I'm trying to play Uru Ages Beyond Myst, but when I try to run it I'm told I have to put the CD-Rom in. Well, the CD is in. All technical support has to say about it is that they don't support CD-RWs. I assume they mean they drives. My optical drive is a DVD-RW, and it's all I have. Is there a hack available so I can get by that?

Welcome to the forums, AngusEm.

Yours is not a terribly uncommon problem! (Ah, that lovely disc copy protection.) No need for hacks, however. Fortunately, Ubisoft has released a no-disc fix... but I think it only works with Uru:The Complete Chronicles or with The Path of the Shell expansion installed (on top of Ages Beyond Myst).

The fix is right here:
http://help.support.ubi.com/UruCC_n.zip

It contains four files that are meant to replace the four in question in the main Uru folder.

But, I'm not sure it will work with just Ages Beyond Myst...

Let me dig around a little more.

Oh, yes. One other option: The downloadable version of The Path of the Shell also eliminates the need for having the disc in the drive. (It also includes all the content from the first expansion as well.)

I can tell you now that it doesn't work with ABM. I had to install the Shell demo. Then it worked. Thanks.
BTW, yes, anti-piracy schemes interfering with customers' use of the game is not uncommon--it's ubiquitous--what I'm not used to is going to technical support and being told we don't support your optical drive so go jump in a lake. Usually they have a tip or a patch, (that works) and that's the end of it.

Ubisoft Tech support seems to have taken the "go jump in the lake" approach to customer satisfaction to whole new heights.

(The SafeDisc/drive incompatibility issue has been a bit of a bane for them. I think they just want it to go away.)

They usually just send folks like yourelf down here to the "mailroom" where all the volunteers who simply love the game hang out.

But, at least now you're up and running... and have THREE quests to complete instead of just one. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
