There seems to be some confusion about Ubisoft’s Online Services Platform (OSP) and Uplay. To help clear any misconceptions or confusion here’s an outline of what each of the services are and what they’re not.

Uplay

It's all about you
Our mission is to create a place where we play, share and win together. And we need you to bring it to life. Whether you're a hardcore gamer or play now and then, Uplay is for you. It'll reward you for playing the games you love with a range of services all designed around you.

Ok, so that’s the PR answer, but what is it in real terms?

Uplay is a totally FREE and more importantly totally optional service which offers you the player a chance to unlock additional content at no cost.

When you play any Uplay enabled game you are able to collect points by completing actions within the game, a little like achievements and trophies. You can then use these points to unlock content (rewards) for any of your Uplay enabled games.

Redeeming points for content does require you to sign up to Uplay but doing so is free and requires nothing more than your Ubi.com account email and your game account name i.e. gamertag or PSN.

Points can be earned and spent across any Uplay enabled game, so you can earn points in Splinter Cell Conviction but spend them in Assassins Creed 2. You can read more about earning points and claiming rewards in the Uplay FAQ (http://uplay.uk.ubi.com/community/faqs)

Uplay does NOT require a constant connection; you can earn rewards while playing offline. You will however need to connect to Uplay to update your profile with newly earned actions and redeem rewards.

Uplay is a totally optional service and while choosing not to participate means you could miss out on some great free extra content it will not impact on your overall game experience.

Note: Uplay is currently in the beta phase so some functions i.e. The Shop are currently unavailable and show as ‘coming soon’.

Online Services Platform (OSP)

OSP is a system used for PC titles only and requires the player to be connected to the internet and logged into their Ubi account while they play. While intended as a copy protection measure, it also offers several benefits.

OSP also syncs your game saves both online and on your PC enabling you to play from any computer you have the game installed on at any time, so long as you have access to an internet connection.

You can read more on OSP in the OSP FAQ (http://support.uk.ubi.com/online-services-platform/)

Uplay & OSP – So what’s the difference?

OSP is not optional. Players must access the service* to play their PC title, doing so requires a permanent connection

Uplay is optional; it does not require a permanent connection. The two services are independent in their own right; Uplay is NOT a DRM system and should not be confused with the Online Services Platform.

We hope this clears any confusion but if you still have questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

*Ubisoft have stated OSP will be removed from PC titles via an update after an undetermined period of time, at which point players will no longer need to access OSP to play their game.
