View Full Version : Help with mysterious PCI device

Fellas,
As I was having a few issues I decided to replace my generic PSU with a Corsair 520. Anyway, installed it and when I switched back on three out of the four USB connections on the back of the comp no longer work!

Device manager shows an error saying PCI device not working, so I try to reintsall drivers using windows but it does not find any.

Odd thing is that there are four USB connections in total, one of which goes to a powered USB hub which is working perfectly! I've had to plug mouse and keyboard into hub in order to ask this question.

What PCI device is being talked about? I've tried tracking it down but I am rather lost, would appreciate any help as yet again the wife thinks I'm an idiot for breaking stuff.

Cheers

That's a bit weird.

What were the initial 'few issues' that made you replace the PSU?

I suppose the three USB ports that do not work are on the motherboard?

Are all leads from the PSU to the motherboard connected correctly?

(Did you take sufficient anti-static precautions while replacing the PSU? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif)

There's a tool with which one can identify 'Unknown Devices': Unknown Device Identifier (http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html). Using it should enable you to figure out what device it is...
(Running it will leave an icon 'Huntersoft (...)' on your desktop, just remove it afterwards...)

Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply mate,
The issues were basically the comp would just hang and there was no way of getting it to work again unless I powered down, even then it sometimes thought about it.

The USB are to the mobo, I have only replaced the PSU like for like with the connectors, so yes I would say they are OK. And one out the four is fine.

I ran that utility and it came as below

PCI Device [Unknown]
Chip: ATI Technologies
Detail
Chip Vender
ATI Technologies
Device
PCI Device
OEM Vender
ATI Technologies
PnpID
VEN_1002&DEV_AA18&SUBSYS_AA181002&REV_00
OEM Device from ATI Technologies

My GPU is working fine, its a 3870

Looks like HDMI audio device integrated on on your graphics card to me. Did you turn off onboard audio in the BIOS? You might try re-installing from the driver cd that came with the graphics card.

Me thinks Max's got it right:
This is what I found googling the VEN_1002&DEV_AA18&SUBSYS_AA181002&REV_00 string:

click link (http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/664090-solved-uknown-pci-vendor-id.html)

Looks like it's the audio device integrated into that 3870...
(Found multiple references to it, also on other later ATI cards)

(Hey, why am I replying here? Max has beaten me to it... Oh well, +1 for postcount... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif)

Gents,
I need to publicly hang my head in shame.
Would seem that being the rather heavy handed fool I am, I broke off some diode or other when installing the new PSU.

Took the comp to shop this morning who soldered the diode back on and all is well.

I appreciate all your help, still working on the strange PCI whatsit.

Head up m8, you're not the first person to have this happen and I'm sure you won't be the last.

Presumably the soldering job has restored your USB functions?

Thankfull yes, USB all working. Also sorted the PCI, as helpfully mentioned it is something to do with the 3870. Installed drivers off the CD and 'problem' sorted.

Once again, thanks for everyone who helped.

Noticed that I had to reset my soundcard back to default as the 3870 had jumped in. Why does my graphics card have on board sound? Can I actually make use of it?

You should be able to...
Wether it's a good idea will depend if it's a better one that the one you already got...

Good point

"Wether it's a good idea will depend if it's a better one that the one you already got..."

Running a creative Xfi with 5.1 speakers so will stick with it for time being.

The main purpose of the onboard sound is for the HDMI, so you can run video and sound to an hd tv or other HDMI monitor.

Ahh, I see, finally the penny it falleth!

Just noted I've been on these boards for a good few years, do I qualify for the lowest post count???

Nope. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
Take a look at this reply by UK_Apollo in the Attention 8800 owners thread (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/63110913/m/1711062135?r=4001047426#4001047426)

Gents,
Sorry for dragging this thread back up! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

As mentioned my computer was continually freezing,ie, screeen froze, HD light stopped on and I could do nothing. Thought it was a power issue hence new PSU. Problem still there. Then thought perhaps a HD issue, so new HD with fresh install of XP.

Still same damn issues, freezes, HD light stops on. CAnnot CTRL/ALT/DELETE to access task manager as all I can do is turn off/on. I am thinking of http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/touche.gif

A new problem I think connected (but I am an idiot) is that I keep getting an active desk top eror message. I am trawling the net trying to find cause of this. In the meantime, whilst I understand it could be a host of things, any suggestions?

might be worth looking in control panel>administrative tools>event viewer and look at both system and application records.
doubleclick on events that occur at freezes and click microsoft link in window that pops up. should at least give you something to go on

Either memory, or motherboard.

Maybe that loosened/soldered diode?

You can test the memory, using Memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com) (there's a free downloadable there too)

What's that Active Desktop error message like?

Cheers, have downloaded the Memtest and will run that in the morning (let it run whilst doing school run). Am I correct in thinking that the longer its left to run uninterrupted the better?

The error message tells me that I should try and restore active desktop, then gives me an option to do so (whilst the actual screen goes an odd grey colour and I lose the desk top image), I click on the OK button and then get another error message about Internet Explorer and then three various options of how to turn on.turn off active desk top, none of which make a blind bit of difference. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Not sure if it is the diode as I was having the problem before I changed the PSU, I am now on my third HD, running a SATA connector.

Yes.

Prime suspect is memory... motherboard is next...

re active desktop- does this help?
http://angrys0ul.com/blog/2007/03/30/restore-active-desktop-not-working/

might be a work around before disabling it, then you can work on the freeze

Thankyou, nice find, I have done as instructed so lets see?
