Just like the Mark Vb and LF Vb, the L and F are low and high altitude versions.
Not to be confused with the way that the LF IX operates, the low alt Seafire III and Spitfire V means you're pretty much restricted to 3000 meters or lower for best operation. Above that, performance drops like a rock.
