First off, I'm a Naval Combat Information Operator by trade. Radar operator for those who were not sure what that is exactly. Anyway, a large portion of the trade qualification includes training on maneuvering boards, ie: manual plotting. From closest point of approach (CPA), to intercept course, to wind over the deck for operating with a helo, nuclear plotting, oh and can't forget passing at a given distance! Not that you would use most of those, however plotting the intercept course on your own would be challenging, and there are many other plotting techniques that may come in useful. And since all the plotting tools are currently not available, this may come in handy for some players.
So I leave with you 2 things. First a pic in PNG format of the actual maneuvering board I use. Second, is a link to a PDF manual on instructions on how to plot if you don't know how.
You will also require real life tools such as: pencil and eraser (duh), ruler, parallel ruler, compass.

AWSOME INDEED http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
Thanks VERY much - this is the sort of thing that SHOULD be inbuilt into the Game . I have seen this before but lost the link.

You are my hero! I've been searching for this information since the game came out with no luck.... Desperate, I even derived my own trig formulas for best approach/intercept course, and scenario based torp solutions.
I had no idea combat navigation was so interesting. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
I can't wait to compare notes... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Tha.... err... Danke!
P.S. Bah, it's in imperial.

I went to the site to download. I found there are many pdf files. what pdf file do I need to download to use this for silent hunter iii?
I think that Chapter 6 - Maneuvering Board Manual need for me. right?

Find a good sea going officer and ask them to show you the sine, cosine and radian rules. Then you can do alot of this in your head.... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And I guess that's why I wouldnt make a good seagoing officer...
Bulwark - Thanks for posting this! I'd love to understand this aspect better and learn how it's done! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I am thinking I might see if Kinkos can print and laminate one for me so I am curious about its actual size. How large would the maneuvering board be?

You're all welcome for the contribution!
For the download, yes Chapter 6 is what you want.
The actual size, (I had to go eyeball the measurment), is approximately 13x13 inches.
And if I asked a sea going Officer about sine, cosine and radian rules, I doubt I'd get a good answer. Also, I'm not an officer, I'm non-commissioned.

Some of the Fuzzy text is hard to read in the bottom left. Here's what it says:
LOGARITHMIC TIME, SPEED, AND DISTANCE SCALE
Use of miles with logarithmic time, speed, and distance scale
TO FIND SPEED, place one point of dividers on elapsed time and second point on distance in miles. Without changing spread of dividers or right-left relationship of points, place first point on 60; second point will then indicate speed in knots.
TO FIND DISTANCE OR TIME, place one point of dividers on 60 and second point on speed in knots. Without changing spread of dividers or right-left relationship of points, place first point on time; second point will then indicate distance in miles. Or, place second point on distance in miles; first point will then indicate time.
Actual distance and speed units can be used in the same way as relative units.
USE OF 3-SCALE NOMOGRAM
Given any two corresponding quantites, solve for third by laying rule through points on proper scales and read intersection on third scale.
*note: for sizing, on the bottom right fuzzy text says "10-inch diameter"

Yeah I tried to push for a MO board to be included in the game...since it really is the way to find most everything you need....this is the way they do it....this is the way you learn in Naval Navigation.....I posted the same link a while ago....but I have not found an online digital MO board at all.....this would be awesome if someone could make it! Its too bad....that MO board reminds me of College!

Now all we need is a good TMA (Target Motion Analysis) tool with speed strips....

I've trying to figure out if they used this back in the day...I would say yes(on a hunch)....because it does not invovle anything modern....all you need, besides a MO board sheet, is a pair of parrell rulers and a compass and a pencil.....everything for Time/Speed/Distance is in a slide rule at the bottom of the sheet.....all you have to do is have two varibles (which you can get ploting on the MO board).....mark them down....and connect the dots on the slide rule and where ever the line crosses...you have your third variable. Once you work on these things you can plot almost anything even changes in course and speed of the target.....its all about relative motion!
I remember ploting a course(simulated) to a new sector screen(bascially a box you have to stay in a certain distance and bearing from the center of a moving battle group) of a battle group coming no more than a certain distance at a CPA from the center ship in the battlegroup and be there at time X...all on a MO board...no calculator. It really is everything we need for the game...but it takes some time to learn...no more than an hour for the basics of ploting target course and speed though!!

the only converstion I see is converting meters to yards....everything else is easy
