I'm lately considering getting back into flying next Spring for the first time since October 2003, the last time I flew. Probably going to re-study my entire Gleim Private Pilot study CD-ROM software during the winter and go in for a medical renew around my B'day in early March.

But I struggle about getting IFR rated, I'm simply torn over it. I had instrument lessons in the summer of 2001 and got about 20 hours of it under my belt when the 9/11 terror attacks happened. That and the fact that I didn't like my instructor and also found instrument training to be both boring and grueling made me quit half way.

I found that IFR flying at least for me, takes all the fun out of it. I was not enjoying the training at all, which seemed more like torture than anything else. I was always stressed out and frazzled at the end of a training session. But I was doing it alright and the instructor was of the opinion that I had what it takes to fly instrument OK.

I have known quite a few pilots that just fly VFR and have done so for scores of years, never had a problem. But still it seems like getting stuck somewhere due to bad weather seems like a probability at some point. For now I just have to get current again for fair weather flying, so I guess I have a lot of time to consider what to do about the instrument problem.
What would you do??
