In your Far Cry folder, open the system.cfg in notepad, find the line: r_driver "" and put in the brackets OpenGl. So when you are finished it should say r_driver="OpenGL" rather than r_driver="Direct3D9" or something like that.

I switched to gl because directx was bad on my machine. The gl was sweet but I found a nasty bug with it. When I got to the bunker level, all my save games disappeared when I used the gl drivers. After finally fixing the directx drivers, the game plays normally now and no more disappearing savegames.

Just wanted to let you know in case you end up with this problem. It really drove me nuts for a while.
