I was very pleased by the Postman's knock on the door of Jambo Towers this morning. I have acquired a rare first edition hard back of 'U-Boat War' by Bucheim http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif For those who aren't familiar with him - he wrote our forum 'bible' novel - 'Das Boot'.
205 photos feature in this publication, taken during WW2 aboard U-Boats on patrol and in harbour for the German propaganda machine, and I must say they are amazing.
I'll share a few of them here with you. If you want more just shout and I'll post them up.
I'm really chuffed as I've now ticked off my two most wanted books to add to my ever growing U-Boat library - this and U-Boat War Patrol, The Hidden Photgraphic Diary of U564 by Lawrence Paterson which I received last week. Happy days!

A sound investment RJ! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I have exactly the same book, which I bought second-hand through Amazon. I didn't even realize it's the first edition until you mentioned it! (mine has a copyright date of 1978 - is that the same as yours?)

Wow amazing http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I'm not sure why but after playing SH4 for awhile, I like the german Uboats alot better. They have a much better feel to them for some reason :/ I would love more pictures http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif!
Maybe it is the wood paneling and the fancy font the Nazi's used everywhere

RJ,
A very nice catch indeed. I had to run upstairs just now to check my copy. It was not a first edition (1986 version), but an excellent book that I am so pleased to have snapped up from the bookstore, so many years ago. The photographs are amazing. Congratulations.

Another fine book to your collection RJ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
I have the same book as well - although the book is not at hand to check the edition date because it's still hiding in a box somewhere...

Hey RJ - What year is your edition? My one is 1978, just wondering if mine is a 1st edition.

We're referring to the English translation first edition U301. Is that the version you mean?
I did not read it in German if thats what you mean.
It was in hardback but with no photographs!
I distinctly remember the year because I travelled abroad at that time, thats how I remember it was 1975.
You might like to clear first edition publication date with the printers. Ask them when was the first edition printed in English.

It maybe a different publication then, I do understand that Bucheim did write other books,
The book I read was Das Boot.
It was 1975 I know because as I said I travelled back to the UK in that year so thats how I remember it was '75.
Bucheim most probably sold his copyright to the printers because of the success of the novel.
The date 1978 in RJ's book is most probably the date either of that particular printers first printing of the book (by them) or the date they purchased the copyright.

Das Boot and U-Boat War are two different publications. Das Boot is a novel, and U-Boat War is a photographic collection along with a narrative of a real U-Boat patrol - both are byt he same author. Similar, but different. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
This is the publication details I have of Das Boot (This is my second copy of Das Boot as the previous one fell apart but the pertinent details should remain the same)

Yes you are right RJ.
For some reason I got it into my head that you thought Das Boot was published in 1978. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Yes, I would say that you have a great find there in The U-Boat War!

No worries U301. You may surface and run on diesels - no need for silent running http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
