View Full Version : What I hear: Microsoft Prepares Legal Action Over Sony Propaganda

This was found on the X-Play boards on G4TV.com. I take no credit in making this article

Sony has been showing off the following chart (above), which supposedly shows a price comparison between the PS3 and Xbox 360.

You would think this is the creation of some half-joking Sony loyalist, but this is actually what Sony is using for marketing. Not only does it compare the cost of online, which is pointless right now since it?s still not clear if developers will charge individually on the PS3, but the way they add up the supposed price of the Xbox 360 is just 100% dishonest.

First off, they use the Core Xbox 360 price of $299, but then they add on $100 for the HDD, and $50 for the Wireless controller. I?m surprised they didn?t also add in $20 for a headset too. Anyways, the Xbox 360 ($399) comes with both the HDD and the Wireless controller (as well as High-Def cables and a headset, neither come with either PS3 model). The only way you?d end up paying the amount they?re adding up for the Xbox 360 is if you?re trying to waste money.

Then we have the HD-DVD drive. This is an optional add-on that will be used for HD-DVD movies only. It has nothing to do with games, but of course, that is why Sony is trying to focus on it. When you have nothing to compete in the games arena, move into technical numbers that are construed in such a way that it?s blatant intention is to confuse the mainstream consumer.

Microsoft is aware of this, and it seems they?ve had enough of the Sony hype train. It seemed MS and Sony were content with making jabs at each other back and forth in interviews, but when it comes to flat-out lying to retailers and customers, something else must be done. Microsoft is preparing legal action against this, so we can add one more lawsuit to the Sony pile.

Here?s another report, thanks to DavidGX for sending in the story:

"First up, were you aware that to use your Xbox 360 Core system you?re required to buy the 20GB drive add-on, an HD DVD drive, a wireless controller, and an Xbox Live sub? We weren?t either. But hey, it says right there, ?requires users to buy? and this is, in fact, a ?fact sheet.? Of course, none of that?s actually true, and what?s more, were one to use the Xbox 360 Premium console pack in that chart instead of the Core pack, the total would be $399 for a console with that very same hard drive, wireless controller, and Xbox Live Silver subscription (which provides access to everything but multiplayer) ? remember, kids, an HD DVD drive is not required to do anything but watch high def movies ? it has nothing to do with high def gaming. We hear Microsoft ain?t too happy about this chart either and is preparing certain legal action, namely because it could be misleading to otherwise unwitting retail employees selling customers game consoles this holiday season. Go figure."

P.S. -In the interest of fairness, it?s also worth pointing out the Wii browser is what will cost you after the first 6 months ? not their online service. What?s more, if you download the browser before June of 2007, it?s straight up free. Otherwise, Nintendo hasn?t yet announced details of the cost of their online service so far as we know. Another nice one, Sony.

P.P.S. -We just confirmed with Microsoft that another Sony claim ? that you need a memory unit or a hard drive to use the WiFi adapter ? is also false. You can grab a Core pack with no memory card and plug in a WiFi adapter and get on your home network. Sheez Sony, did we mention we moonlight as fact checkers? <div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I posted this story last night on the GB forums, and of course, the rabid PS3 fanboys not only jumped on me for being anti-Sony, but actually managed to somehow pretend like this was a standard business practice and that Sony didn't lie at all.

Go get 'em, Microsoft!

It always amuses me how so many people act like Microsoft is this giant corporate behemouth (which it is), while Sony is this small little mom-and-pop business, just trying to squeak by.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif Sony is anything but a mom-and-pop business. But they are definatly trying to squeak by (or so I see of them, I've had bad experiences with their products http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif). I think the PS3 is either going to be the beginning again of Sony, or the end of them.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I think PS3 will secure Blu-ray's dominance of the home video market and it's interaction with PSP will increase PSP sales too. Things are going to get a lot better for Sony once PS3 has taken hold of the games market.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I disagree. If you look at the history of Sony's memory products, they all failed, with exception of the floppy disc. Blu-ray is way too expensive for the "average household". I live in an "average household" and there is no way in hell we could affoard $80 DVD's. We don't even have a flat-screen TV http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

HD-DVD movies and Blu-ray movies are going to cost 25.00-30.00 dollars. The big difference is the price of players. Blu-Ray are almost twice as much as the HD-DVD players.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I mean not to turn this into a blue ray discussion but i think going blue ray was simply a bad idea, yes it may pick up in the future but as of now hd dvds are the most popular among them. Heres a couple articles

http://www.igniq.com/2006/09/ps3s-blu-ray-destined-to-fail.html

http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/5647/53/

and yes UMDS sounded great before launch, now look at it, some of the major studios are cutting back on the releases due to sluggish sales with the average release selling at around 50k units. Hell even sony themselves are cutting back on the umds. Thats just for the psp, if this ends up happening to blue ray dvds then who knows what will happen since blue ray, i dont care how much you want to deny it, is a one of the major draws to the ps3.I mean in a sense its logical that these bigcompanys will go the hd dvd format since its the big thing and they'll see more revenue come from the hd dvds then the blue ray at this time. Sony is really gonna have to impress Universal, Warner, Paramount etc. in order for them to see any hope in blue ray and the failure of umds is really gonna bite them hard<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

From what I've read, HD-DVDs have better pictures, whereas Blu-Ray holds more on each disc.

It's really hard to say which format is going to win at this point. There are already some companies that are producing hybrid players, capable of playing both formats. Personally, I don't think that too many people are going to be in a huge rush to get these expensive next-gen players, when their current DVD players work just fine. The gap between DVD and Blu-Ray or HD-DVD just isn't as big as the gap between VHS and DVD.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The picture on Blu-ray discs up to now hasn't be as good as the format is capable of because only single-layer discs have been available, the first dual-layer BD-roms will be released in November, The picture quality in future releases will be at least as good as HD-DVD as they both support the same high-quality encoding. Blu-Ray has far more support that HD-DVD with movie studios at the moment and if tey were to pick a standard now, it would almost certainly be BD.

The power of the Playstation brand is one of the stragngest assets in the Blu-ray camp, Blu-Ray players will get into people's homes much faster than HD-DVD can thanks to PS3. However, if BD doesn't become the standard and HD-DVD does it won't have any effect on PS3 since the games will continue to be on BD-Roms, just like PSP games are still on UMD even though UMD hasn't been a huge success up to now. Blu-Ray needs PS3 to succeed more than PS3 needs Blu-ray. The capacity of Blu-ray is excellent and very useful for next-gen games.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Add to that the fact that HDTV market penetration is and has been hovering at about 8%. WOO! The public is hungry for some new tech right! ... Right? The fact of the matter is 90% of the public couldn't give a darn how many dots per square inch a new format can deliver, their tv's can't display the format they've got as it is. All they're gonna care about for at least 6 years is price.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

According to a friend of mine at Best Buy, Peoples general understanding of HD is something like this. "Well i have an HDTV, What is this blu-ray thing and is it any different than HDTV?" "Well, it has larger capacity disc's which doesn't effect you in any way, and the players cost twice as much as HDDVD players."
"Oh really! well i will take the HDDVD player then." He says this is a typical conversation with customers. At half the cost they can buy a really nice home theater set up to go with thier TV. I have said the same thing that was said earlier, SONY has failed in all extra formats with the exception of the memory stick. All of thier stuff is proprietary to thier product. Very few goods not produced by SONY use any of thier accessories. I think SONY is starting to feel the consumer backlash to thier wild claims and smug sense of superiority.

Sony Clarifies Its Fact Sheet Statements
By: César A. Berardini - "Cesar"
Oct. 20th, 2006 5:32 pm
Following the tremendous heat that Sony?s next-generation comparison fact sheet generated, the company has decided to issue a statement. Dave Karraker, Senior Director of Corporate Communications of SCEA informed us:

"Through our comparison chart we are not implying that you must purchase the myriad of peripherals and add-ons that Microsoft offers to play your Xbox 360. You don't. However, if you want to attempt to come close to the performance of the $499 PlayStation 3 by using your Xbox 360, Core or Premium, you could only do that through expensive add-ons -- that is what our chart is demonstrating. Once you add it all up, it would cost you more than our $499 unit, and you would still not come close to everything we offer, ie: free multiplayer gaming, 50GB storage capacity of Blu-ray disc, Blu-ray disc player for games AND movies, processing power of the Cell Broadband Engine." <div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yawn.

Who really friggin cares. I know, the PS3 is such a bargain, we're lucky that Sony isn't charging $2000 for the PS3.

As for online gaming, MS just announced that as of now, there are four million people signed on. XBL offers a great service for a minimal cost. $50 per year, to play any game you want? We still don't know if Sony is going to be offering a "premium" online service, or how much their developers are going to charge for subscription services.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
