Audio clicks, video stutters

Hi all, I searched but could not find:

I can play the game, but I get audio clicks and pops, and the video stutters. I really don't want to turn off the rich emmersive (sp?) features and effects, so I'll live with this if I have to, but I wonder if there's something simple I can tweak.

This is a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000, using the Omega drivers (v2.5.76, and thanks to the moderator who suggested this).

Any clues are appreciated.

defrag hard drive, update sound drivers, do full install, try alternative sound drivers if they exist, disable any programs that might also be running in the background.

that's pretty much the laundry list of what to try.... hope it helps.
