If you want vehicles check out Battlefeild 2, great game in that aspect. But please this topic has been debated down to the bone and I'm pretty sure we are all sick of hearing about it. Vehicles belong no where near Ghost Recon. They are Green Berets not pilots or drivers.

Vehicles are great...in Battlefield 2. But part of the appeal Ghost Recon is being able to have great infantry firefights.

Being able to have vehicles as a variant...sounds fine to me. The maps may be large enough this time to support the use of vehicles, instead of the usual 300m across. I certainly wouldn't want to travel the entire city on foot.

Frankly, at this point GR has changed so much, I'm not sure adding vehicles would even be an issue. Adding vehicles to OGR would have absolutely KILLED the game, but in this next GR I'm starting to think that it may not matter.
I'm still going to hang around until the launch, just to see what kind of feedback this next GR gets. I know who to trust here, so I will wait for them to post.
Frankly for everyone who misses OGR, too bad, as I think this game has changed too much to go back to its roots. For OGR fans, I think we really need to find a new game, as this next GR does not seem to be anything like OGR.

Right behind you on that one jchung.....and seeing as how Americas Army got pushed back till October leaves us with a lot of nothing in the way of realistic tactical shooters.

neither of which I want to see in GR3 (even if it is in Mexico City).

If there are vehicles they need to be scripted. In OGR for PC it was planned to be included that you could ride in on a helicopter and shoot from it while you landed. Actually part of the code was still in the game and modders made playable maps where you did ride in on helicopters. It was fun.
Vehicles that you can drive would be bad though. These aren't super soldiers. These are elite infantry. They don't drive tanks or attack in jeeps with turrets. At the most you get a hummer with a 50 cal., but that's not used for combat, just transportation mostly.

Ben, you forgot the raft! Only 3 kinds of vehicles, 1 for each place they belong, fully pilotable and shootfromable. 1. Humvee with .50 cal 2. Raft with M249 type gun on the front 3. Black Hawk Helicopter.
I realize the helicopter may take a lot of coding, but if my idea of ALL of mexico city being playable at a time, with 100+ players, u could easily fit them into the game.

Twelve or less men against an entire army, amateur or not...and they're not going to have a great deal of firepower to use? That stupid looking suit isn't going to be so powerful as to outweigh the need for an M2 or Mk19 or whatever future replacements may be. A few guys with SCARs probably won't last very long. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
Of course, it'd be silly to have all multiplayer fights turn into whoever can get to the vehicle first but a variant where each team has one would be fun.

Let's clarify this a bit. While vehicles were in GR, they were not player controllable and that is what is needed to be kept out of GR. Yes, I know a certain 5th SFG operator's team who "stole" a helo and they used it to get somewhere, it is not a general form of instertion for them from my understanding. They use indigenous trucks when needing to get around. While this is good for large areas, GR's small map sizes (400x400 meters for the original), they are not needed. A person could walk a click in about 7 minutes time. No need to drive that short of a distance, the gameplay for both SP and MP would then change.
Tchaikovsky.
07-09-2005, 06:58 AM
But what if the maps are much larger than they are now? More like the size of San Andreas Would you change your opinion towards them than?
Cause I just think people are stuck in there heads with the GR1/2 type of maps and gameplay and automatically asume vehicles would never fit in a GR game.
As can be read in this thread: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/205105043/m/8631072213/p/1 I'm for vehicles but absolutely not even in the slightest way to create a Halo type of game.
What I basically say in that other thread is that I would like to bring out there unique skill that special forces have more and create it so you have a better feeling of being one of them instead of the same old 8 vs 8, 10 vs 10 MP games, but for example 25 OPFOR vs 8 Ghosts type of games.
Where the OPFOR could use jeeps/cars to hunt down the ghosts and need to have it from there majority and mobility, ghosts need to have it from things like superior firepower; anti vehicle weapons, maybe better zoom on there rifles, and most importantly there stealthyness.
I simply want to have a unique game that is more realistic and more tactical than the stuff you have now. Cause these days every game that has an MP5 or an M16 in it is labeled as "tactical shooter". While most if not all of them basically have the same bloody gameplay like games as Halo, Unreal, RB6 3...(the list goes on and on) while the only thing that's diverent about them is there setting and the way there guns and bombs look like, cause in one game you may kill someone with a bullet (or 5 magazines for some games) and in the other one you use an X-666hyperplasmabeam but in the end it's still the same death match/last man standing/team slayer/just kill everyone game.
Afcourse it's a little bit diverent than that but if you think about it, it's basically all the same.
Also I think alot of the Brits already may know the BBC serie called SAS: Survival Secrets (http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=search&searchtype=r2title&pa=srmr&searchstring=sas+survival) Which is a serie with real ex SAS members where they recreate missions and explain which tools they use and how they approach it in order to succesfully succeed in there missions. I can highly recommend everyone of you and especially dev's to watch that serie and see it as a step by step manual for GR4 or wathever new game cause it just screems out "make me into a game".
And after you watched it im convinced everyone of you suddenly screems for boats and other vehicles in the next GR like im doing now. haha http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I still wouldn't change my mind if the maps were larger. It takes away from the original ghost recon. I think that juss sneakin and walkin 2 where eva u wanna go is the best way. It's ghost recon, that means that ure not supposed to be heard or seen. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif
Tchaikovsky.
07-09-2005, 08:48 AM
I still want a Recon game like every body else unlike in GR2 where the "recon" in Ghost Recon din't seem to be around in miles.
As a matter of fact I would plead for even more or REAL recon in later GR versions without the standard shoot what moves gameplay that we now have, but actually let the ghosts silently go to a position behind enemy lines and get intel about enemy troops, laze multiple targets...etc all done without being detected.
About vehicles in the game, see it more of a combination where enemies use them primarely for hunting you down and as weapon. And the ghosts would use them more as a form of insertion (like dessert buggies and small boats with just a turret) to make the game more complete unlike the "teleportation" in the middle of nowhere you now have. Cause that's what the cool thing about games is: You can do things. Unlike in a movie so why not plan our insertions ourselfs?
More realism no Haloism. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Haloism? Is that a new religion? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
Seriously, I wouldn't mind the idea of an actual drop by a helicopter on a remote part of a map, or a silent landing on a nearby treelined shore, that would be cool. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
The "beam me up Scotty" insertions and extractions were kind of lame, so in that respect I would not mind adding vehicles, and maybe even having to clear an LZ? Perhaps having to make a clean break from an island on a boat without getting shot?

I vote to keep vehicles out of the game. No matter what, they will increase the speed of games and thats the last thing that is needed for this gameplay.
Tchaikovsky.

Lol@Jchung but im afraid it is looking at the games of these days.
But seriously personally I think Halo is the only game I ever played that had some nice insertions and extractions which GR never had. And those guys and girls at Bungie atleast do there best to make a unique game. I and alot of us I guess can't stand the MP of Halo but it's more a matter of taste cause the game is properly made and worked out good.
@EasyCo If they make it properly it wouldn't bring down the gameplay we both love in a bad way. Vehicles are real they are necessary in real operations. Soldiers don't walk a whole country to reach there target, or swim a sea to reach the land.
If made properly it would fill in 2 gaps you now have which are: insertion and extraction. What's in the middle wouldn't be affected which is the mission. Without the 2 the game is incomplete imo.
And about multi player if made with opfor (with vehicles) vs ghosts (without) like I mentioned earlier. You would only bring up the skills more that SF have and being silent would be a must, cause just running around will get the attention of a majority of armed men with vehicles (bad idea).

IT added helo and boat insertions to GR even if it were cutscene insertions. That added to the game even if we couldn't shoot back (not that it was needed). While I do agree that vehicle insertions add to the game, adding vehicles to ride around it and play from or with are not what is needed or wanted by many players. Yes SF troops take vehiles to AOs, but do take to foot. Depending on where they are at dictates what they use. Add them for insertions and exfiltrations, but not for player use.

WK after reading your reply I was kind of surprised cause I couldn't remember anything about those cut scenes in the XB version of IT but you're right: http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpagesscreens/914450.asp?screenid=2 http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpagesscreens/914450.asp?pagenum=3 I think they cut it out for us. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
As for multi player I agree as well that the ghosts shouldn't own vehicles at all only the opfor (explained above) should start with them. So it becomes sort of a game like Splinter Cell, where the ghosts are the spies and the opfor are the mercenaries only in GR style and without the high tech stuff. But if made like that they should be able to carjack it but the game must be made so it isn't much of a use or to difficult.

Gun emplacements maybe but vehicles wouldn't fit ghost recon.

I also am not in favor of riding around in vehicles, but a cool idea for a mission would be to have your entry or extraction FUBAR, where you are thrown into action right away and you you have to assist the pilots/drivers out of the situation.
Think about this for a mission. You have just completed another mission, picked up by extraction and it is shot down. Now the new mission starts with you either having to shoot your way out with limited ammo (as you have used it on a previous mission) or sneak your way to a new extraction, with the pilots.
I don't know, maybe that gets to linear like the GR2 missions, it could be tweaked up a bit. Would kind of be like combining Fuel Depot with Pilot Down. Think about if your extraction on Pagoda or Train Yard were shot down with you in it in a cutscene and the mission continued. Ehh... Now I'm rambling.

Cons72 - I like your new mission ideas above with the cut-scene video in between missions.
I'd take it a little further extreme in that your Primary weapon is thrown clear of the wreakage (unfindable) and you and your AI team (or everybody in Multiplayer Mission or Firefight) starts with Pistols Only and you have to take out an eight man patrol sent to initially check out the wreakage, but during the pistol fight they've radiod for reinforcements! You need to kill the whole enemy squad, take their rifles and set-up for the incoming reinforcements.
I've had online Multiplayer missions with Pistols Only and you have to fight the enemy for their rifles. It'd be cool as a mission.

Considering that most vehicle fans are probably the same type of "GR fan" that exploits glitches and chases stats, we can all assume that most of the votes for vehicles have been made by the same 5 or 6 people with multiple accounts http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

the only vehicles i would want to see in gr are scary realistic ones.... better then driving sims.(hummers, random cars, deuce 1/2 ... nothing else and i want bullet fire to be realistic too. Engine blocks going, windows shattering obscuring view, tires possibly going flat from driving to fast on bumpy roads. Suspensions breaking....
oh and very limited use, RPG guys should do a good job of finding ya and blowing ya up
no game has ever done it. "ofp was kind of close"
but for GR3 since its so late in dev... no

Don't come up with untrue bogus if you don't share the same opinion as others, if you think diverently about things discuss it or simply accept it. But don't act when someone doesn't share the same thought as you he/she must be of a lower kind.
I and other people that I have spoken to like the idea of having vehicles and as said many times NOT to create a vehicle for all Battlefield/Halo type of game.

I'm a BIG OPPONENT of having vehicles in GR, however there is one element of realism that vehicles can add.
Think about how you currently run OGR/GRIT. I don't like the way the game just ends when you reach the extraction zone.
I like to run mostly silenced weapons and I'm not necessarily looking to kill everyone all of the time, so there have been a number of times when I was trying to sneak off to the extraction zone when enemy would pursue me. Many games have ended for me with reaching the extraction zone as enemy gunfire was wizzing over my head.
This is were I have to agree with Tchaikovsky that just going to a cut scene takes away from the realism. What happened to the enemy? Did they just disappear? It would be a good feature to add a "live" extraction. You would have to watch out for RPGs etc...
I'm really not that concerned about the insertion aspect, although if they added it would be a nice touch, but the extractions would add a lot to the realism IMO.

Yeah, the extraction idea is not bad, but will it happen? Remember this is the same developer who strips away all the options like everyhing from choosing and loading out the squad, to audio level settings, because they think all we want is to JUMP INTO THE ACTION. They think we don't want to be "bothered" with anything but shooting shooting shooting. So maybe they think we just want to get right to the next mission, and not be "bothered" with extractions and such.
In any case, this would be a decent implementation of vehicles, UNLIKE drivable vehicles in missions.

It appears, based on screenshots, that you will (at least occasionally) be inserted by blackhawk, and since there is a crosshair, you will have the ability to shoot out tangos on your way in.
Rumor has it that exfils will be the same way...
Sounds like what you're looking for...

I agree. People are trying too hard to cram too much into one game, then what you end up with is 1.a different game than what you had (not an improved one, a DIFFERENT one), 2.a game that is NOT an original, one of a kind experience, but a melting pot with bits of features from all the "action" games these new GR players usually play.
That brings me to my last point: these requests for driveable vehicles, 3rd person view, and all this other **** come from the same bunch. Most of these people don't even LIKE ghost recon, they are the new crowd Ubi attracted with GR:2. What worries me is that these are the people Ubi will listen to instead of actual GR fans.
And the irony of all ironies is that these people tell GR fans "if you don't like the changes play something else". (WTF ??!!!!) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Everyone has the right of there own opinion I'm not trying to interfere with yours at all make no mistake about that. But I think (I could be wrong afcourse) alot of the folks that are against vehicles aren't actually against them but are against and are afraid that this game will become the next Halo if drivable vehicles would be in.
Most games with drivable vehicles are arcade and totally unrealistic; Battlefield/Star Wars Battlefront/Halo/Pariah/Unreal/Grand Theft Auto/Mech Assault, to name a few.
So be honest if you hear the word "vehicle" in the same sentence as "Ghost Recon" do you immediately see a short movie in your mind of Cpt. Mitchell and the other ghosts bunny hop into there F-16's and tanks, kamikaziing right onto the enemy? Afcourse this should never ever be possible in a GR game.
But my theory is that because most games with drivable vehicles are like that almost everyone associates vehicles with arcady run & gun gameplay, cause that's probably the only picture they've seen of it.
Although I said it before but I've got the feeling not everyone is prepared to read the entire topic http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif so I will say it again.
I see vehicles being used in GR in the following ways:
Campaign: Using small boats and 4 wheeled vehicles as an insertion and extraction tool.
Multiplayer: In a new gameplay way where you have a group of OPFOR with vehicles (Only some Jeeps with turrets would do the trick) that have to hunt down a small group of Ghosts without vehicles. Where the OPFOR is in majority and the Ghosts in minority and the main focus would lay on stealth and tactics to stay out of hands of the OPFOR. (For further details read back my earlier posts in this topic).
Again I'm not saying you have to agree with me on this but please don't come up with "People who like them are just..." kind of nonsense.

I stand by my comments, but I do not think you (Tchaikovsky) are the kind of player I was refering to. It's my fault for the misunderstanding, since my post really doesn't belong in this particular "vehicles" thread. I think your ideas sound pretty good.
I'm only concerned with maintaining the GR gameplay (or returning to it).

And, from what I've seen so far, it appears that's all they've done with vehicles. You don't fly the blackhawk in, you ride in it. All you can do is shoot from the bay door... during the insertion and (possibly) during the extraction.

I'll tell you who likes the big-gun minigame idea and who doesn't. Most people who have bought every GR to date probably don't like it. And those who do like it probably also think the Battle level on GR2 "rocks", lol.
