Okay, so I upgraded both of my versions to 1.41 and 2.1. Unfortunately that damn lag that I was experiencing with the Dwarven town and fighting on the dirt and swamp still exists!

This is getting very frustrating and what annoys me most is that I haven't seen anyone else mention that they have this problem. What the hell is going on with my system that I am getting this massive lag? My system is more than powerful enough to handle this game, even on the highest settings, so that is definitely not the problem. I have made sure to install the newest version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft's site, I have the most up to date video card drivers, and I even made sure to set the setting of both games equally so there is no conflict. Nothing works and no one seems to know how to help me.

At this point I am begging someone to truly see if they can figure this out because I can't play this game anymore and it's really frustrating. The game worked perfectly fine before, but as soon as I installed the expansion (I even re-installed it, no luck), the lag problems began.

Try this:
Download and install hwmonitor from http://www.hmonitor.com/
Run the program.
Launch Heroes 5 and go to a area when it lags.
Alt tab out of the game and check the temperature of the video card by hovering your mouse cursor over the icon by the clock.
If it's too high it may be related to the game leaks that cause the video card to overheat. The only solution may be to clean the cooling fan of the video card or perhaps try older video card drivers.

Well, unfortunately that didn't help me. Every time I launched the program, it would lock up my system for some reason so I couldn't even get into the game if I wanted to.

Any other possible solutions or maybe another program similar to this that might not lock me up?

Oh, and here is my dxdiag file just in case. I'm sure it won't help, but you never know.

1st off the video card you have -x600 with 256 ram isn't enough to play the game at highest settings even in a 1024 resolution.
The thing is that the game needs 512 ram(video) to properly operate at highest (I tested with 3 video cards 7600 gt, 7600 and 7900 and I saw a fps drop when casting spells that I didn't see on the 512 one, also on places of adventure map that had lots of objects).
The main reason that may be behind the lag is the processor. Try going to bios and disable the hyper-threading option.
I'll post a temperature program later...

That's just it. I had absolutely no problems running the original game at the highest settings (minus that anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering stuff) and it ran perfectly fine. Still, that said, I have lowered the quality to see if that was the problem and the lag still exists.

As for the processor, same thing as above. It had absolutely no problem working before.

And you know what, not for nothing, but if a card as powerful as the one I have can't handle this, then Nival did a piss poor job of optimizing this game.

Small update: I went into my BIOS and apparently my system is not hyper-threading capable, but I did set it to only use one processor instead of the dual processor. Didn't make any difference. The lag still remained.

Second small update: I am getting it to run smoother with the Image Quality set to Very Low. So, it must have something to do with my video card, but I still don't understand why if A) it worked perfectly fine before and B) 256 MB should be more than enough to run at least at the Normal setting.

Try this program: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
It's the same as hmonitor.
The temperature you should be watching is temp1 - the video cards temperature.
Did you by any chance upgrade something before the add-on was out? Like the ram memory?
Perhaps your video drivers?
On a sidenote I see a lot of people complaining with the 9600/x600 video card it seems Nival never tested them properly.

No, no major upgrades like RAM or anything like that, but yes I have updated my video card drivers. I always do. I'm one of the belief that the newer it is, the better it must be so I'm always upgrading that as soon as it's released, even if I haven't had any noticable problems with a previous one.

Quick question before I try this program? What should the temperature be if it's normal and what is considered high?

2nd quick question. Aren't all modern video cards supposed to have fans attached to keep them cool? I went into my tower last night to blow out any dust and see if the fan was spinning properly. Imagine my surprise when I saw the card didn't even have a fan.
This isn't my card, but it looks similar.
Video card without a fan (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.asp?Image=14%2D102%2D581%2D01%2Ejpg%2C14 %2D102%2D581%2D02%2Ejpg%2C14%2D102%2D581%2D03%2Ejp g%2C14%2D102%2D581%2D04%2Ejpg%2C14%2D102%2D581%2D0 5%2Ejpg%2C14%2D102%2D581%2D06%2Ejpg&CurImage=14%2D102%2D581%2D01%2Ejpg&Description=ATI+100%2D714145+Radeon+9600+256MB+DDR +AGP+4X%2F8X+All%2DIn%2DWonder+2006+Edition+Video+ Card+%2D+Retail)

It has that big black thing on it, but I don't see how there could possibly be a fan inside of that. Plus, I felt no air when I put my hand over it. Kinda annoys me that in this day and age, with the stress put upon these cards from today's games, that a card built for gaming doesn't have a fan on it. Now I feel as if I should go buy a new one.

unreal_az

@KingImp yes it should have have a fan .. if you don't have atach one (it should be cheap).
A normal temp would be 45-60.
I think without the fan your temperature will go to 80..
Also try an older catalyst.
Sometimes newer isn't better cause they tend to focus on the newer video cards and lose support for older (they will never recognise that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ).

Okay, I hate to be a pain, but I am totally confused now.

There is nothing saying Temp1 anywhere. The only thing I see listed is HD0: 30C and I'm assuming that's my hard drive. It's not reading anything else.

Oh, and in regards to the video drivers, I tried two different older versions. It actually made the lag problem worse.

Ok. Took me a while to find it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Download this program everest and it will show your video card temperature.
After runing it go to computer, sensor.
There should be a gpu temp there.
Then run heroes and alt tab out of it.
See if your temperature goes up quick while you get the lag.
If so atach a cooler to your video card.

Well, I truly appreciate the help unreal, but unfortunately this program didn't help either. Once again, the only temperature it was showing me was my hard drive.

I guess this card that Dell gave me doesn't have a sensor on it to read. I'd probably be better off just buying a brand new card with a fan attached since I honestly don't know how or trust that I would be able to put a fan in without breaking some other component.

Thanks again for the help.

New info for you unreal. See if you can figure this one out as now I am completely stumped (even moreso now than before).

I decided to see if this problem existed with the original game. I went into Options and set the Image Quality to Very High. I then created a map and set up 4 different factions (Haven, Inferno, Necropolis, & Academy). I played for a week and not once did I see any lag while in the town or on the battlefield.

Then, I loaded up Hammers of Fate and created the same exact map with the same exact factions. Immediately upon entering the Necro town, the lag began again, just like the Fortress problem. The other faction's towns had no problem whatsoever. Then I fought on the dirt which caused me lag problems in the past. Huge lag problem as well there, but there wasn't a single slowdown while fighting on the same exact land when trying this on the original game.

This pretty much proves to me that it has to be some kind of a coding problem somewhere because how could it work perfectly fine with one version and not the other.

Any ideas?

I guess you did indeed prove the problem lies within HOF.
Somehow my system also had problems with HOF (random crashes, possibly Necropolis-related). I'm afraid i have no out-of-the-box solutions..

@unreal-az - could this problem be caused by the memory-leaks ? and if so, would increasing the Heapsize help ? (if at all possible in the HOMMV-engine or any other way)

Nah I think it's the ATI video cards!! They s*ck!!! Have you tried going into the video card settings and letting the program decide what settings to use? Or are you setting everything to "high" levels?
I suggest you go into your video card settings and reset to default then "test" the different settings.
Then again you can give-up and go out and buy an Nvidia 7000 series or higher card!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Unbelievable! I figured out the problem.
Technically it's not a coding issue or a video card issue, but it does have to do with an internal setting.

I went into the user.cfg file to look for something regarding another problem I am having and came across a line that was different in the HoF file than it is in the original file.
The line setvar gfx_fullscreen is set to 1 in the original, but for some reason it is set to 0 in the HoF user.cfg file. I set it to 1 and lo and behold, the problem is completely gone.

I can't believe that I have been having all these problems due to a simple line in a .cfg file. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
