope depth i think he strafed or hit me again real good and made quite a mess of my boat and i had to load situation i was with hull integrity at 67% and dmg to both engines rooms, command room and flooding also. im in july 1940 in grid am53. So what u guys advise for future situations ??

Alaaaaaarm!

Crash dive, ASAP. Trying to take on aircraft with flak is a last-ditch measure, only sensible if you are in too shallow water to dive. Not you should be there anyway. Take care though to check just how deep the water is, if you aren't in open ocean - hitting the bottom at 6 kt can do a surprising amount of damage.

Later in the war things will only get worse - better-armed, longer range aircraft with radar. It is the threat from the air that makes survival in the latter part of the war so difficult.

Or if your sub is already crippled so bad that you cannot dive safely, then use your anti-aircraft guns. Though sometimes I use AA guns when I get bored of constantly diving and decide to make a stand against aircraft, though in real life it would be foolish. In my experience going at flank speed and suddenly changing course reduces the chance of being hit. Watch out for Catalina planes and B-24 Liberator Bombers, those are really dangerous!

welcome firebird1976

before you go on mission, it is always better you check your damadge control .

british HurricaneMkII Fighter Bomber has a 1 X 250 KG bomb on board .

when the ocean is very wild and you get attacked by a HurricaneMkII Fighter Bomber, drops Deploy decoys and make a crash dive.
Why Deploy decoys behind you ?
the enemy thinks you are still at that place where you have dropped Deploy decoys .
if your u-boat have damadge , enter the place where you have damage in your damadge control .

jes indeed , check first your depth under keel http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu316/croft-kenny/SearchRadar.gif

But decoys only last about 5 minutes...

Why should decoys work against an aircraft? They were designed for use against surface vessels. They worked by generating a bubble cloud, which it was hoped would register on the surface vessel's sonar, attract its attention and allow the U-boat sufficient time to dive and pull away from contact. If this decoy does work in the game against aircraft, then somebody goofed when they designed this game. Of course, we know there were a lot of mistakes or omissions in this game. Having Hurricane fighters flying ASW patrols is one of the biggest ones.

Having a damage control team on at all times is not the best thing to do. I suppose the game assumes they are sitting outside the boat, at least some of them. Because a direct hit or a near miss will mean damage to your boat AND a dead damage control team!

Careful with that!

And yes, decoys only work against destroyers with ASDIC

My rule of thumb is to crash dive immediately with a radar warning when within range of land based aircraft. Of course, this area gets bigger with longer ranged aircraft later in the war. Depending on sea conditions, I will sometimes stay up longer until I get multiple radar warnings, especially in a heavy sea that masks the hull against radar.

Should I get jumped by non-radar equipped aircraft, (so that they are within visual range before I detect them) I'll usually go flank and zigzag to evade, while manning the guns. The problem is that the enemy aircraft's guns are very potent and if I'm diving, I'm slow and defenseless, just as the real boats were. The result of an attempted dive is damage, and, usually, a bomb down the conning tower hatch.

try it to . drop Deploy decoys if you are attacked by a plane . make a crash dive ... you will see. Try it ! the planes attacked you Deploy decoys and not your u-boat . http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

A hint on receipt of a radar warning - hit < or > - this will show you whats been detected.
If its an aircraft crash dive if safe to do so and as soon as your under turn 90 degrees and keep diving at flank.
Never been hit doing this. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
If you spot an aircraft same applies, several times I haven't been attacked and when I have they miss - so far. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

If you hit the < or > buttons you can then also pan the camera round whatever it is you see, not really usefull if its an aircraft but if its a warship you can see whats running with it ie a single ship, convoy or task force.
Strictly cheating though........ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I always at least dive to scope depth, if not crash drive as soon as I see a plane. Though with swordfish I am tempted to man the guns, wouldn't do that in real life tho!
